my hero. I mainly write in seconds and sevenths because I love those intervals so much and when I feel like I"m using too many seconds and/or sevenths, I will abuse the tritone because I also love tritones.
Rachel Emery so I'm playing a bunch of Don Ellis charts in a big band and one of the fucking things is in 33/16 FOR SOME FUCKING REASON. Not to mention some of the charts have time signatures like (5+2)/4 + 3/8, because of course they do. And of course they notate the hypermeasures wrong, so instead of 3 bars of 5/4, 2/4, and 3/8 separated by dashed barlines (with solid barlines between each hypermeasure), they put solid barlines between everything because confusing everyone who has to count rests is fun.

I also find a bunch of things in your music notation videos incredibly relatable as I play a couple of different instruments. Keep up the awesome work!
How about when they tie two eighth notes together instead of just using a quarter note. Why? Or when they tie a dotted quarter note and an eighth note together. Like why do they do that?
It's to help the reader understand the rhythm on off-beats. An eighth tied to an eighth on an off-beat is a lot prettier in my opinion than a quarter note in its place.

In swing music, tied eighth notes are played detached, so two eighth notes tied together is actually shorter than a quarter note, and a dotted quarter tied to an eighth is actually shorter than a half note.
Julian Cianciolo Don’t they also show dynamic change and tempo change? As in, during the tie is when you change dynamics, rather than crescendoing or decrescendoing uniformly. And similar with rit and accel? Or am I just reading wayyy too far into the patterns I see lol

Same! It was towards the end of eighth grade, and I’m a sophomore in high school, now, but I can still quote that video from memory. That video did kind of piss off the trombone section, though. If you’ve seen that video, you know which part I’m talking about
Same. I despise that song, but I'd be far more receptive listening to it in a jazz cover rather that the infuriatingly dull, dead, manufactured pop original.
Man, now I really want jazz band to start, but it doesn’t start until like December. That’s mainly because (at my school) jazz band is an after school thing, and guess what other band thing is after school? Yep, it’s marching band (which I’m in, and love), but it means the band director can’t do any other stuff after school until after marching band season is over, so I’m kinda sad. But at the same time, I love marching band, so it’s alright that I have to wait
Noah R. T. Has your band teacher ever taught jazz band as a zero hour? That's how it works in my school district, and it usually works pretty well. You don't have to schedule around sports as much, and you guys would be able to do jazz and marching band at the same time.

Very accurate description of the font. So true

My friend actually did this for a competition. He won and edmonton's main orchestra got to play his song live for around a year. Awesome stuff.
Use plenty of diminished 7th chords, where you ignore what is called a 7th and add the major 6th instead. Double tritone!

a weird time signature like 22/8?
Rachel Emery so I'm playing a bunch of Don Ellis charts in a big band and one of the fucking things is in 33/16 FOR SOME FUCKING REASON.
Not to mention some of the charts have time signatures like (5+2)/4 + 3/8, because of course they do. Havok the song "whiplash" is in 14/8 time
Connor McCabe Most of Whiplash is just an easy 7/4. The 14/8 is just the ensemble soli towards the end.
Rachel Emery Bad Boss Boogie from the soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country is in 29/8 time, and it isn't even jazz.
Love me some First Circle!
I love the way you put the blur effect on when the chords play

I was the one to write them for this one!
That was really funny, good job.
