    • @pivoteer556
      @pivoteer556 6 років тому +4

      Not exactly. A Major 6th and a dim 7 are the same interval.

    • @MarcinGuitar
      @MarcinGuitar 6 років тому +13

      Not true, they sound the same but in notation a Maj6th from C is A and a Dim7 is Bbb and that makes a difference when you take the harmony of the piece into account.

    • @pivoteer556
      @pivoteer556 6 років тому +19

      As someone who's about to wrap up his degree in composition and has studied under 4 different doctorates in this, all of them would advise against using B double flat, as it's just a really good way to confuse musicians, when A would have sufficed. It literally makes no difference in the sound, and the difference is just pedantic.

    • @MarcinGuitar
      @MarcinGuitar 6 років тому +8

      Fair enough. However in that case the usage of all double flats or double sharps becomes unnecessary so a question comes up: why do they even exist? If previously in the bar theres an A used (or Ab, A# for that matter) then reusing it right away with a natural would be confusing, so Bbb would be fine. If the melody would be i.e. C Ab Bbb C, and the Bbb being in the Cdim7 chord, then writing it as A makes even less sense. And also we should not forget about the way we build chords with 3rds, a minor third from Gb as you know is Bbb not A, and even though it is kinda pedantic I think this rule should be preserved because it makes logical sense. This whole problem is basically insignificant when it comes to actually writing music, but I guess it's a fun topic anyway. Cheers!

    • @Fanchen
      @Fanchen 6 років тому +3

      doing so would result with improper spelling, and voice leading would look awkward as well. Bbb should lead to Ab if vii°7-I in key of Db, as the 7th should fall. Writing in A natural would imply the rising direction.
