Richard thank you for taking the time to answer questions. I did have a question that I can't seam to understand. What does the correct stitch look like. I'm adjusting the tension on my machine to get what I think is a good stitch, but I'm not an expert
Hello Leo, For thread tension, I pull the top thread and bottom thread at the same time to feel the tension. They should be close to equal. When stitching you should not be able to see the bottom thread from the top. If one of the threads stiches look loose, just tighten up a little bit. I believe once you got it dialed in, you will never have to touch it again. I have not adjusted my thread tension for a few years. Please keep liking and watching!

I'm seriously considering having the seats upholstered with real leather. What should I ask or look for in a local (Texas, Rio Grande Valley) upholstery shop to give me confidence they do quality work?
Hello Rgetso, Thank you so much for your support! I really appreciate it. Oh, that would be funny! Xie' xie. First thing to do is Google "Upholstery shop near me" Then read their reviews staring with the one-stars first to find out why everyone hates them. Lastly ask a lot of questions. Hey Richard, I’m working on headliner and sun visors in my 91 Chevy truck. I have a question for the visors I’m using 1.5 mm chip board and headliner material for visors, what is the correct size thread for going through 2 layers of chip board and material. How is the thread measured. Thank You
Hello Jim, for 40 years, I never paid attention to thread size. I just always bought what was a standard size thread from my upholstery suppliers for industrial sewing machines. When I started making videos, I got the same questions and they made me look. It turns out to be T-90 thread. Please keep liking and watching!
Hi Richard, Have you done a video on replacing a bobbin mid project? I forgot to double check my bobbin, and ran out in the middle of a visible French seem. I just pulled my thread back to start and went back in the same needle holes, but is there an easier way without putting a lock stich in the middle of a stitch line? Thanks!
Hello Timeout, Usually what I do is remove the material from the sewing machine. Then turn it on it's back to show the bottom bobbin thread. Pull out a few stitches to make longer threads. Hand tie them in the back. When restarting your stitch, just put the needle in the last hole and go again. When finished, hand tie the loose thread on the backside, the same as before. Try it, you'll like it! Please keep liking and watching!
Hi Richard! Looking for advice. When doing a seat or cushion using scrim/sew foam, how do you handle the areas where a zipper is used. Seems really bulky if you fold over the foam and sew to the zipper. BTW, love the shirt!
Hello Watz, in 44 years, I cannot think of a time I had to do that. But I could imagine still getting it done, but like you say, it would be bulkier. You can always try! That is how we learn right? I bought that outfit on one of my trips to China about 25 years ago. Please keep liking and watching!
I always use the same glue gun set up you have. I recently got a pressure pot styled one. It sprays amazingly, but I noticed it can clog up pretty easily after sitting for one night. I think I have to empty the hose that carry’s the glue, and de-pressurize the pot before shutting down for the night. You ever use that type of system before? Did you have to purge the whole thing when not in use?
Hello Dusty, I used the pressure pot for a short time over 40 years ago. I went to the spray gun and never looked back! Try it, you'll like it! Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery yes, I do use the same spray gun you have. That's what I've been using for years. I tried the pressure pot for something new to try.
Hey Richard,,,What brushable adhesive do you recommend for the headliner material with the foam backing. A lot of adhesives I have looked at is not compatible with foam. I’m assuming the adhesive you are using comes in large quantities for your spray gun. I’m looking for quart cans or I may have to a gallon. Thank You
Hello Jim, Nice to meet you! Just grab a quart can of contact adhesive from the big box store. They use it for counter tops. It can be brushed or sprayed. Just don't let it soak into the foam. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Richard! Learning is doing! Pretty new at this, bought a Singer 155 couple years ago. I’m working on my air ride truck seats and the original covers have a rather dense, maybe Dacron, not sure, but it’s about 1/8” thick, glued to the back of the scrim foam and Velcro is attached to the foam cushions. To be more clear, the hook Velcro is glued to the seat cushion, and this material locks into it. Do you know what this material is called so I can purchase new? Thank you much!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks for the reply! It’s not the opposite piece of Velcro but a fibrous piece of material that is glued to the whole underside of the scrim foam. When I try to remove it to reuse it just wants to tear apart.

Hi Richard
My question is, How do you save and repair sear cushion from 1988 Toyota fj62 Land cruiser. The foam is very brittle if you rub your hands on it the foam turns into find crumbs like sand particles.
Hello Loren, I think you might find this video helpful ua-cam.com/video/N14VbKUdctk/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/dVJe-RbSz14/v-deo.html Give it a try! Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks for the two videos. Would the appropriate repair be to rub all the decayed foam off then glue scrim over the whole seat cushion?
@@lorenweatherby6520 Hello Loren, Yep, get rid of the old stuff for sure. Depending on what it needs, If that is the case, you could put scrim over or even some Dacron pad. Please keep liking and watching!
Do you have brand of premium scrim?
@@lorenweatherby6520 Hello Loren, I know of no brand name. I buy from an upholstery supplier. You will know the quality when you see it. Please keep liking and watching!
Richard: great at episode. Subscribed and liked.
Will be getting a machine so thanks for listing minimum requirements. Still want to get a juki but yours is a bit to much. Will check out lower models with required aspects.

Thanks for the videos Richard could you recommend a supplier for vinyl tops and does $120 a yard sound good. I found a supplier but he has mixed reviews.

Your Wuhan experience is fascinating! Now we need a short video of you speaking Mandarin (with English subtitles).
By the way, I recently bought a new Acura Integra with pleather-upholstered seats.
Their answers will or will not give you the confidence in them. I show my customers my website Rudolphsupholstery.com with 44 years of my work to give them the confidence that I can do the work.
Hi Richard
Hello DD, I can see you paid attention! I just hope you watched all the way through.

Hello Ponway, I am not sure as I usually reuse it. I would imagine it would be called a sewn on loop Velcro. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks for the reply!
It’s not the opposite piece of Velcro but a fibrous piece of material that is glued to the whole underside of the scrim foam. When I try to remove it to reuse it just wants to tear apart.
@@ponway Hello Ponway, Oh, sorry I thought you meant the strip of velcro material that is sewn in place of a listing. Darn it! Maybe try an upholstery supplier. Please keep liking and watching!
