  • The StratoLauncher® IV Deluxe Kit launches rockets with StratoFins, homemade fins, Fluorescent Tube Cover (FTC) rockets, gliders, and water rocket race cars (commercial or homemade) due to the nozzle it works with almost anything. Also, the StratoLauncher® IV Deluxe can be upgraded to an Ultimate enabling the use of a tank sprayer to fuel the rocket while on the launchpad. Once upgraded it can be connected together creating a multi-launcher system that uses a single water and single air source for convenience and efficiency for classes and a large group of participants such as STEM events. I apologize for the delayed response to your question. Over the years I have used various key chain type cameras that are very small, but the best one available now is the Mobius Mini version 2. You can get a 5% discount on their website to bring it close to $75.00 and shipping may be free. You may find this on Amazon or elsewhere, but I would not recommend buying it anywhere else than their website. There are some knock off versions out there that are not near as good.

A student of mine considers purchasing the launcher for a school experiment. But he needs to now whether he can use different quantities of water with it (for example 1 l or even more)

The biggest problem with adding 1 liter or more of water regardless of the type of water rocket is the weight of the water itself. It actually reduces the altitude achieved, because it takes more energy to overcome that excess weight of the water. Water rockets are meant to be lightweight enabling them to fly high and keeping the amount of water to a minimum is an easy way to achieve that. All 3 models of our StratoLauncher IV (Standard, Deluxe, & Ultimate) can be used with air only or with various amounts of water up to a point. One cup of water is optimal for a 2 liter bottle, but more water can be used in an FTC (Fluorescent Tube Cover) rocket. In an FTC rocket the water column is narrow and works well with a nozzle; however, in a 2 liter bottle the excess water swirls around inside before exiting and in the process throws the rocket out of balance and it veers off. If one uses a rail system (we have one, but I am in the process of creating a video about it before we begin selling it), then you can add up to about 3.25 cups of water, which is about 2/5ths full on a 2 liter bottle. Even with full bore rockets not using a nozzle, you only want to add up to 1/3 full at the most for a 2 liter bottle. The air (energy) is more important than the water. Any of our StratoLauncher IV models will launch a 2 liter bottle over 200 ft. with air only. Yes, the water will add an additional 100 - 150 ft. on top of that 200 ft. We have the parts for the rail system, if your student wants to use more than a cup of water. Contact us on our website and I can provide the details, which are pretty simple, although having a video to watch would make it easier, which is what I am working on.

@@StratoFins Great, thank you for your detailed reply. My student will order the launcher and we can always investigate the effect of the air pressure on the speed and on the maximum height reached by the rocket.
Still if we can fill the bottle with more water we will try that too to see what happens in this case.
If the measurements are repeatable then even if the altitude is reduced its an equally good topic of investigation! (try to see why and how this happens)

Thank you for taking the time to communicate your experience with our product, but if you need help, it is best to contact our support team at support@stratofins.com. We apologize for any issues you may have had with our StratoLauncher IV Deluxe. Typically, those who experience poor performance from it are using too much water (more than 1 cup) and/or are NOT using a weighted fall away nose cone as prescribed. Nozzle type rockets are very efficient and do not require much water. In fact, they can be used very effectively with air only up to about 200 ft in altitude. Using the proper amount of water does add an additional 50 - 150 ft. depending on PSI used. Below are 2 videos that will be very helpful to you.
