    Thank you! I painted my bedroom (envelope) in one color and it looks and feels fine. Besides having to use smaller nighstands. I believe the declutterings of things seen and unseen certainly affects the aesthetics. Still working on decluttering books, magazines, etc. I like your humor, and it makes seeing your videos a pleasure.

    I can see one small problem with an area rug that too closely matches the floor color. As one gets older, and one's vision gets worse, it gets harder to distinguish between the rug and the floor. And the rug can become a trip hazard.

  • @philippapay4352
    @philippapay4352 Рік тому +26

    Thank you for showing even dark small spaces and how they can look so much larger when the entire "envelope" is the same color. Great examples. It helps us visualize. Saw something I actually may consider getting. Back in the day, before furniture makers got serious about people living in small homes (even old city rowhouses), I know folks who went to boat supply places that sold furniture and other household items for houseboats (and later motor homes), so they'd have smaller things at home, leaving space for people. NOW YOU MUST ADDRESS why folks in suburbia often have small dogs and city dwellers, big ones!

    • @squalloogal
      @squalloogal Рік тому +3

      The dogs, lol, so true. Massive dogs in tiny homes…I don’t get it.

    • @AshCupric
      @AshCupric Рік тому +4

      That’s a brilliant idea about looking for houseboat/ RV furniture. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @MECopas
      @MECopas Рік тому

      @@squalloogal Big dogs make sense when there is a security aspect. City dwellers with big dogs like big dogs, and also like feeling safe. Small dogs - often less "play" time, or more restricted areas inside the house; little or no security concerns except barking. Many suburban folks like their labradors and Retrievers/setters as they are good family dogs and good with kids when properly socialized. Women with purse dogs? Sigh. I guess a replacement for kids.

    That’s some really cool ideas to even use for like my house I have 7-8 rooms that make up my home none of them are large. It’s an older home so they weren’t made to have big bedrooms, so I have problems with the scale of what furniture is today and the size of my rooms they begin to feel crowded and cluttered, so these were some really good ideas that I could implement! The fact that you just solidified the fact of my one color walls floors ceilings well I’m already doing that because for me it made my room look bigger so I’m glad I’m doing something right lol! Thanks Lisa for always giving us tips and tricks!

    You are right about monochromatic making space seem larger. I just moved into a 2 bed, 1 bath 964 sq. ft. condo. I love color and have antiques. I have dark laminate floors and popcorn ceiling. I'm not painting the walls to match dark laminate or popcorn. I chose an off white blue in eggshell that picks up blue greys in my rose and green antique couch and chairs. I did paint doors and trim same color in semi-gloss. Love it! I will live with my living room looking smaller, with too much furniture and maximalist decor. You have to go with what you love. Also the sliding glass door in the living room facing the green space beyond opens it somewhat. Everyone who has come in seems genuinely wowed. Follow your passion, folks.

      I totally agree with you I live in a 500 ft² apartment and I have big antiques and a big couch the thing is you can put big furniture in a place the thing is don't put too much of it so smaller furniture can make small spaces look even smaller and I do not choose to live in a white Box either

Will be painting everything white, and will use a 120 inch sofa, and an accent chair. I will skip the rug. Creating a 4 x 5 textured art canvas. Before purchasing the furniture I will map it out with painters tape on the floor.This channel is very helpful, and you are a design genius!

    We live in a 1939 small house of 1000sqft with 8 ft ceilings. I have paint d all the walls, ceiling, trim and kitchen & bath cabinets the same color- it has really opened it up. Our old dark oak and walnut furniture pops against the SW Alabaster- I also added natural color linen curtains with matchstick blinds (due to cost of curtains I have “dummy” panels that don’t close all the way so the blinds help with light control) but I fail with the area rugs on our medium pecan stained wood floors- they have color and movement more on the new “vintage” style. I don’t have a lot of art or pictures on our walls or lots of tchotchkes but more curated things through our 40 years of marriage- we are not collectors, maximalists or even minimalists- we just keep everything simple with a few things we love not what’s trendy- except for plants- we love live greenery so several plants in each room and our outside garden is coming along very well. What Lisa is recommending is perfect for small spaces because it works for us and people are surprised how large our rooms look though the largest is our 15x16 entry/living room (the 2 bedrooms are 11x13 and 11x14, the bath is 5x7, the eat in kitchen is 11x14).

    Q- cluster of hats vs. gallery wall: Do the hats work, because they are all the same or is it the spacing? I have several paintings that are like 16*20/ 11*14, could it work if they are all super close together? They are gallery wrapped, but distinct pieces (not abstract or triptych).

    • @LisaHoltDesign
      @LisaHoltDesign  Рік тому +5

      Not only are they super close together, but they are the same value chromatically… Lay it out first on the floor and see if it will work

      @@LisaHoltDesign - Thank you, Lisa. I used to work in a frame shop, and learned a lot from the various designers using our business to help them design/decorate their customers' homes. One thing I learned is that framing & matting a number of pieces with the same color values & materials (e.g. black & white family photos from the 40's all matted with white and framed with thin pale gray frames) could create a cohesive visual unit if hung closely & precisely, e.g. three by three to create a single visual unit out of nine antique photos. This also works with smaller canvases created for the purpose (e.g. all painted the same general shades of layered blues with various cloud formations on them.) This works while you're saving up for that enormous artwork by your favorite artist that is six feet tall and framed in a gilt frame from the late 1800's -- available at auction for thousands. Ulp.

    Thanks for your inspiration to how to deal with small spaces. I have an open floor plan cottage with vaulted ceilings in pine tongue and groove. Do I pick a wall color that’s close to the wood color or would it be fine to paint the walls an off-white? I picked out an off-white but your video makes me think.

    I feel like my pet peeve with small spaces is when people try to make them look bigger. *Bigger. Is. Not. Always. Better.* Small spaces offer opportunities that larger ones don't. You can do super luxe things that would be crazy crazy stupid expensive on a larger scale. Think De Gournay-esque wallpaper for an accent wall. Think a super exquisite designer light fixture. You get a TON of bang for your buck, since you can buy something smaller and have it read as more dramatic. You can use super, super strong colors that might read as monolithic in a larger space. You can play with proportions in really interesting ways that just look silly in larger spaces. There are so many gorgeous things you can do with tiny spaces, and people waste them by painting them white and throwing in tiny furniture.
    I hate when people have small spaces and want them to look light and airy. That's like decorating a farmhouse to look like a Georgian manor. If your space is small, lean hard into the coziness. Paint it a strong color. Introduce really tactile elements like velvets. Go luxe as hell on the finishing. Splurge on a really beautiful rug that's the right scale. Layer your lighting. Those beautiful pools of light and shadow on the walls will blur out the corners, and make the space look bigger without taking away from the coziness. You can do large scale furniture in a small space. You just have to make it a focal point. You can do an enormous dramatic sofa. You just have to keep everything else delicate, and the sofa has to be worth the visual weight. (It needs to be damn interesting.)
    The cardinal rule of good taste is "nothing that pretends to be something else." (Meaning, if you can't afford marble, don't do vinyl that looks like marble. Pick an interesting vinyl that embraces the qualities of vinyl.) I feel like that rule goes for the size of spaces too. Embrace the size of your space. If you have a palatial dining room, don't try to chop it up into lots of cozy little nooks. If you have a small space, embrace the fuck out of it.

    One way to achieve that "giant art wall" feeling without spending thousands is to create either a triptych (three tall, vertical pieces of identical-height art set closely side by side) or even nine smaller pieces of art hung close together (three by three.) The secret is that the art either needs to be unframed canvas or else all pieces framed/matted in the exact same material (preferably something that will visually "disappear" into the art) in order to make the collection appear to be ONE visual unit. This can also be achieved with mirrors framed in silver chrome. Hang nine 2 x 2 foot mirrors framed in silver chrome nearly touching each other, and you'll have a 6 x 6 mirror effect.

    • @Bunny-ch2ul

      I feel like people get hung up on their "art" being "art." If it's fairly flat, you can frame it. Fabric, wallpaper, maps, pictures from books, clothing, etc. etc. etc. All of the above will look better than "paintings" from stores like HomeGoods. I feel like people also wildly underestimate the importance of mats. A dramatic mat always looks better. I won't do mats that are less than 2.5 inches wide, unless I'm hanging a grouping. If a 2.5+ inch mat would look silly, the article in question is too small to put on a wall, and belongs on a shelf, unless it's part of a grouping. Same goes for framing. You can pick up a passable oil painting at a street fair, and boldly framed it can look really interesting. Go nuts.
