      Always thought it was nuts not to install a small minimum warp 3 wap drive somehow into the saucer section. If your in the middle of nowhere and communications go out and the star drive got destroyed about 2 or 3 light years away as it flew back to fight an enemy. You might as well become a generational saucer section as it takes you maybe 50 to 100 years to fky to the next communications relay or class M Planet.

    It looks cool and everything, but from an engineering standpoint it would be really challenging (and expensive) to design such a ship, with separate power systems, two main computers, separate propulsion etc. Also there would be two "decks" that aren't useable since you basically have to travel through the hull to get to the other section.

    • @alexgataric
      @alexgataric Рік тому

      But also very useful as we've seen the two halves operate effectively in combat and as a life raft. They effectively created two ships and combined them. I only wish they did it more like in the 1st season episode when LaForge was in command. It makes sense to leave the civilians on the saucer and take the star drive section into combat or high risk situations.

    Interesting fact. The Sovereign-Class was designed with Saucer Separation in mind. We never got to see it sadly.

      To be honest, I've never been a fan of that class of ship having seperation abilities. I think that part of it is that it feels not necessary. The main issue, however, is what I would consider a design flaw. The drive section doesn't have impulse engines. If that ship class seperates, the drive section would be stuck with manuvering thrusters or would only be able to go to warp. Not the best idea in my opinion.

    • @simonpreston
      @simonpreston 3 роки тому

      Even the 'original' TOS Enterprise had saucer separation. Whilst it was never seen, on screen, Kirk mentions it in the episode 'The Apple':
      "Tie every ounce of power the ship has into the impulse engines. Discard the warp drive nacelles if you have to, and crack out of there with the main section, but get that ship out of there!"
      Although it'd be a permanent thing; not able to reattach, once done. So it seems plausible that saucer separation is a feature built in to most starships; particularly ones with the standard saucer + engineering hull sections. May be a bit pointless for ships such as the Miranda class. But they, too, may still be able to jettison the nacelles, if required.

Enterprise NCC-1701-D and as Riker said 'She went before her time' and sadly that was true as the life expectancy of the Galaxy Class was 100 years and the Enterprise D was in service for only 8 years who followed the destruction of her sister ship the U.S.S. When they pulled the original model out again for the Borg fight the prop crew almost broke it and swore never to use it again, until they had to for Generations because the newer model was too small to look good on a film screen.

    If only they were able to install secondary phaser banks at the "top" of the engineering section.
    Maybe then... non-essential crew, families, and civilians could be kept safe during all combat situations but the unexpected ones and the Enterprise would not lose half its phaser banks from a saucer separation.
    Gives me an idea though.
    What if a Galaxy Class Starship had a saucer separation... but then the two halves of the ship were ironically and indefinitely lost to one another and unable to return to Starfleet, forcing both vessels to made due... the crew of the saucer section having to build their own warp engines and both crews having to construct new weapons.
    If not that, it could become a sort of experiment for Starfleet's starship designers.

    Was that first separation at warp? I can understand the saucer remaining at warp whilst close to the rest of the ship as it would still be within the warp field, however, once far enough apart it would no longer be within the field. The saucer section doesn't have a warp drive and no longer being in the warp field means they couldn't maintain warp even if they had remaining enertia. Did they mention anything about this in the episode? It feels like the writers might not have thought this through, but given its the first episode, I guess the future episodes were the ones that didn't look back.

That was actually supposed to be a close up shot of them getting destroyed but the "Battle head" filming model ie: the one shown at 0:09 which is just a giant version of the "neck" of the ship with the latches that retract out of it was in too bad a shape by the time Generations rolled around, since they only had used it the one time and it sat unused for 7 years.

    I have an idea to re-write Generations, though I’m sure someone has already thought of this and I don’t know. The star drive still explodes, but Data and Troi achieve standard orbit around the planet. Starfleet still has to come rescue them and because of damage the saucer took it’s decommissioned and put in a museum. The crew is then assigned to a Sovereign class ship named the E-E so that the flagship remains a top of the line ship (by happy coincidence). During a future feature film, the E-E could fly by the E-D saucer to please some fans.
    I think fans would be happier with this outcome and the executives still get their new ship.

    It's always the same shot that ILM recorded at the beginning of the first season as stock footage. It is also a shame that there was no seperation in the later seasons. The whole concept wasnt well thought out. You can see that e.g. At Voyager much better, where it is that it can seperate in three parts and then attack with all three parts at the same time, that makes more sense, i.e. the separation with the Enterprise D. It is also a shame that the bridge was no longer used in the later seasons. This is mainly due to the fact that the battle bridge was later always redesigned and became the Alien Ship of the Week or the Alien Bridge of the week.
    you remember in which room Captain Picard landed as Borg on the Enterprise? This is the same room where Data created his daughter. And that was the battle bridge. It was simply redesigned and it was done so well that no one did even realize that it was the battle Bridge, but that it looked as if it was a completely new room.
