Surprising number of performances of this on UA-cam, but this one is the gold standard. Kaljuste is charismatic, a shaman; the lean ensemble is terrific and they creates a spine-tingling sense of overhearing an ancient rite. Raw, earthy, not a hint of prettiness.
Wie unglaublich gut ist das denn! Vielen Dank, Tõnju Kaljuste dass Sie den Nederlands Kamerkoor hierfür so grandios inspiriert haben! Thank You so much everybody for this great experience which is now shared with everybody on You tube... what a richness of life You give to everyone that finds You!
this conductor is bloody fantastic. It's one thing to watch. But knowing what it's like to be emotionally trusting and following a conductor... He would make me perform my absolute finest.
I seldom use crude expletives, but this is truly fucking excellent. The shrieking lamentations after 6:20 are things of awe. Magnificent performance, many thanks for this, M X
Partial translation: Ohoy villain! Wretched iron! Scoundrel, how did you get power? I know your birth, you purblind fool! Once there walked three nature spirits, they milked ther swelling breasts to earth Ohoy villain! Wretched iron! Then you were not high and mighty, when you sloshed in swamps and marshes, I know your birth, you purblind fool! A wolf then ran across the fen, And there sprouted iron seedlings, in the traces of the wolf's claws, Ohoy iron! Child of boghole! Tell me, who made you so baleful? Death was riding through the marshes, Seedling steel it found in swampland, The great death then began to talk In a pine grove on a hillside Right here will be the forge of death, Here I start to boil the iron, Then you were not high and mighty moaning in the white hot furnace Droned the old man on the oven, Iron stretches, spreads like blubber oozing from the blazing furnace, Iron you're still soft and gently, How have you yet to be tempered Get the spitter from an adder, For iron wouldn't harbor evil without spittle from the serpent .....
Where’s Gandalf? Seriously, this is so primal...such a stellar piece! Veljo Tormis had deep insight into the human psyche. And that conductor is in another world!
This piece, and in particular this performance under the great Tonu Kaljuste (one of the closest friends and greatest ambassadors of the even greater Veljo Tormis) should be banned by all churches in the world for its blatant paganism ... A greater compliment than this simply does not occur to me ...
always someone fucking coughing in the background of every live performance. this is an excellent performance, but the one person who always decides to show up to live performances with pneumonia always bugs me.

if the singers would perform this without notes and connected with Kaljuste ... the pulse would be fabulous more earthy (dance ceremony)... great koor

This and Forgotten Peoples... what a singularly spectacular composer Veljo Tormis was. Kaljuste and crew are spectacular here!
Fantastisch, adembenemend, spannend, intrigerend, voor mij een ontdekking!
Rest in peace great Veljo Tormis

Such stunning composition paired with a superb performance!! Bravo!
Just saw this performed live by the State Choir of Latvia (here in Ottawa for a performance) It was hair-raisingly thrilling! Had to listen again...

This version sounds alot like Ligeti's Requiem with the growly low parts
Dwarves forging Angrist.

Hysterische en aanstellerige muziek. Hoe knap ook gedaan.

Never was a fan of Kaljuste, too much ego. I preferred Gronostay and Ericson.
