I have very painful health issues as well which I was born with. They, so my doctor assured me (!), will only get worse!! This is my challenge and I work with my body and do what I can when I can. So, I agree with you, and anybody else with health issues, I say take care of yourself and listen to your body.

Book reviews would be great! Also including general spinning/weaving/fibre art, as you come across them. I know I have bought a few that I've regretted but in general I love to add to my library!
And I'm so sorry to hear of your health issues. Your videos help me cope with my own health issues and I love to see my mentor's lovely face! Take care of yourself, love. We have an extensive library of yours for when we need an Evie fix. 🙏🏻🥰

Book reviews sound fun. I don't like to mess with the ratios on my king bee, and often keep my louet on the middle whorl. That said, I mess with my espinner all the time, and with the first two, I change my treadling and how near I draft to the orifices, I would love to be able to figure out how to use your method of estimating ratios on my great wheels. I have tried estimating by comparing the diameters, but am not positive of my results. (I am satisfied that one complete turn is a Lot of spins on the whorl... minimum of 58 on one and 62 on the other, but I have no idea if that is really correct. Neither has an accelerator. Can you imagine 100 :1?) I spun for years on a variety of spindles, and I guess I am accustomed to winging it. What a fun topic this is! It does get me thinking again.

You asked if any of us would benefit? enjoy? like? book reviews. Definitely YES from me. I hated "history" when I was in school...wars, dates, men only, rinse and repeat through eh...14 yrs of history classes. How did all these men feed and clothe themselves while killing each other? Why is so much knowledge left out of "history" just because that knowledge was possessed by people who weren't directing battles? I would love to know more about arts, crafts, women's contributions, and the beauty and function people like us have given to the world. Teach me please but do so only when you feel up to it. All that said, first take care of yourself. You are important to many people and if you are not doing okay for yourself, you can't do for others.

Nice video. I think it was in “Respect the Spindle” where I read that we lose 1/3 of the twist when we ply. So, having some degree of over twist in singles is not a bad thing. The author also wrote something to the effect that …having ‘pigtails’ on your spindle is OK.

Thank you for sharing this information. I recently realized that my treadling speed and my whorls could work together for more comfortable spinning. I learned to spin on my Ladybug and had purchased an additional whorl (slow) as the larger one that came with the wheel was still to fast for me to get down all the movements. As my skill increased I began treadling faster, which was not wonderful for my hips for prolonged periods of time. Going to a smaller whorl can allow me to slow down my treadling speed while getting the resulting yarn I am after. I’ve been mulling over all this and your explanations put it all together with a nice little bow on top. Please take care of yourself. Our thoughts are with you ❤

That will depend on your wheel, if your drive band is stretched out, and if you are making a drastic ratio change. If it doesn't grip and you can't adjust the tension then change it out.

My 70's Ashford Traditional has two whorls. I've only ever used the larger one because I can adjust my treadling and drafting to get the yarn I want. But, I was wondering if you had any tips about changing whorls when you have a string drive band. My disinclination for cutting off drive bands to change whorls is really why I've never bothered to try.

Thank you for this video! I am just about to purchase my first wheel and trying to learn as much as I can beforehand. This was an excellent explanation of the whorls and ratios that helped me to understand it much better.

I have a Schact Sidekick and my whorls go even smaller. I’ve had it for years courtesy of my brother in law, who loves near where they are made

This is great. I just went through an explanation of this to a new spindlier and was hoping I was getting the comparison about ratios from a wheel to a spindle right. Thankful, this confirms all. I am sharing this with her right now. I am currently sampling an Alpaca blend for a sweater knit. Aside from dealing with a luster factor, this is the first I see the importance of how the twist in the single can effect the ply and the over all characteristics of the yarn. So I have been playing with ratios and sampling a bunch. As usual you have done an excellent job with this. Many thanks and lots of appreciation. Sending many warm and best wishes as you work through your health issues. j

Glad to see your smiling face and beautiful spinning again! Book reviews would be fantastic. I've read Worn and found it very interesting and thought provoking -- I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this book, and I'm interested in suggestions for other books about textile history.

I’m so grateful for this video! It made a whorl of difference 😂. Today I tried to spin fingering weight for the first time. Single kept breaking so I tried a faster whorl & that did the trick! Yay!

Really helpful. Can you elaborate on the impacts of different ‘grooves’ in the drive wheel such as the Ashford joy?

This was a very interesting and informative video podcast.
I'm glad that you explained about twist and speed on eSpinner working in a similar way to a Whorl on a Treadle Wheel.

I love this video! I watched a Margaret Stove video and she suggested if you break a single don’t stop the wheel abruptly, let it slowly stop on it’s own. That way the broken end is usually loosely sitting on top and easy to find. I’ve found that super helpful too.

Also i have serious pain issues with my period. have since I was a teenager. but one of the interesting indirect textile history things I would like to see you try is a video on the aral sea and the damage the soviet cotton industry did to it. That and the lowell mills as well as 'niche" fibers

I was led to incorrectly believe, treadling and ratio gave the thickness of yarn. Which didnt seem correct as each individual doesn't treadle at the same pace. So now I see why I never got the thickness of singles I wanted in order to have either fingering or DK equivalent plyed yarn. Though perfecting consistent even singles is still a learning curve.
