Great video!! Did you know that white tie is still quite common at balls and academic gatherings at Swedish universities? White waistcoat for the balls, black for academic gatherings. And people often do it properly (though the fit isn't always the best). It has been like that the past 100 years! :)
Yes, still plenty of formal and semi-formal events at Swedish universities. See people in suits and tail coats walking around Lund all the time, especially on the weekends. Pretty cool considering any sort of formal or nice attire is practically non-existent in US universities.

An important detail that newcomers to this dress code often overlook is the fitting of the white tie itself. In a properly constructed shirt for wearing with a wing collar there is a loop of fabric below the back collar stud. The tie should be threaded through this loop to prevent the tie riding up the back of the collar.
One should also wear a fitted self-tie bow tie to eliminate the adjuster since the whole tie will be visible at times. And the collar should be above the tie, not behind it, though it's difficult to find collars that fit properly these days.
UndeterminedCoolAviationName indeed. I was almost going to get a white tie made to measure but 1000€ is just too much for an average guy to put on an ensemble he will only wear once. it would've been dapper as hell tho.

In my native Finland, white tie, while by no means usual, is relatively common. I seem to remember someone saying it is more common here than black tie. It is worn in the public doctoral defenses and their after-parties, by guests who get invited to the presidential palace ball on Independence Day, and in senior high school "old dances" that are kind of like the American prom except more formal and ceremonial. That being said, the "dark suit" is the default alternative to white tie.
Black vest is mandatory during formal academic events in Uppsala and Lund the two oldest universities in Sweden. The men then change to a white vest for the dinner in the evening. A black vest is also mandatory during dinners with fraternal orders where white tie is required and as such I get to wear white tie with a black vest at least a dozen times a year.
The etiquette commanded that 1) With evening wear, you always have to wear an overcoat, because it's too extravagant to wear on the street, and also to protect it from dust and dirt 2) You wear the white scarf to protect you shirt front and bow tie from dust and dirt 3) You don't wear white gloves on the street. You only wear these when dancing with a woman wearing gloves or at special gala evenings. On the street, you wear other colour gloves. But please, not black, those are for funerals, and for servants. ;) I am not sure, but I think I read it in the Gesellschaflicher Wegweiser für alle Lebenslagen from 1927, do you know that book? :)
This video has inspired me to wear white tie to prom next year. Undoubtebly I'll be the only guy wearing it, and I'm fine with that. I also plan to wear white tie when I get married.
It's so disappointing that the white tie dress code is almost non existent in Australia. Actually thinking of making my 25th (still over a year away) a white tie affair because I really want to go all out in dressing up at least once in life, preferably sooner rather than later.
Storm Fullbuster Thanks for the well wishes, it's a shame that such an elegant dress code is fading away, the art of dressing well is less appreciated unfortunately.
The only problem with that is that for everyone else it's a large expense even to hire white tie. It's literally only worn in England if you're invited to dine with the royal family, even then that's largely a black tie affair.
My husband wore a morning suit and top hat for our wedding. As he wears a nice suit every day for work I wanted him to feel special and as dressed up as I was. I think my husband would look good in white tie too, such a shame it’s not worn to the ballet or the opera so much now.
It would take some incredible tailoring to appropriately wrap that dung heap in proper clothing. One cannot imagine him ever looking appropriate, never mind behaving appropriately.
Daniel Bergonzi Donnie’s ties are far too long, with tape keeping them together at the back. He must buy the “extra long” ties to get around his goiter neck and traverse his hanging stomach and still hang below his belt. He’s never clean or crisp looking, with rumpled, ill fitting suits or sloppy sportswear. Apparently if one believes themselves to be perfect and omnipotent, concern for clothing disappears. However, his narcissism keeps him sculpting and dyeing that hair horror and spraying his face with orange foundation.

Using this video as a source for a culture-and-gender fusion outfit I’m planning to present/represent myself in because I want to look good and mess with some “people”-accuracy is something I like emphasizing, so this is highly appreciated ^^
The thing I enjoy about formal, especially white tie, events is that they instantly eliminate the "what should I wear" question (at least for the men, sorry ladies). It's set. White tie is white tie. It's direct, unambiguous and perfect. Also, it could of course be my imagination, but it seems to me that people in white tie are also quite a bit politer than they would be in casual. It is almost as if they don't want to embarrass the formal dress they wear.
This is one of those videos that is so niche you wouldn't ever be able to wear the outfit in an appropriate occasion, but nevertheless it's awfully enjoyable to sit through and watch Raphael explain.
If you go to university im sure there are plenty of opportunities. Though most people can't pull it off to low rise on the pants and to much waist coast showing.
In my high school orchestra ensemble, the boys were required to purchase and wear a white tie tuxedo when performing, but a few years ago the requirement was changed to black tie, so we would have some people wearing white tie while other people were wearing black tie.
I never bought the cloak (cape) to go with my mess uniform. I would have been midnight blue with a lighter blue lining. Two large silver buttons from my regiment and a piece of silver chain to hold it in place. I got my mess uniform for my wedding. And it was in the summer.
According to a Norwegian 1960 book on proper manners and dress, white tie ensembles would use a black waistcoat in a similar fashion to the white, IF the evening was mens only. Since mens only evening affairs usually happened at lounges, the black waistcoat is called a "lounge-vest" (losjevest)
I was horrified at the white tie ensemble worn by Trump at the state dinner with the Queen. It was so poorly fitted that it was comical. I'm springing for a custom tailored model if I'm ever invited to the palace to dine with the Queen.
I've noticed that about him. For a guy that has his own clothing line, his suits were always the most poor fitting off the rack looking thing they could find. He might as well just put on a zoot suit. After doing some digging, I think what it is, Trump just lies about his size. He states he is 6'3" but, if you look at photos of him next Jeb Bush who is also 6'3" Trump is much shorter. Even Justin Trudeau has a few inches on him and he's 6'2".
Mr. Trump was a real embarrassment. His inner waist coat screamed for any viewers attention for being ridiculously loose and long. No one told him before? Amazing
Very interesting video. Where I am from even business suits are quite rarely worn outside of offices of foreign businesses and weddings, and it's mostly for the bridal party. The equivalent of black tie here doesn't even include a suit, jacket, or tie of any kind. Which is understandable because in many places even the coldest nights are over 27°C (80°F) with over 90% humidity. Unfortunately, that also means you can't really look too dapper at all.
White Tie is the most formal dress code that a gentleman can wear in the Western hemisphere, and it comes with its own sets of rules and regulations. For footwear, patent leather opera pumps are the only acceptable option, and your hosiery must be made of a sheer black silk. The only appropriate headwear for a White Tie ensemble is a black silk top hat, which can be paired with an evening overcoat (with lapels faced in silk and silk-covered buttons), a white silk scarf and white kid gloves in the winter. The bow tie (made out of a white Marcella cotton) that goes with the White Tie ensemble must never be pre-tied, always one that you can tie yourself and sized to fit your neck perfectly. As for the White Tie dress shirt, it must have a Marcella bib front with a high-standing, detachable wing collar (fastened with [mother-of-pearl] collar studs). The shirt has single cuffs that are fastened with cufflinks and the bib accommodates 1-3 studs (depending on the wearer's height). Normally the cufflinks, shirt studs, [collar studs], and waistcoat buttons come as a set and are made out of mother-of-pearl. The pants have a double galon (braided or silk) down the sides and are high-waisted so as to be worn with suspenders (which are usually made of a white silk). The tailcoat is black, must be tailored to fit the body perfectly, has 6 decorative silk-covered buttons on the placket (three on each side), peaked lapels that are faced in silk, does not button in the front and is paired with a low-cut white Marcella waistcoat, fastened with exchangeable mother-of-pearl waistcoat buttons. It is common practise to wear a boutonniere (normally a white carnation) and white (silk or linen) pocket square with a White Tie ensemble. For a finishing flourish, you can carry an ebony cane with a silver handle (knob). In conclusion, I think that White Tie is an underrated dress code that deserves more recognition in this day and age, so I thank the Gentleman's Gazette for coming out with this brilliant video and hope to see more like it in the future.
The point is that if I ever get invited to a dinner or a party, (in the future) and the dress code is White Tie, then this video might be helpful for me. That´s the point I was trying to make.
“Most formal in the Western Hemisphere” This is a painful fact I learned when I dared to show up to a “white-tie” event in the proper attire just 20km east of Greenwich in London. Did NOT go down well.
Wow...I had to hit the pause button about a million times to catch up on all the info mentioned in this one. What I'm wondering is 1) What are some occasions that would require a white tie ensemble 2) what places would be able to make one/have one available 3) What are the options for black tie events (tuxedo, tails, evening jackets, etc)
First of all i thank you for this amazing video, I would like to ask you whether it's wrong to wear an off-white waistcoat and bowtie, because they used to wear it so in formal events
Need help on this issue. If I wanted to use this guide to help me decide on formal wear for a bachelor party and wedding, it would go - Black tie Formal for a “bachelor” party - white tie ensemble for groomsmen and groom, with full suits for guests? I’d like to have a proper day with my mates and bride, so what would you suggest (in detail)?
I think really specific details like slippers vs opera pumps could leave someone feeling like they could never pull this look off for fear that of being judged simply because the vamp of the shoe isn't deep enough.
Agreed, the guide online says no slippers… and I know what is presented here is supposed to be the basic definition of white tie. However, some things need to be modernized, like the opera pumps (which are slippers). Black patent slippers with a higher vamp offer a more modern and masculine look, so that’s what I wear for white tie
Fred Astaire dancing in White Tie... before the war they wore tailcoats every night for special occasions, weddings, etc. Amazing how on every old Hollywood movie you'd see everyone in White or Black Tie every 30 mins or so. Why can't we have nice things in life...
I am going on the Queen Mary 2 in the spring for a roundtrip cross-ocean voyage. I'd like to wear white tie to dinner for at least one of the formal nights. Where can I buy the proper attire?
I am set to perform 2 concertos and I really want to have a white tie ensemble to perform in. But is there a recommended store i should go to? because i cannot find many stores in the US with white tie attire as an option
Would it be count as white tie if I use regency black breeches with black stockings? Because I bought vintage tailcoat and waistcoat and I want go all in, so waiting for answer. Oh and also what's the name of that fob (Im not talking about watch chain, I want to know name of the other fob the one that hang from the pocket)
What do you do for white tie if you have longer hair? Do you just tie your hair back into a ponytail? And I know Brooks brothers still makes tailcoats. What are your thoughts on the Brooks Brothers brand white tie clothing?
Could you do a video about he mixture of black and white. I’ve seen things from esquire back in the 30’s with people wearing a tail coat with a black vest or a white vest with a tux.
I just wamt to know ..do tailcoat tuxedo with tailcoat same cut like white tie..only got black waistcoat and black tie black pants...do d regency era or other era thier wear tailcoat tuxedo...plz do video explain about tailcoat tuxedo..thanks
I just got an invitation through the mails "Your presence requested this evening It's formal, a top hat, a white tie and tails" Nothing now could take the wind out of my sails Because I'm invited to step out this evening With top hat and white tie and tails I'm puttin' on my top hat Tyin' up my white tie Brushin' off my tails I'm dudin' up my shirt front Puttin' in the shirt studs Polishin' my nails I'm steppin' out, my dear To breathe an atmosphere That simply reeks with class And I trust that you'll excuse my dust When I step on the gas For I'll be there Puttin' down my top hat Mussin' up my white tie Dancin' in my tails I'm puttin' on my top hat Tyin' up my white tie Brushin' off my tails…
do you have any tips on finding a reputable men's shoppe/tailor? there are so hard to find where I am at, and if I do one more search only to find "JC Penny" or "Men's Wearhouse", I'll have a fit... There needs to be an App for that!!!!!!!!!
I have a White Tie ball in June - very exciting! I am struggling to find the trousers with two stripes though (and I am not spending £200 to get them from one of the two shops that seem to sell them). How okay is it to stick with a regular black tie pair of trousers?
I don’t know how rigorous your event is, but I had the exact same problem, I eventually compromised on buying normal, one stripe tuxedo pants and nobody noticed
When was the galon stripe on the trousers introduced and when did it become the standard for the white tie ensemble? When I look at a lot of images of white tie during the Victorian era, most of the time, the trousers are missing the galon.
Is there a special etiquette for the top hat? Or does it just follow the overall hat etiquette. I guess most formal events will be considered private, and for that reason you cannot wear it, or??
I like this outfit. It reminds me of the Indian navy's mess uniform It is very similar to this, a white morning coat but the tail is shorter, a white stiff front shirt underneath and a black bowtie. Other than that was another mess uniform this was the same thing but with black
A very bombastic relequi of the past. I actually have known a group of people that used to dress like this, to go out and hang around by the absynth bars of Brussels, Belgium. We used to call them victorian goths...
could you wear a Prince Charlie with white tie? I know you can wear it with black tie and I would assume you've could with white tie but I'm not 100% sure (and for anyone who has no idea would a Prince Charlie is it's a special kind of formal jacket you wear with a kilt)

It's the same in the Netherlands.

This is a painful fact I learned when I dared to show up to a “white-tie” event in the proper attire just 20km east of Greenwich in London. Did NOT go down well.
I think they meant "western world"
but for real, imagine something more formal than a white tie
@@SarimFaruque Ceremonil Court uniform. I know it is equal to White tie, but it looks more formal.
Thank you, sir
Well, a gentleman is a gentleman regardless of age. Best of luck to you
So glad I found this! Very useful as I am going to draw a character in a white tie outfit. Thanks!
Just exactly what I was searching for... I love this channel. :)
Satisfying video. Seeing that guy in white tie wearing that sneaker looking like shoes killed me man.
Trump in the UK wearing evening dress with his waistcoat hanging down to his knees... doing the USA proud as usual /s.
If only there was actually events where you could wear white tie in the US 😅
So true.............I'm trying to pry a tailcoat out of my parents at age 13, even though it's useless.
So far I have a dinner jacket.
The annual Al Smith Charity Dinner in New York is still a white tie function.
If you are a groom at your wedding, you and your family can wear white tie easily.
That's cool, Im 14 and I have a white tie outfit. I know its an evening coat but some times I wear it in the daytime when I feel more "Victorian"
My dude's lookin fresh 👍👍👌👌
Juancarlos Valdez. I agree
Just got some white tie and tails from the 1930s today!
Looking sharp and well dressed is never a wrong choice.
What a Wonderful video. I just have a question, where can you get those kind of trousers? I hope all is well!
First of all i thank you for this amazing video, I would like to ask you whether it's wrong to wear an off-white waistcoat and bowtie, because they used to wear it so in formal events
What type of overcoat should I use in spring and summertime when wearing tails?
Need help on this issue.
If I wanted to use this guide to help me decide on formal wear for a bachelor party and wedding, it would go
- Black tie Formal for a “bachelor” party
- white tie ensemble for groomsmen and groom, with full suits for guests?
I’d like to have a proper day with my mates and bride, so what would you suggest (in detail)?
I think really specific details like slippers vs opera pumps could leave someone feeling like they could never pull this look off for fear that of being judged simply because the vamp of the shoe isn't deep enough.
Agreed, the guide online says no slippers… and I know what is presented here is supposed to be the basic definition of white tie. However, some things need to be modernized, like the opera pumps (which are slippers). Black patent slippers with a higher vamp offer a more modern and masculine look, so that’s what I wear for white tie
You've discussed detachable collars. How do I find the collar that will work for me?
Fred Astaire dancing in White Tie... before the war they wore tailcoats every night for special occasions, weddings, etc. Amazing how on every old Hollywood movie you'd see everyone in White or Black Tie every 30 mins or so. Why can't we have nice things in life...
I am going on the Queen Mary 2 in the spring for a roundtrip cross-ocean voyage. I'd like to wear white tie to dinner for at least one of the formal nights. Where can I buy the proper attire?
Very informative, Sven. Many thanks for this video.
I am set to perform 2 concertos and I really want to have a white tie ensemble to perform in. But is there a recommended store i should go to? because i cannot find many stores in the US with white tie attire as an option
Today I saw a white tie outfit in all white (including tailcoat and trousers). Is there any occasion where that would be appropriate?
Would it be count as white tie if I use regency black breeches with black stockings? Because I bought vintage tailcoat and waistcoat and I want go all in, so waiting for answer. Oh and also what's the name of that fob (Im not talking about watch chain, I want to know name of the other fob the one that hang from the pocket)
What do you do for white tie if you have longer hair? Do you just tie your hair back into a ponytail?
And I know Brooks brothers still makes tailcoats. What are your thoughts on the Brooks Brothers brand white tie clothing?
Just remember the song:
"Your presence requested this evening
It's formal, a top hat, a white tie and tails."
Does an imperial collar work for white tie instead of a wing collar?
Could you do a video about he mixture of black and white. I’ve seen things from esquire back in the 30’s with people wearing a tail coat with a black vest or a white vest with a tux.

I just got an invitation through the mails
"Your presence requested this evening
It's formal, a top hat, a white tie and tails"
Nothing now could take the wind out of my sails
Because I'm invited to step out this evening
With top hat and white tie and tails
I'm puttin' on my top hat
Tyin' up my white tie
Brushin' off my tails
I'm dudin' up my shirt front
Puttin' in the shirt studs
Polishin' my nails
I'm steppin' out, my dear
To breathe an atmosphere
That simply reeks with class
And I trust that you'll excuse my dust
When I step on the gas
For I'll be there
Puttin' down my top hat
Mussin' up my white tie
Dancin' in my tails
I'm puttin' on my top hat
Tyin' up my white tie
Brushin' off my tails…
Ah, a man of culture.
I think you can go repro if the build is good and the material is excellent
Excellent video; one of your best!
Hey, Sven. Can a black waistcoat be included in a white tie tuxedo?
do you have any tips on finding a reputable men's shoppe/tailor? there are so hard to find where I am at, and if I do one more search only to find "JC Penny" or "Men's Wearhouse", I'll have a fit... There needs to be an App for that!!!!!!!!!
Tbh, I don't have much reason to use a white tie, but I'm sure I'll find a way to wear one some day. :)
You need a video about jeans
Tailors in UK also refer to waistcoats (pronounced "wesk'ts" ) as vests -as did Samuel Pepys in his diary.....
Question on buttons on the tailcoat. Fabric or other type?
I have a White Tie ball in June - very exciting! I am struggling to find the trousers with two stripes though (and I am not spending £200 to get them from one of the two shops that seem to sell them). How okay is it to stick with a regular black tie pair of trousers?
I don’t know how rigorous your event is, but I had the exact same problem, I eventually compromised on buying normal, one stripe tuxedo pants and nobody noticed
I love to wear white tie at the annual May Balls!
When was the galon stripe on the trousers introduced and when did it become the standard for the white tie ensemble? When I look at a lot of images of white tie during the Victorian era, most of the time, the trousers are missing the galon.
I want to have a white tie dress code at my wedding, opinions?
Can white tie be worn in a wedding that's starts at five and it goes well into the evening?
That was a perfect fit! Great video
Where do you get this magnificent garment?
Great outfit. Would love to wear something similar in the future
Is there a special etiquette for the top hat? Or does it just follow the overall hat etiquette.
I guess most formal events will be considered private, and for that reason you cannot wear it, or??
i love your videos! btw. do you have examples of your white ensemble from your wedding available?
Love the video! I really want to go to a white tie event! Can you do a video on how to buy a top hat?
good vid. if you're watching please NB that Mr M. Ali did not wear that to a white tie event
I feel like "Do not wear a morning coat" was in 5 places on this list lol.
Say your going to the Opera Do you wear a regular Top hat or an Opera Hat?
If your silk flowers are handmade here in germany, can i get them somewhere here without shiping it around the world?
I like this outfit. It reminds me of the Indian navy's mess uniform
It is very similar to this, a white morning coat but the tail is shorter, a white stiff front shirt underneath and a black bowtie. Other than that was another mess uniform this was the same thing but with black
Ive had one white tie event i had to attend and it was nerve-wrecking for me. I wish i had this video then! However, I think i pulled it off ok.
Any suggestions to buy a white tie tuxedo and top hat
A very bombastic relequi of the past. I actually have known a group of people that used to dress like this, to go out and hang around by the absynth bars of Brussels, Belgium. We used to call them victorian goths...
my disdain for the lower class has greatly increased
cant teel if ur sarcastic lol
love white tie
So glad I don't have to go to a white tie event ever in my life.
Hi! Saw Gagliardi featured in this video again! What are your thoughts on them, Sven?
Detailed well, thank you very much!
could you wear a Prince Charlie with white tie? I know you can wear it with black tie and I would assume you've could with white tie but I'm not 100% sure (and for anyone who has no idea would a Prince Charlie is it's a special kind of formal jacket you wear with a kilt)
