Ultrakill is a first-person shooter video game developed by Arsi "Hakita" Patala and published by New Blood Interactive. It was released through Early Access on Steam for Microsoft Windows on September 3, 2020.

It is the best of the worst
You can double tap tab during gameplay to bring up stats that include a variety of information about your current performance in a level including whether or not you completed or failed its challenge.
Never again will you have to reach the end of a level only to see you failed the challenge.

Water in Ultrakill is just low gravity mode. Well, there's a few more things, like how it affects nails and coins, but it's pretty minor stuff. What matters is that it doesn't really hinder your movement. I love that it allows you to rocket ride for much longer. And I love that it let's you use the whiplash without getting hard damage. It was a smart move to put this level right after getting the whiplash. My one complaint is the muffled audio, since Deep Blue is one of the best tracks in the game.

i don't agreee with you on the muffled music thing. the moments when you fly over the water and the music swells and you get this powerful feeling, damn. i personally loved having the water, it made the music even harder for me.
@@bruh_original I would agree if the audio limiter had less attack and more release, you get some nasty distortion artifacts from the lowpass. If anything, lowering the volume by like 2 or 3db whenever you enter water would've fixed that but it is what it is hahaha. I absolutely love the water levels
I love the water because it ENHANCES your capabilities to do cool stuff, not limits them. It adds new POSSIBILITES to what you can do
Also wow i see you complaining the moment more than 1 difficult enemy is in a room lol
i mean, the low gravity is kind fo annoying tbh, i feel that it still limits your capabilities
how the fuck does it add new possibilities? what other cool tech is only possible underwater? yeah there's a few things that are adjusted accordingly but it still ruins the flow imo

What I love about this stage is that it takes place immediately after you get the Whiplash. Since the whiplash doesn't deal hard damage in water, it allows new players to get accustomed to it without the hard damage penalty.

honestly that room where you have to fight all the sentry's i find to be a bit to easy seeing that they are stationary enemy's that need line of sight to deal damage. all u gotta do is bait em to a corner and set up a railcoin and it usually kills if you land it. if not then a charge shot from the revolver will finish it off
even with no cover tho you just whiplash them and slam or punch and it's done, cause no one's stopping there and hitting the antenna
i def agree, but they are still a threat if you get distracted by the other enemies, as i don’t think they miss a shot

Well yea it’s not meant to be hard they introduce the enemy then play around with it then and then in later levels put it somewhere where it could be a actual threat (like 6-1)
This level really made me realize just how important the ground pound is for the game's movement, it allows you to stop drifting in the air like you usually do and quickly get back up into the air if you jump quickly after hitting the ground
It also allows for slam storage and high speed if you slide jump right after landing from a ground pound.

@@cenfre2866 you don't really need it if you just keep jumping and sliding around, and not using the same weapon all the time.
Also, using slam storage in small spaces usually isn't useful, and there are rarely big open spaces.

A tip, if you press tab twice a small icon on the top left corner of your screen should appear, which shows you your current style for the level and if you're doing the challenge correctly. If you did touch any water and didn't realize it, it will tell you right away, so you don't have to complete the whole level to see if you did the challenge correctly.
i like how the video is about you absolutely shitting on the water parts and the reason it's good is because you have to avoid the water
Ori and the WOTW also did their water level really well, mainly because:
- It lets you go pretty fast
- how pretty the visuals look completely distract you from the fact that you're playing a water level.

I really didn’t enjoy 5-1 the first time I played it, but every time I play it, I enjoy it more. Knowing that rockets and whiplash are massively buffed underwater really helps
The challenge being "Don't touch water" is the most savage thing to put in a water level.
What I like to do for the sniper bots with legs, if you stick 'em with nails and fire a nailmagnet into the wall it actually pulls enemies with low mass into it. This effectively puts them out of combat for a good period of time!
Man I hate it when video game levels have enemies in them.
that’s what most of the first half of the review is “can we have a chill moment?”? you’re playing ultrakill, there are no chill moments, that’s why you’re playing this game. the complaints are so stupid

I would highly recommend a more moderate use of the whiplash, as using it causes you to take hard damage which is a big no bueno. Also I would recommend getting the secret slab revolver upgrade, its very fun and in most cases the charge-shot slab is better than the basic version, but stick with the normal revolver for coin.
To be fair you don't take hard damage from the whiplash underwater

So Im actually gonna point out something about the water in both states of 5-1.
As the tip shows, the submerged version does show off the fact your whiplash doesn't have major drawback of dealing hard damage, which is only really negated at high style meters normally. Giving all your fun movement options even more use and prominence. But also to note the water does effect other gameplay mechanics such as projectile trajectories and how blood moves.
Then in the drained version of the level it actually can enforce some of the more obscure mechanics in your grounded movement. The most common one people dont seem to know enough is that the slide can skip across the water. So in that 2x Cerb + MFace room , you can actually use the slide to pinball around the arena bouncing on the surface. The same thing at the end of the level to bounce around that part to abuse some of the lower cover from the sentries while getting shots off.
Honestly the water level in ultrakill felt pretty normal

On levels you've already beaten, you can press tab to see performance stats during the level, including whether or not you've failed the challenge. Helps a lot with the 'don't touch water' challenges.
only complaint abt the challenge is if you touch water you have to redo the entire level, going back to the checkpoint doesn’t save you

Anyone noticed that in 0:37 it says that you're entering 5-2 but when the door opens you're in 5-1?
My least favorite part about layer 5 is that In the Wake of Poseidon wasn't longer. Act 2 is full of such great standout moments but 5-1 has something in it that I just think is so amazing
Also not enough hook points IMO. Like the boost hook appeared 3 times in total in both Wrath + Heresy and it's not even in a combat arena 2 out of 3.

Counterpoint: the modern Rayman water themed worlds are still the absolute best across all genres. Water movement almost feels better than regular movement. It’s crazy.

The drones are called sentry’s, I love them.
this is the only instance that i've find where the water would change the gameplay completely rather than just slow it down, unlike other games with these levels slowing down ur movement, for ultrakill it just changes how it works since it's blissed with the fact that u have total control over v1
but it did slow down for me cos i have a bad pc sooo :p

bro this was the first water level i like in a game
The annoying part about 5-1 isn’t the water, but the fact that the no water challenge doesn’t reset at a checkpoint. You touch a single drop? Back to the start of the level for you. The right path is almost impossible to maneuver in with almost no land and the left path has enemies in the water you just have to peck at. They’re Maurice’s so explosions don’t work and nails go funky in water so the only real solution is spamming pistol and rail gun. And of course, the final rooms secretly having water at the very end. I sure am glad Hakita didn’t reuse this challenge for another even longer level that only gets water halfway through with multiple tight jumps and a required secret path that you can’t use the checkpoints in cause the challenge doesn’t reset
Tip for the right room during this challenge: Hug the center cage where the skull is trapped, this way it's harder to get knocked around.

Nevermind, next, spam slab charge on cerberuses and use overheat nailgun on them between charge pistol cooldowns. Use railgun if it finishes recharge.

This is the only water level that isn't heavy for me, the game's mechanics combine so well with water

Horizon Forbidden West's underwater level (VEGAS) was, well it was fucking BREATHTAKING. Immensely unbelievable, extremely cool, etc etc. The underwater cauldron though? That was horrifying. Extremely cool too though

Like m4rcyonstation points out in their own comment, Ultrakill's water is like the inverse of other games' water. Rather than limiting you, it actually makes you more powerful.
1. You jump higher and descend more slowly. While this might actually be a detriment in some games, Ultrakill gives you so much control in the air that it is pretty much a non-issue.
2. Blood from enemies lingers for much longer than in air. Obviously, this makes healing easier.
3. This is probably the most minor enhancement, but you do not weigh down rockets when you ride them underwater.
4. The whiplash causes no hard damage underwater. On top of jumps being floatier, this means movement is an absolute breeze in water.
0:35 how come it shows the level as 5-2
Majora's mask (N64) also has a cool water level, sure, you don't have your standard arsenal, BUT you have entirely new abilities related to the Zora's mask, it's really cool because it doesn't slow you down on a game where time is of the essence, it actually speeds you up, I never really liked or hated water levels, I just wished more ganes would make those stages meaningful in some way and not treat it like a checklist, I mean, WHY THE FUCK WOULD DMC 1 NEED A WATER LEVEL?!?!
