    As a weekend golfer in Korea, I was so glad to see my home country in the video. Golf is more than a sport nowadays in Korea. It’s more of a fashion I would say. Playing golf has always been a bit pricey, and many people consider it as one of the luxurious sports in Korea. But with the recent Covid, things got even worse. With ever-increasing demand of new golfers (mostly coming from those golf sims or screen golf), all the golf courses increased the green fees like crazy. It usually cost me about $250 just for the green fees on the weekend. And it is mandatory to hire a caddie which costs me another $30˜40 ($150 split by 4), and golf cart is a must too, and this costs me another$25 ($100 split by 4). I ususally end up spending $300 for a round of 18 holes. I would say many people are forced to play at those screen golf instead of actual outdoor golf. It is kida sad if you think about it.

      thank you for the added context. Would you say it's bc there is a lack of golf courses in Korea? I've just kind of viewed the golf boom in Korea from afar and noticed it's treated as more of an aesthetic for most people (like the celebrities) to show they have money lol.

      Damn, here I was thinking my $750USD yearly membership was a rip off

    • @thatsballer
      @thatsballer Рік тому +6

      @@PTdoubleOT not Korean, but it's really just the expense to play at a regular course in countries such as Korea and Japan. I used to live in Thailand, and regularly played in other SE Asia countries, and golf tourism from Korean and Japanese golfers is huge. It felt like 75% of golfers you'd see out on course in SE Asia would be Korean or Japanese tourists. I asked a few different groups and they say it's far better value for them to fly over, pay for accommodation/food and their green fees than to play in their home country.
      I'd say similar to why a party goer would fly to Cancun to drink and party over staying in their hometown. Far better value for money.
      You are also correct in a way in terms of being a country club member in Asia being a status thing. Status is huge in Asia, and being able to say you're a member of a prestigious club is a big thing. I have an uncle who is a member of a 50k a year golf club in Asia, and he plays a handful of times a year. The rest of the time it is entertaining/showing off to his clients/friends.

      I’m also from Korea, and he’s not exaggerating at all. Most of the golfers in Korea would prefer to play on a real golf course, but it’s too expensive now and even with the money it’s almost impossible to book your tee time.

    • @pinballee
      @pinballee Рік тому +8

      @@PTdoubleOT I won’t say there is a lack of golf courses in Korea. There are more than 20 million population living in metropolitan area around Seoul and there are plenty of golf courses around those areas. I think there are just way too many people who are wanting to be part of this trend now. I am fortunate enough to afford to play actual outoodr golf twice a week but playing at screen golf just doesn’t work for me.
      I dont even remember when was the last time I played at those screen golf. It is kinda stupid but fact that there are some people who are wanting to show off that they have money. So I think this is sorta like a bubble that will be go down in a few years.

    As a Korean American, I’m shocked none of the interviewees on the show did not mention why screen golf is taking off is not because Koreans prefer screen golf it’s the fact that real golf is rather super expensive and very exclusive for the rich!! Also it’s hard to expand and create more real golf unlike Vietnam because of the real estate cost and how small the country is.
    Funny how they didn’t want to share that info.
    My aunt who is wealthy for her membership has to pay over 200k in initiation fee and still has to pay for each round to play and they must find a 4some and a forecaddie at all times.
    The interviewees clearly know the exclusivity and cost of golf in Korea but rather be disingenuous and promote their screen golf brand because it’s no secret that Koreans would much rather play real golf than hit into a screen
    Side note, Eric we love all your content including Random Golf Club!

You can get some pizza or noodles and have some soju. It's a blast. Sims also have an assist mode so you can play if you're not so good. But it's great fun. Funny how these are just taking off where I'm from.

    There's a lot of benefits to "screen" golf, especially for the beginner. You will always find your ball instantly and never lose a ball (that's a big one). The time the play 9 or 18 is significantly less. You can play courses all over the world you may never get the opportunity to play at the actual course. You can play more golf in a given amount of time than playing outside, etc. Now, with that said, although I love my simulator nothing beats playing outside. If your goal is to be better at golf you have to play outside. Different lies, grasses, etc. that you just can't simulate. With winter approaching here, I will be playing lots of "screen" golf.

    Screen golf is getting traction here in Canada recently. Many new locations are popping up, but the cost is quite a bit higher at around $18-$45 per hour. The lower spectrum of the price range is due to the places not being occupied with any staff. You book online, get a virtual key via email or an app. Then you enter at your designated time and play.

Average cost is about 250USD per person for 18 hole, maybe including dinner as well. Part of the reason for the high cost ironically comes from the so called phenomenon. I lived in Shanghai and they had a couple of GolfZon’s in the Koreatown part of the city. Absolutely was my go to when I needed my golf fix as it was honestly about 5-10 times more affordable and convenient than playing on a course

    A minimum green fee of $250 + $100 cart fee(split by 4 so $25 pp) + $120 caddy fee($30 pp and mandatory to hire caddy) so a total of $300 minimum per round + gas/tolls to get to the cc.

    I get the attraction and convenience factors but being in nature is the healing part.
    I understand golf on a course is not available to many especially in the East but for me it's the adventure, the ritual and nature.
    Thanks for an interesting episode.

    golf in Korea is wildly expensive, this is a great alternative. America adopted top golf and I think this would be a great market too.
