Love all these horses! God made my favorite Seretariat, i was my greatest pleasure to see him run. Never will there be another like him. RIP Big Red!! You are missed!!
I have seen 2 Triple Crowns in person in my lifetime. What an honor. I saw Affirmed's 3 wins in '78, and of course Secretariat's in '73. The Belmont is an indelible memory for me and I still weep like I'm watching a Shirley Temple movie every time I see a replay of that incredible '73 Belmont.
Recency bias, and the state of racing at the time really clouds this argument. Man 'O War never raced the TC, but he destroyed Sir Barton. Considering the steel shoes, slower tracks, and racing multiple times a week, imo, the mighty Man 'O War stands alone. Though doubtless Secretariat, the other "Big Red" was an amazing race horse. Seattle Slew also gets slept on, as does Count Fleet and Whirlaway.
Thought Barbaro had the makings of a horse for the ages, but tragedy robbed us all. Just like Ruffian, one of the greatest females ever. But all lead back to the biggest hearted, most talented ever. Secretariat 🐴 thank you a lot 👍
I wish he'd lived to see American Pharoh end the Triple Crown drought. Like I'd written on Twitter that day, "Today, the Sport of Kings belongs to a Pharoh."
Count Fleet was every bit as dominant in his 3rd yr as was Secretariat. He was the 6th Triple Crown winner, taking the Derby by 3, Preakness by 8 and Belmont by 25 lengths. In between the Preakness & Belmont, he also won the Withers Stakes by 5 lengths.
And some of us remember that Citation was basically invincible, and easily dominating four-year olds, as a young three year old BEFORE the Derby, and didn't even race at all at four in 1949 due to injury/illness. When he came back in 1950, he wasn't at the condition he had been in before, and was only back to cross the million mark in earnings.
This excellent 1988 documentary chronicles every triple crown race, for each winner, from Sir Barton (1919: the first) to Affirmed (1978). What makes it such an important historical production is the contemporaneous footage of Secretariat and Seattle Slew: the horses are standing near narrator Jim McKay as he begins their respective segments! The great horse Alydar also appears with McKay when he begins the segment that focuses on triple crown winner Affirmed, which is a touching and beautiful moment given the terrible and tragic circumstances involving Alydar that occurred two years later. Other amazing horses who were not triple crown winners (e.g., Seabiscuit) also appear in this documentary. This video is well worth watching for all horse racing fans and historians.
The Triple Crown is the most awesome of all sporting championships. I know nothing about the world series, but some team will win it. I don't even like football, but some team will win the superbowl. The Triple Crown is so magnificent that only these horses, plus American Pharoah and Justify, have done it. Racing is the greatest sport in the world! Yeah, I know I spelled "Pharoah" correctly and it should be spelled incorrectly. But I don't remember the exact mistake. I just remember the first Triple Crown in 37 years.
I owned the videotape and I watched it every spring annually. Thank you for posting this video. Alydar was my favorite horse. He deserved a better fate both in 1978 and 1990. It was so poignant when they showed you these champions final resting place . Plus the standing starts, the brief history of each winner post triple crown. It’s the perfect documentary
Only ONE horse broke AND holds ALL 3 Triple Crown records after how many hundreds of horses that have run it....Secretariat is the greatest athlete in history. He will never be duplicated. We will never see this supernatural miracle again. Secretariat will only happen once on Earth. No human will ever match his greatness. He truly was God's gift to man.
He got the record for the Preakness 39 years AFTER the race, supposedly the official time was two seconds out. If that was correct, then they should check the times for every winner of every Triple Crown race where there is a full film just to be sure..
Megan Mendez At least you're to the point:-) MOW was my favorite until Secretariat. To me, Secretariat was the miracle on Earth. The only being that had supernatural ability, confidence, intelligence and physical perfection. There was nothing about him that can be duplicated.
Steve Veasey Probably the best discussion I've seen of the technical issues involved in the change of Secretariat's official Preakness time has been Victor Mather's June 21, 2012 column for The New York Times, "It’s Secretariat, Faster Today Than in 1973." Your suggestion would not work for races recorded on film in pre-videotape days. Videotape was relatively new in '73. Its timing is perfectly uniform at 29.97 frames per second. The suggestion is additionally unnecessary in any race in which hand-held and electronic timers are in close agreement and backing each other up. But if an important record were in question again, and there was such a glaring discrepancy between the electronic timer and various human clockers, I dare say the authorities would again turn to videotape analysis-- and in a much more timely (truly, no pun intended) manner, now that the unvarying nature of videotape is understand by racing authorities. It was known from immediately after the '73 Preakness something was screwed up, because the two Racing Form clockers had Secretariat *so* much faster (1:53 2/5) than the electronic timer (1:55). CBS Sports videotape a few days later showed Sec going faster than Canonero II. The stewards' decision to go with Pimlico's official and very poorly positioned hand-held clocker (1:54 2/5) was a compromise allowed by the rules of the time. I believe the Racing Form never did accept the 1:54 2/5, either using their own faster time, or putting an asterisk by the official time. The change by the MD Racing Commission was a matter of their rules catching up to modern technology.
marysueeasteregg Thanks for that information, I am actually just watching a documentary about Citation...ran 20 times as a 3 year old, winning 19. That is obviously remarkable but again I wonder what the quality of the competition was like? I know 'You can only beat what they put up against you' but in horse racing if you get two mediocre crops of yearlings in a row it has a knock on effect on the quality of competition for five or six years,,,
Sir Barton is my favorite. I love the part about him hating all humans except his groom and smile at hearing that he wasn't supposed to win the derby but did anyways.
Sir Barton is so underrated. He was a good racehorse and his career is actually very impressive. People often forget that he ran and beat many of the greatest horses in the country at the time and set multiple speed records while carrying heavy weights. Sir Barton was also in alot of pain, his hooves were so thin that he often threw shoes during races. Almost every race he threw at least one shoe, some races including the one with Man o War he threw all 4 shoes.
For an 'old' documentary from the 80's, this was real quality from start to finish.. and it was beautiful to see Alydar aswel, just 2 years before his death... Lets hope Chromie becomes the 12th jewel in the crown!!
After all the hype, it really was sad.. but I think he's a machine, just not at 1m4f.. although he can win races there, when fresh.. but I seriously blame the jockey for the majority of it.. he should have held his position, so at least he can say he stuck to what's always worked for him in the past..
I’ve been open minded about each Triple Crown winner, and I don’t see how anyone could argue that anyone of these horses are comparable to Secretariat! He beat every record made and still hasn’t had his record at Belmont approached, let alone beaten!
I don’t know if you guys have seen it but they have surface evidence from secretariat’s autopsy that shows that he’s heart was two and a half times bigger than the normal size given him a considerable advantage over the other competitors. Citation's career is comparable to Secretariat's. Citations 2 and 3 year old seasons were without a doubt the greatest in American history, if not world history. In the span of that time he won 27 of 29 starts, and although his winning streak is surpassed it remains arguably the greatest of all time. During that time he won at every distance, at 10 different tracks, in 7 different states, traveling by dusty trucks and sweltering trains. We won almost all of his races held back by 66 lengths, set 4 track records, 1 world record, swept the triple crown by 17 lengths, beat the best stayers and sprinters in the country, beat 4 year olds before he even ran in the triple crown. He often raced days after winning a different race. His later seasons often tarnish his nearly perfect record. He was injured from running so much that he was off for a year. His owners were greedy and wanted him to be the first equine millionaire even though everyone knew he wasn't in a condition to race.
What a great year 1978 was for thoroughbred racing in America, with the Affirmed - Alydar rivalry in the Triple Crown and then with Affirmed losing twice to '77 Triple Crown champ Seattle Slew. Saw most of those races on TV back then; if I'd thought it would take this long - and counting - for another 3-ple crown champ, I wish I could have seen the '78 Belmont in person.
@@auletjohnast03638 1973 was a complete blowout of the field by Big Red (Secretariat), in 1978 Alydar finished 2nd to Affirmed in all 3 races but getting closer each time. The Belmont is usually not a close race but after the 1st turn Affirmed wasn't able to get more than 1/2 length ahead of Alydar who stayed right with with up to the end losing by only a head. ua-cam.com/video/ua4Rg7wjuyc/v-deo.html
Thanks for posting. For me the greatest horse will always be Secretariat, the prettiest, too! Seattle Slew and Affirmed also impressed me in how they won. The early horses that impressed me were Count Fleet and Whirlaway (wins my vote for best looking tail, long & flowing!) Thoroughly enjoyed watching.

Your dad was correct!! Seabiscuit was never bred to a good racing mare so he had no great offspring! His owner loved him and never sought out mares for him!! Man O War produced many great progeny during his breeding days! His line produced many great race horses. Secretariat was one of a kind and therefore there will never be another!! His heart was twice the size of other race horses which was found when he died. I rode a granddaughter of Seabiscuit at a riding stable when I was a very young girl!
Did you happen to see the “Virtual” Kentucky Derby in May 2020, done because the pandemic postponed the actual race until that September? All 13 TC winners ran, with Secretariat finishing 1st (no surprise). I can’t remember who Placed & Showed… must re-watch that fun video! It was such a clever idea.
Count fleet won by 25 in 1943.. could it ever be beaten? Exactly 30 years later, that question was answered by secretariat who won by 31.. now is 31 ever going to be beaten? No! Maybe yes if robot horses would be allowed to race the triple crown. otherwise, secretariat's belmont run in 73' will never be broken
I don’t know exactly how I do it but I’ve picked the last two triple crown winners and 10 Kentucky derby winners. I picked Big Brown but he got hurt. I guess Man O War was special but I believe Secretariat is the best horse of all time.
eac 123 Well I have my reservations about making a lot of money using the gifts I have, though I did win some on the Always Dreaming. But here’s what strange and it was so incredible. Country House? I had just bought a house in the country and when my sons pick was scratched it went to 50 to 1 Country House and as the lord is my witness I just almost picked him. lol now that would have been crazy and I had his name in my mouth but just didn’t do it. lol
@@bhupeshshelake At the time of Alydar's death, he was at Calumet Farm for breeding purposes. Calumet Farms was in a great deal of financial distress at the time. It was suspected that the President of Calumet at the time (I think his name may have been Lundy), was behind Alydar's death. Alydar was heavily insured, and it is suspected that he was killed in an attempt to claim the insurance payout, and bail Calumet out of the financial hole that it was in.
Until about 6 months ago I lived just around the corner from Churchill Downs. Many interesting local relics still exist in one form or another if you know where to to look...the"Whirlaway Inn" on 4th St., and the home on Central and 3rd of Roscoe "The Goose", jockey who rode Donerail, a 91-1 logshot to win the Derby in 1913 . This story is well-known but it turns out that Roscoe's older brother Carl rode a filly named Cream to victory in the Oaks, too. It seems that his mother and brother lived at the corner house as well. Kurtsinger rode the Admiral like they'd been created as brothers for one another. So did Red "Cougar" Pollard, Seabiscuit's jock...although he was in traction, barely able to move, at the time of the famous match race race. His dear friend and excellent jockey George Woolf was able to fill in, and Pollard gave him the key to breaking War Admiral's iron heart. Let both horses run eye-to-eye for a bit---a few seconds, a quarter of a minute---and after a while WA would *definitely* crack and fall back. The 'Biscuit was naughty and relished taking the spice out of all owner Charles Howard's horses, which was becoming a problem! However, he hardly needed instruction as it was child's play to run up to The Big Horse and pop out his micky. Dr. Riddle was heartbroken as he led his Mighty Atom off the track. But had he known, War Admiral would send us horses from the female line: Swaps and Seattle Slew (TCW '77). Affirmed and Alysheba both had WA in their lines, which for race lovers is an interesting bit of trivia. WA shows up in American Pharoah's pedigree 15 times.
bubblinbrownsugar616 Can you imagine how modern announcers, especially the 'more hysterical ones', would call that backstretch run? From where he started to where he ended up completely burying the field...a lot of people have never learned about the sheer POWER of crazy "Mr. Longtail". I've always felt that he and Count Fleet...who "won the Withers just to stay sharp"...are underrated as among the most amazing horses ever to watch.
Incidentally, there's something a lot of people don't remember about the War Admiral and Seabiscuit race/rivalry. For all the talk of Seabiscuit being "the common man's horse", the facts of the pedigree lay out a different reality: War Admiral was his step-uncle. And if War Admiral was his step-uncle, that means that his grandsire was...you know who. Seabiscuit's "interests", owner and trainer, were more common men, yes, and they certainly weren't Eastern Establishment. But make no mistake: Seabiscuit's blood was just as royal as The Admiral's, and they both did their immortal family proud in different ways.
For the early horses, like you I was impressed with Count Fleet, too! The other horse that impressed me was Whirlaway - best looking tail I've ever seen on a horse, long and flowing!
There was a dramatic increase in the number of foals born after 1950. That is why the Triple Crown winners dried up after 1948 and Citation. Since then, one of the most difficult things to do in sports has been to win the Triple Crown. There is simply too much competition.
How many of you remember the filly Landaluce. She would of won the triple crown in my opinion. Greatest horse i ever watched run in person. And i have seen some greats.
@@bacatherineczekaj6456 are you referring to the fact that during his Belmont Stakes, Secretariat ran 1.25 miles in 1:59 flat - which he did.? That bested his fantastic Kentucky Derby finish time of 1:59 and 2/5.
@JoeReynolds-iw1sn 1 other horse has won the Derby in under 2 minutes: Monarchos, in 2001. Although Sham was runner-up to Big Red in the Derby, he also ran it in under 2 mins.
E.Arcaro rode both and he said CITATION was better...I have the original. win picture winning the Hollywood Gold Cup in1951..calumet contract rider...Steve Brooks (up)
The greatest horse of all times is Big Red. Nick name of Man o War and Secretariat. Man o War: was a better stud, 28 ft stride of 110 degrees, 1/2 hand taller. 21 races with 20 wins, a majestic horse just look at the conformance visible in his statue in Lexington. 2017 was his 100 year anaversary. I love Secretariat ❤️ but see a greatness in Man o War. Too bad he didnt run in all 3 races of the triple crown he would be on this documentary.
California chrome didn’t even win the triple crown. He holds no records. The best horse not to win the triple crown is spectacular bid. He holds the world record for mile and a quarter 1:574/5. Chrome couldn’t touch that.
I love the horses names!!! I got drunk last night and just spent the whole night reading about old winning Kentucky Derby horses names, ya know like Money Moves or MidNight Bourbon
Sorry to tell you that as the creator and producer of this show it won't be updated. Once the Triple Crown moved to NBC and Jim passed away it was obviously impossible
We won't get to 13 this year. I thought perhaps Nyquist might be versatile enough to do it, but the Preakness went all wrong. You have to be pretty incredible to win the Triple Crown. You probably can't be at your best three times in five weeks so you need something truly special to pull off this feat. Some great horses could not do it.
Notice that Alydar is pointed out as would-have-been Triple Crown winner if he was not there at same time as Affirmed. There was 10-year gap already after Affirmed's Triple Crown, and it wasn't won again until June of this year.
Now after California Chromes sad loss we can hope for Cozmic One and Jess's Dream in 2015. Both are sired by Preakness Stakes Winners (Cozmic One by Bernardini, Jess's Dream by Rachel Alexandra and Curlin)
I've read that Whirlaway's trainers, the Joneses, and his rider, Arcaro, did not think of Whirlaway as in the same class as Man o' War or Citation. I gather that they regarded him as useful, but not great. Given his brilliant performances in the classic races, I find this point of view hard to understand.
tubeyhamster Don't know how familiar you are with Whirlaway's overall record, but -- HIs career record was 60:32-15-9, a much less impressive winning percentage than Man o'War's one loss in 21 starts, or Citation's 2 losses in 29 starts before he was injured sometime between the end of his 3-yr-old year and what would have been his 4-yr-old campaign. (I am discounting here Citation's admittedly much poorer record at 6 and 7, when he came back to the track after sitting out his 4-yr-old year.) But at 2, at 3 and at 4, Whirlaway was winning only 45 to 65 percent of his starts each year. He was heavily campaigned all 3 of those years, with 58 starts. Could his poorer record have due to overracing rather than less talent? Maybe. But there is also the issue he was an exceptionally difficult horse to ride, with a habit of heading so far to the outside rail that the photo finish camera sometimes had difficulty picking him up. Whirlaway was rated 26th of 20th C. American racers by a 1999 Blood-Horse panel. When you think about the tens (or hundreds?) of thousands of horses who would have run in those hundred years, that's actually a very high ranking. But the consensus opinion seems to be that he was a terrific but erratic runner. I'm not suggesting he was an underserving TC winner, just that I can easily see why he's not ranked as high as some other horses, Triple Crown winners or not. The TC races are only one part of a horse's career.
Salute to the first 11 horses and now also American Pharaoh and Justify.

Bannor Haruchai, I wish I could've seen the 1973 Belmont in person.

Secretariat is the best horse ever
This is an awesome documentary!
Back in the day ,these old races ,were the super bowls . Base ball too.
L Broderick, Whirlaway was nicknamed "Mr. Longtail."
whats wrong here did u ever stand next to my Barbaro. the handsome greatest horse ever. thats enough, im going to cry.
Barbaro was a beautiful horse also. It is a shame what happened to him.
But Sir Barton is a phenomenon.

Thank you so mucho for the documentary i love it so much
Secretariat would always be the greatest story ever actually performed cerec Crown winner of the Belmont Stakes that's my horse
SECRETARIAT WAS GOD'S HORSE AND THE GREATEST RACE HORSE EVER!
Barbaro
@@heleneallen9607 , How can you compare barbaro with Secretariat?
Secretariat got beat multiple times
Id kill to watch all of these horses race together for another Triple Crown.
I guess to see who would come in second.
@@jm1657 I did! Was pretty cool.
I love this program. Thank you!
June 9, 2018 Justify became the 13th Triple Crown Winner, just three years after American Pharoah.
Thank you for posting this!! I still have it on VHS.
I don’t know exactly how I do it but I’ve picked the last two triple crown winners and 10 Kentucky derby winners. I picked Big Brown but he got hurt. I guess Man O War was special but I believe Secretariat is the best horse of all time.
You need to be a handicapper! That's cool. I picked American Pharoah to win it all in march of 15 .
eac 123 Well I have my reservations about making a lot of money using the gifts I have, though I did win some on the Always Dreaming. But here’s what strange and it was so incredible. Country House? I had just bought a house in the country and when my sons pick was scratched it went to 50 to 1 Country House and as the lord is my witness I just almost picked him. lol now that would have been crazy and I had his name in my mouth but just didn’t do it. lol
There is a special place in horsey heaven for Alydar and Sham!
Sham was agreat horse hewould have won in any. Other year but secretariat was the super horse and sham was. Big Reds only compitition
Alydar got a bum deal in life... All around. Had some lousy trips in the Triple Crown. Wide on the turns, covering more ground than Affirmed. The
Then, in the end, most likely murdered for insurance money.
@@GFHanks really I don't know that story can you tell me more
@@bhupeshshelake At the time of Alydar's death, he was at Calumet Farm for breeding purposes.
I used to have the VHS of this...I am not sure I still do, so thank you for posting this.
I did too; my mom got it for me and I loved it so much I wore it out. I can't find it on DVD
EXCITING AND INTRIGUING....IMPRESSIVE AND TOP NOTCH HISTORY
Until about 6 months ago I lived just around the corner from Churchill Downs. Many interesting local relics still exist in one form or another if you know where to to look...the"Whirlaway Inn" on 4th St., and the
home on Central and 3rd of Roscoe "The Goose", jockey who rode Donerail, a 91-1 logshot to win the Derby in 1913 .
Another awesome upload!!! Thank you so much Partymanners. You're the BEST!!!
Whirlaway after watching that Preakness performance is my freakin hero. Good GOD!!
bubblinbrownsugar616 Can you imagine how modern announcers, especially the 'more hysterical ones', would call that backstretch run? From where he started to where he ended up completely burying the field...a lot of people have never learned about the sheer POWER of crazy "Mr. Longtail". I've always felt that he and Count Fleet...who "won the Withers just to stay sharp"...are underrated as among the most amazing horses ever to watch.
My Favorite is Seabiscuit and Secretariat
Whirlaway’s Preakness is the most amazing race I have ever seen!!! (Barring Secretariat’s Belmont Stakes.)
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.
i’d forgotten about alydar, great matches, what happened to thoroughbreds?
The great Jim McKay, always makes me think of horse racing or the Indy 500.
I like how Sir Barton won the Preakness four days after the derby, then won the Withers before winning the Belmont.
Incredible story. I never heard it.
VampireYoshi I loved the match race
Man O War was Seabiscuits grandfather (sire)
SECERTARIAT............ !!!❤❤❤
My favorite is the one and only, secretariat, secretariat forever
You better know it!
If anyone ever asks me what was the most perfect athletic performance of all time, I'll never hesitate to say, "Secretariat, Belmont Stakes, 1973".
Great footage, thank you. Love the Count Fleet section, great horse.
Secretariat had the X Factor. Pretty awesome.
How many of you remember the filly Landaluce. She would of won the triple crown in my opinion. Greatest horse i ever watched run in person. And i have seen some greats.
James Abraham ruffian was something
Secretariat my ❤️❤️
Affirmed won that race SICK....won belmont sick!! How I know? My dad trained affirmed!! Laz was just there for press!!! I love u my dad pablo ortiz!!
Oh awesome. Lafit told me Affirmed was his favorite horse!
I've never seen this video before. Awesome.
Ain't no horse gonna beat Secretariat's Belmont record under two minutes 1.59 FLAT
Whirlaway was an impressive horse. Second best Triple Crown winner after Secretariat. Citation gets my 3rd best.
E.Arcaro rode both and he said CITATION was better...I have the original. win picture winning the Hollywood Gold Cup in1951..calumet contract rider...Steve Brooks (up)
It might not mean much in the USA, but Secretariat also sired a Melbourne Cup winner. Kingston Rule in 1990.
Now there is 13 Triple Crown Winners...Justify makes the list.
my favorite is Seattle slew and secrtariat
MAKE Eternity oh that's cool
Me two and Sea bird
It is on dvd, order from ABC sports. I used to have it on VHS, but I wore it out.
Interesting Documentary and facts but only could watch 4:30 minutes of it because of the music and the narration was annoying, shame…
13 Triple Crown Winners!! 🐴
I love the horses names!!! I got drunk last night and just spent the whole night reading about old winning Kentucky Derby horses names, ya know like Money Moves or MidNight Bourbon
I would love to see the race in which Man O" War won by more than 100 lenghts.
❤
Me three!
As of June 6 2015, time to update!
irisheyes317 As of June 9th, 2018, we need another update
Sorry to tell you that as the creator and producer of this show it won't be updated. Once the Triple Crown moved to NBC and Jim passed away it was obviously impossible
It's late May, 2020. I was a huge racing fan in the seventies, thrilled by Secretariat.
Secretariat was Greatest Horse there ever was.
Mystic Dan in the future book
Thanks Jim Mackey
Nice one.
In the next 300years there will be a horse like Secretariat
Anyone know what the theme song for the intro is? It always gave me goosebumps. Especially at 00:57 . Jim McKay's narration is gold here too
We won't get to 13 this year. I thought perhaps Nyquist might be versatile enough to do it, but the Preakness went all wrong. You have to be pretty incredible to win the Triple Crown. You probably can't be at your best three times in five weeks so you need something truly special to pull off this feat. Some great horses could not do it.
steven cooke
Notice that Alydar is pointed out as would-have-been Triple Crown winner if he was not there at same time as Affirmed. There was 10-year gap already after Affirmed's Triple Crown, and it wasn't won again until June of this year.
awesome video
And now there is 13 triple crown champions, American Pharaoh 2015 and Justify 2018
It would be great if this were available on DVD
Secectariat is the best one
Now after California Chromes sad loss we can hope for Cozmic One and Jess's Dream in 2015. Both are sired by Preakness Stakes Winners (Cozmic One by Bernardini, Jess's Dream by Rachel Alexandra and Curlin)
Horses are definitely a wonder, but not of nature but of GOD! Read Job. ❤
How good was Whirlaway? ive only recently started watching US racing(some great horses) but this is the 1st time i seen Whirlaway,he was brilliant.
tubeyhamster Me too,he looked World class.
The TC races are only one part of a horse's career.
marysueeasteregg P.S. Citation at 3: 20: 19-1-0 Whirlaway at 3: 20:13-5-2
