I genuinely laughed out loud at your explanation of 'How to tell when your spindle is full.' I'd love to try spinning some lace weight yarn with a supported spindle. So far I've only used a drop spindle and have gotten sock weight yarn off it.
GIVEAWAY - I'm giving away Nutty! For a chance to win, leave a comment on this video and tell me what you would spin with a support spindle. The winner will be chosen on January 26, 2025. Rules and details are in the video description. Good luck!
This video was FULL of great information! Thank you!!! If I am the lucky winner, I'd use the spindle for raw silk fluff. I'll be better able to spin a thin but strong fiber using a supported spindle. Thanks again for your content!
This is really helpful. I’ve struggled with what it looks like to get set up and started in a support spindle. I can’t find any detailed instructions and video.
OOO OOO OOOO...I want the wood blocks. I will have to see what I have to make those with...hmmmmm scraps...in my barn...oh yes. yay! I love youtube pause.
I’ve been support spindle spinning for around a year now, but was firmly in the park and draft zone with no idea how to become more fluid. Your video now has me flirting with more continuous spinning. Thank you!// I will say when I started the very beginning stage was so hard. Going from an empty spindle and a handful of floof to a spin in progress took me literal months. I bet true beginners would really benefit from a tutorial about how to get started
I have only used top whorl spindles up to now, and what I've found is that I really enjoy woolen spinning. I would love to try a support spindle, but it always looks like magic when I see other spinners do it (I still need two hands to draft!). Thank you so much for this video! I feel like I could actually do a supported spin now!
I love that you made this video for beginners! Whenever I watch someone support spindling, they seem to move smoothly and with ease. I’ve tried it once and struggled, so I’ll have to use the tips and try again. I have a small batt that a friend processed and I think would spin well on a support spindle.
I've been curious about support spindle spinning for a while. Your tutorial makes me feel like I could finally be brave and try it out. You were the 'coach' that took my drop spindle spinning to the next level. My neurodivergent brain wants to do a study of a fleece spun different ways on all different spinning tools, wheels, drop spindles of various shapes, supported spindles, singles, 2-ply and 3-ply, maybe even a 4-ply(something I've never done yet!)!
I love everything you touch as it seems to spin into gold🤗 I am a new spinner, and i must admit, “Nutty” perfectly describes me, from the moment you walk into my home, you will see a childhood painting of a squirrel holding an acorn and inscribed inside the acorn says, “Welcome to the NutHouse”🤗🤓 A bit nutty is always full of life🙃 Thank you for yet another amazing video!🫶
As I was watching your tutorial I was thinking of the fiber I do have. My daughter gave me a bump of 100% alpaca a few years back & I thought it would be perfect with this spindle.
I’m so excited for new tutorials from you. They’re always so helpful, you effectively taught me not only to spin, but also that lumps are okay and everyone is always learning! Thank you for all you do for the fibre community ❤
Lovely spinning-I've been trying to learn supported spinning via making my own, and it seriously felt like you were talking about my journey!! I'm excited to try using the support spindle for wilds fibers, like dogbane and milkweed, since it would give more control over the somewhat weaker fibers.
I have been spinning for 2 weekend now thanks to your great videos and i love it. I would love to try a supported spindle as I am spinning with a drop spindle right now. My dream is to make enough yarn to knit something for myself.
Drop spindles intimidate me but supported spindling looks so much more in sync with me! I would love to get a chance to try it. I have some BFL I'd love to try spinning with it, and maybe make a shawl out of it!
I've been spinning with drop spindles for a while now, and just recently got a spinning wheel! But i've never had the chance to try suported spinning, and i would love to try it with some handdyed wool that my mom got me for christmas
I would spin a variety of fibers to find out which fiber was fun to spin. It would probably be combed top, but I'd try rolags, too. Cotton would probably be the first fiber I'd try.
I love drop spindles, my 2025 goal is get as productive with my supported spindle. I have some merino silk in greens that I love to use I definitely want to spin that .❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have used a drop spindle but I haven’t tried a supported one. I think I could try one now. Not sure what project I would spin yet. I need to get some more fiber. 😊
I have bags and bags of alpaca that I have been working through, one day I would love to spin some wool. Supported spindles are relatively new to me and Id love to start spinning for making my own clothing apparel - ambitious? Yes! 😂
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this through video. I have spun with drop spindles and still use them on occasion. I have tried, very unsuccessfully, to use a support spindle. After watching this I feel prepared to give it a whirl again 😊
Really great tutorial Evie! I struggle with spindle spinning and your explanations were super helpful. I have a fleece that I want to process in the spring and would love to spindle spin the wool from that!
72 yards = almost 66 meters And thank you so so mucht for that tutorial. I have a supported spindle, but ended up usng it as a drop spindle and although my yarn is really thin (I aim for thin) and pretty consistent, I couldn't figure out any other way than park and draft
Thank you for all your tutorials, they are a labour of love, and I appreciate then a lot. I would like to spin yarn for socks, but I need a lot of training for that.
I've been wanting or desiring to create a blended yarn using some leftover and newer fibers for an experimental fun yarn to use is a future knit project. trying a support spindle would be kind of fun and make for a wonderful spinning experience
You’re an amazing teacher! I had become frustrated with Support spindling, an uncoordinated hot mess express🤣. Now, thanks to your video, I’m giving it another go and finding some success. Thank you so much! A project I would make a supported spindle would be a small agurami dog for my brother-in-law. He’s battling cancer. And while he’s staying with us, he has taken to loving my dog. So, I’d make a dog for his own.
I am dying to learn how to support spindle. I’ll probably give some undyed corridale in my stash a go but ultimately I’d love to spin my own home grown fibres! ❤ thank you so much for the tutorial!!!
I have been hand carding a hog island sheep wool and would love to try it out on a supported spindle! The fibers range from medium length to very short, so spinning it on my wheel has been a bit of a challenge
Galina Khmeleva is coming to Utah in April and teaching a class on spinning gossamer yarn on supported spindles... on a Friday morning! Argh! Why do I have a job!? Whatever, I need to practice spinning regular yarn first 😅
Thank you for this beautiful video! It's wonderfully presented. 💗 And I would use a supported spindle to spin the soft and fluffy llama fiber I have. I'm wanting to make a neck warmer out of some of it. 😊
Thank you for this! I was gifted a takhli spindle and have been attempting to spin cotton on it. It has not been going well, but I think some of your tips will help! I would love to experience a spindle like nutty and am working on creating a cheviot/alpaca blend batt to make a shawl for my sister!
I have never tried spindle spinning, and am itching to give it a go!! I would probably start with a small project, maybe a hat from some malabrigo fibre I just picked up 😊
I’m trying to ply my second ever length of yarn, and it’s so calming to watch someone who knows what they’re doing while I fumble about! 😂😂 My Hardworking Kate is currently two plastic boxes with a toy weighting them down… it seems to work! Thank you for another excellent how-to. I’ll be referring back to it many many times, I think. ❤
Thank you. You have given me the courage and information I need to try again with my Russian type support spindle. I will be spinning alpaca, so, your tutorial covered the process perfectly.
This is an awesome tutorial! I've only spun with a drop spindle before so if I'm lucky enough to get a support spindle this will be very helpful. I guess I would make a thank you gift for my cousin who got me a lazy Kate for Christmas (my name is Kate) and she got her mom a lazy Susan (guess what her name is😂)
I have a load of chocolate color alpaca fiber that I would love to spin with nutty. I have a little bit of experience with a drop spindle and a wheel but nutty would be my first supported spindle style. Thank you for all the information, education and spinning content you create. You have been so helpful in my spinning journey
Thank you for this video. I have been struggling with my support spindle. I will try your techniques and maybe I can spin some yarn to do accents on fingerless gloves.
Great tutorial video (as usual :D )! If I'm lucky enough to win Nutty, I would definitely use her to demonstrate supported spinning in my historic spinning demonstrations, and I'd spin up some lovely cocoa alpaca fiber into yarn to knit into a nice lacy scarf (which would then join my other handspun knitted items for my display).
What a useful tutorial! I've appreciated how detailed and useful all of your tutorials have been, I got into soinning a few years ago out of curiosity and your channel has been absolutely amazing in helping me develop my skill! Curious to try out supported spinning one day, I definitely have some bags of mystery discounted fiber that I've been meaning to spin...
I recently inherited some fiber from my grandmother but I didnt have anything to spin it with. If I were to get a support spindle, I would use it to spin up some of that fiber that I've been dying to use.
I would spin socks yarn with or alpaga or shetland fleeces friends offered me ❤ its been a long time now that i want to discover the supported spindle !
I would try spinning sock yarn. I've read the it must be very thin with extra twist to make the yarn strong. I think I'd be able to do that better on a supported spindle than a drop spindle. Would love to try anyway 😉😉
I have never spun on a spindle before but would love to give it a go and make a shawl out small scarf to start and then a larger project like a sweater. Thank you so much for your very informative guide. I look forward to giving this a go.
Thanks for this tutorial! I love my Turkish Spindle, but have also been interested in the supported spindle for a bit now. I have some corriedale that I'd be curious to spin with it!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been interested in support spindle spinning, but just haven't had the courage to dive in yet. I'd definitely try spinning the yak fiber I was gifted for my birthday with Nutty. Fancy fiber for a fancy spindle. 😊
Thanks for the great tutorial, those wood blocks look amazing but I might try the shoe box … if I won I’d spin some yarn to crochet a pouch for my spindles,I’m intrigued to trysupported! Thanks Jillian and good luck all x🥰
So happy to see a new tutorial from you. Your spinning lessons are the best. I have not tried spinning on a supported spindle yet. Would love to try a silk blend fiber. Happy New Year!
I just started my spinning journey with a drop spindle. I'd love to try a supported spindle. My mother and grandmother have always crocheted, so that's how I started, but now I'm getting into knitting and learning more about quality yarns. I'd love to try spinning something with partial content of a sustainable fiber like hemp.
Thank you for your teaching videos! I've been wanting to try a spindle for a long time, but have put it off not knowing what type to try. If I could successfully spin some wool I'd like to use the thread in my art quilts or hand weaving small pieces. 💙 🕊
Spinning with a supported spindle is on my spinning wishlist. I have some 3d printed turkish spindle that I'll spin supported in the car or when watching TV. 😊
Super excited you uploaded this! I've been wondering how to spin with supported spindles! I'd spin yarn for socks with it, probably a merino nylon blend, so I'd have some super special handmade socks forever.
i would love to spin some czech wool processed in slovakia, so it's all very local to me:) i've never spun with a supported spindle but i'd love to try! maybe a shawl or a scarf
I made a supported spindle from chop sticks and clay, and use it all the time to make yarn for weaving. Having a “real” supported spindle would be awesome😊
I have some silk merino blend I bought at the local fibre market that would go nicely on a supported spindle. I’ve never spun silk and keep putting it off as I worry I’ll mess it up, perhaps a new spindle would be good motivation to just do it!
Great explanations. You look so in control. I’ve tried supported spindle but it seems frantic when I do it - and inconsistent. Moving your hand up is a great tip. I also didn’t know about the width of the whorl determining the speed. Thanks
Hi Evie 😊 I've been watching since subscribers were in the 20's. You taught me to spin on a drop spindle, then you taught me to spin on a wheel (I chose a Matchless), and I want to learn supported. If Nutty were in my care, my first project would be to spin up for some fingerless mitts to keep my hands warm while I spin. I'm thinking of some alpaca that I have to make the soft, flexible and warm mitts. Your loyal Fiber Friend, Wendy in Colorado
I love this tutorial so much! I'm new to spinning and have been struggling with a drop spindle and wondered if a support spindle would help me learn. Thank you for the chance to win that gorgeous little 'Nutty' supported spindle! My DIL gave me some beautifully fine Merino that I'd love to spin, then knit a cosy cowl.
Thank you for these teaching tutorials ❤. I have been on the lookout 👀 for a supported spindle, they look so soothing and quiet and portable 😊 I started with drop spindling and moved onto a wheel…oh sigh…fiber life is simply the best ❤ shalom to you and your family
I absolutely loved this video! I have recently started spinning. The drop spindle has been, like you mentioned, so relaxing to me. Is it perfect? No, but that is the beauty of handspun yarn. Just like humans, no 2 are exactly alike! I really want to try a supported spindle. I have some alpaca ready and waiting!😊
Thank you! Your tutorial gave me the confidence along with the information needed to actually learn to spin with a supported spindle. I will be spinning alpaca, so your tutorial was perfect.
Very helpful video, Evie! I would (and do!) use supported spindling for creating singles yarns to use in small colorfully dyed yarn tapestries. Thanks for your beautiful channel, and sharing your insights with the world!
First, thanks for a wonderful tutorial. I’m very new to support spinning. You provided some wonderful tips and recommendations. I have several batts waiting to be spin woolen.
This video came out at the perfect time - when I was looking at support spindles. Considering I’ve never used one….we will call what I would probably make “art yarn” 😉
I've been spinning on a drop spindle for a month now and am quite addicted. Now it looks like I will have to try a support spindle as well! I just incorporated one of my first spins into a scarf I'm weaving and stockpiling some for a hat to knit or crochet. I'm really enjoying your videos.
If I was to get a supported spindle I would spin my parents patience thin by furthering my hyper focus in the connection between fiber crafts (my hobby) and modern computers (the degree I am working towards) . 😂😂 In all seriousness I would probably go way to big and try to spin enough for a shirt or sweater cause I can’t just start small.
I am a wheel spinner. I have dabbled in drop spindles which was a nightmare. I have a large supported spindle which I like but I want to spin thinner yarns. So I would use Nutty to spin a thinner yarn for lace projects.
I am now supported spindle curious lol. If I acquire one, my first project would be a starter project with some carded Corriedale - one of favourite, forgiving fibres.
Thank you for showing the park and draft as its own proper technique! 😊 I only have a simple wooden support spindle that already starts out sluggish and doesn't run smooth enough for continuous spinning. With a support spindle with better "physics" I'd definitely give continuous spinning a proper go! And isn't walnut just so pretty 🤩 I also had an "Aha!"-moment at the end there with the "tie in more than 2 places"... 😂
This is exactly the sort of instructional video I've been hoping would show up. Now that I'm semi-proficient with my spinning wheel and a couple of different drop spindles, I am itching to learn supported spinning in order to create some lace-weight yarn. There's some lovely silvery Gotlund fiber I've been saving for just such a spin. I understand Gotlund has lovely drape, and I'm ready to see if I can make a Hobbit-worthy cap or kerchief with it. ...Thank you for the links for sources of supported spindles. I trust that you only linked to makers whose works you find both beautiful and useful.
Thank you for the tutorial, I've been thinking I would spend a lot of time learning park and draft (takes me a long time to learn fine motor skills) but the way you explain it has me excited for what I could eventually get to. I think the first thing I'd love to spin is embracing the fact that it's going to be thick and thin yarn and I'll get to turn it into a weaving project, to enjoy that texture.
I ordered my first spindle this week and am hoping to learn to spin this year. So any type of fiber would be a first for me ^^ looking forward to trying a few out
Thanks so much for the video. It will definitely be a help on my journey in learning how to use the support spindle. I would love to spin yarn and use it to knit the Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague.❤
I've told my daughter at least twice in the last year that you have a talent for reading my mind. I just picked up my supported spindle last week, after spending most of my time at my wheel for the last year. I ended up moving my project back to the wheel because the supported spindling was taking too long (I was excited about the wool I was using). Anyway, I have a beautiful Russian-style supported spindle that could use a friend like Nutty, and I would use both to spin my white Hog Island wool for 3-ply sock yarn. I also have to buy some shoes so I can make a Hard-Working Kate for myself. 😉
I genuinely laughed out loud at your explanation of 'How to tell when your spindle is full.'
I'd love to try spinning some lace weight yarn with a supported spindle. So far I've only used a drop spindle and have gotten sock weight yarn off it.
Congrats, you are the winner of the giveaway! Please send me a message with your contact info so I can send you your prize!
GIVEAWAY - I'm giving away Nutty! For a chance to win, leave a comment on this video and tell me what you would spin with a support spindle. The winner will be chosen on January 26, 2025. Rules and details are in the video description. Good luck!
I love your videos!!! I would spin Shetland from my flock of sheep with this gorgeous spindle.
I would try make something simple because it will be the first thing that I make.
Good comment
You are right@@JenniferStewart-w6w
This video was FULL of great information! Thank you!!! If I am the lucky winner, I'd use the spindle for raw silk fluff. I'll be better able to spin a thin but strong fiber using a supported spindle. Thanks again for your content!
Wowie, those spindles go for soooo long! I love making sock yarn on spindles :D
My daughter is learning to card and spin.. this would be a great gift for her. She is cleaning and carding llama fiber right now!!! Good luck everyone

I love support spindling! I’d have a go at doing some sock yarn I think 😊
I would make yarn for my mom with this spindle. She crochets so my goal this year is to make her some yarn :)

Spinning with a supported spindle is on my spinning wishlist. I have some 3d printed turkish spindle that I'll spin supported in the car or when watching TV. 😊

I have some silk merino blend I bought at the local fibre market that would go nicely on a supported spindle. I’ve never spun silk and keep putting it off as I worry I’ll mess it up, perhaps a new spindle would be good motivation to just do it!
Having a very hard time getting the hang of supported spinning, so this is great timing!😊 I have several spindles and want to get better
Great explanations. You look so in control. I’ve tried supported spindle but it seems frantic when I do it - and inconsistent. Moving your hand up is a great tip. I also didn’t know about the width of the whorl determining the speed. Thanks
❤
Hi Evie 😊 I've been watching since subscribers were in the 20's. You taught me to spin on a drop spindle, then you taught me to spin on a wheel (I chose a Matchless), and I want to learn supported. If Nutty were in my care, my first project would be to spin up for some fingerless mitts to keep my hands warm while I spin. I'm thinking of some alpaca that I have to make the soft, flexible and warm mitts.

Love this tutorial! I just started learning to spin a couple months ago and hope that I can eventually spin consistently enough to make sock yarn
❤
I have some alpaca ready and waiting!😊
i have always wanted to spin my own yarn. so many ideas of what to make!
Thank you! Your tutorial gave me the confidence along with the information needed to actually learn to spin with a supported spindle. I will be spinning alpaca, so your tutorial was perfect.
You make the most wonderful tutorials/videos! I would love to win Nutty, I would use her to spin samples of batts and rovings☺️💖
❤
This video came out at the perfect time - when I was looking at support spindles. Considering I’ve never used one….we will call what I would probably make “art yarn” 😉
❤
I have been looking at spinning videos for a while now. I have a Jacob roving that I would love to spin on a supported spindle! Thank you!
I love your videos!! I would spin Shetland from my flock with this gorgeous spindle.
❤
❤
I am now supported spindle curious lol. If I acquire one, my first project would be a starter project with some carded Corriedale - one of favourite, forgiving fibres.
Supported spindle curious! 😊
Great guide on supported spindles! Love learning new stuff. I’ll try cotton. I heard short fibers are good on it.
Thank you for showing the park and draft as its own proper technique! 😊 I only have a simple wooden support spindle that already starts out sluggish and doesn't run smooth enough for continuous spinning. With a support spindle with better "physics" I'd definitely give continuous spinning a proper go! And isn't walnut just so pretty 🤩
I also had an "Aha!"-moment at the end there with the "tie in more than 2 places"... 😂
Thanks for all your spinning content. I'm not very practiced with a drop spindle so I prefer to spin every on a support spindle! ❤
Thank you for this video, I have some lovely yak fibre which I need to spin up.
I have been using a drop spindle but I think that the Nutty would be a easier one for me. Glad to be able to see a new video.
You're absolutely a first-rate UA-camr.
I'm interested in trying some this out sometime, when I can make myself available for another new thing.
❤
I would try spin a sweater quantity of alpaca wool and then knit the wonderful pipi longstocking sweater :D
