I love this..but it's killing me a bit for this reason: my Mom is in care now and we are figuring out where her furniture will go. I love her vintage mid-century modern [Danish Modern teak] pieces but they don't line up with my more elegant rustic style. Killing me to have them sold as my siblings don't want them..both because they're beautiful and simple..they share that with rustic..but ..as you've pointed out, Lisa, they probably won't fit. The only thing I might be able to do is put teak table and 6 chairs in the new 3 season room I'm getting built soon, as it's going to be all white, darker floor. My interior in the main areas of the house are gyproced and not extremely rustic except for a couple large beams in the ceiling, deep window sills [telltale of log construction] and heavy, wide, plain woodwork. I'm planning to paint walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same colour, different sheens, so that makes it less rustic I guess. And I'm going to open the space between kitchen and lvrm by knocking out a stub wall except for load bearing posts, so ..a more open concept feel..and more contemporary. Still, Danish Modern pieces might feel out of place. I know.☺This is a situation for The Dezign Club..but I have to figure this out faster than September 10. I will. 🙂

You wouldn't believe what I did as a backsplash. Kitchen is white cabniits with dark wood floor, light beige walls, chrome hardware. I put wallpaper on backsplash that looks like tin ceiling tiles. Painted it silver,; added a bunch of glitter paint. So it catches the light. Countertops are beige with multi specks acrylic. It's in a 100+ year old farmhouse. I love it!

Okay, I’m done. I’ve decided that my space is Alpine Cottage?? Is that a thing? I thought I was Alpine Transitional Cottage but in a previous video you mentioned that we cannot we three different styles. Two is the max. I’m stuck with Alpine (which I don’t mind) but my heart belongs to Cottage. I also noticed that in Swedish cottages they incorporate lots of bead-board and board and batten.
We need a new stove this year, what type of gas stove is the best for the value/money/resale? Or should I just have a gas stove top and two wall ovens? So many options. I’ll have to see if you have an oven episode yet.
Great video!! Thank you for your time! You are always enjoyable!

My tiny house looks much more spacious with the same flooring throughout. I was worried about putting it in the kitchen, but there is no problem with it after seven years. I had three coats of satin oil-based finish put on, it’s virtually waterproof. I just make sure I don’t leave standing water on it, if I get really splashy when doing dishes. I’m so glad I chose this option, putting in different flooring would really have visually chopped up the kitchen and adjacent breakfast room. (For some reason, this Victorian cottage never had finished flooring, it was just very rough, widely-spaced planks, with generations of linoleum, then vinyl, so I put in solid red oak, as I saw in other original floors from this time. I liked the “amberized” color of the 120-year old oak I saw, so I had it stained to match, it’s beautiful, and, I think, looks very original).

Especially small kitchens or lack of storage kitchens, and for convenience sake, install a pot rack in the ceiling. I chose a stainless steel oval shaped one to hang above my island/peninsula to store (and show off) my stainless steel pots and tools. It is chandelier-like and makes for easy access to pots and cooking tools; it negates all that scrambling thru cupboards for pots, and eases up on storage. Plus IKEA sells a handy wall-mounted pot lid holder.
Also I detest sinks and cooktops in kitchen islands, which often serve as a work surface, dining area and gathering place. Keep the cooking mess away from here on the perimeter / back counter tops. Get over it if you think you need to be putting on a cooking show for your guests at your centre island.

  • @emilymayer5500

hahahaha, you would hate my kitchen. I love it. I live in a circa 1895 Victorian era cottage and my cabinetry is either original, original modified, or recycled from an old drug store cabinet. The original owner was a drug store owner, and the second owners were an oral surgeon and nurse who loved to pinch pennies. My sink is an enameled cast iron "farmhouse" one that has the drain board to the left. My cookstove is a circa late 1940s/early 1950s Magic Chef gas model. I had reproduction bead board added as wainscot, most of which is topped with a grooved shelf for displaying antiques and collectibles. The doors are all period pieces added to the home after I bought it (the home was remodeled in the 1950s in the streamline style of the time, it didn't fit for the most part so most of it has been replaced with period or period appropriate pieces or reproductions), and the streamlined woodwork around the door frames were replaced with period trims and woodwork salvaged from other historic homes in my hometown that were scheduled for demolition. The floor is wood laminate; I did not choose that floor, so come time to replace it, I'm looking at authentic linoleum (NOT vinyl flooring). The only modern things in my kitchen are the refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave (when that goes it will not be replaced). The countertops and backsplash are authentic 1950s Mid Century Modern Boomerang formica in yellow with teal and beige boomerangs; I thought about replacing it but it has grown on me so it stays. I keep adding period appropriate pieces to the kitchen-a chrome multi-arm towel drying rack, a white with black trim enamel baking table, a herb/spice cabinet made from a wooden cabinet that was to be thrown in the dumps, etc. Lots and lots of old stuff in my kitchen and throughout my home...and that's the way it's going to be.

In the first few minutes of this video, you said you are going to show us how to do that. But then the video only focused on the styling of the kitchen itself. Cream, Blues , Orange , Green . It has tiles from Mexico on the walls, with flowers, birds and and fish . I will copy that design and paint them on the newly painted cabinets . It looks great , half way done. It is SW Hippy Chic . All happy space to cook SW foods . Fun and awesome.

Mind blown! I now understand why I don’t like my kitchen (we bought it with the intention to remodel). Dark wood ornate traditional cupboards, Granite countertops, rustic plank flooring, white subway backsplash…
I could feel it intuitively but now I know why!
    Thanks

I don’t know about the functionality of ornate back splashes like that decorative 3D tile. I can just see it collecting grime and fat in the grooves. Just my thoughts though.

I have no control over any of the 5 design elements. 😢 But let’s dream here.
    -CONTEMPORARY-
Definitely my style out of the three main styles you mention.
I like the idea of gunmetal-finish appliances; so many white or black appliances look cheap, so gunmetal would be a unique way of making them look fresh and custom. As I mentioned (ranted) on the chat this morning, I’ve never liked the look of stainless steel, so that limits my options. I would definitely prefer appliances that blend seamlessly into the cabinetry, or ones that are unexpected colours like kelly green or Yves Klein blue. But I’ve never met a saturated midtone colour I don’t adore!
When it comes to counters, I love waterfall countertops, especially in white quartz. Just stunning.
I like all-black kitchens in general but not the one you showed at 4:55 because the cabinet finish looks too IKEA-veneer to me.
    -TRANSITIONAL-
There are elements of the kitchen at 6:46 that I like. I like the royal indigo and I like gold, though perhaps not brushed. Lots of white is great. A lot of the other transitional kitchens are a bit rustic or woodsy for me.
    8:12 I like the black-trim pane windows.
9:43 I like the idea of cement tile. I’ve seen that in lots of contemporary spaces too.
    -TRADITIONAL-
10:32 😳 I was not prepared for that kitchen. Visual dominance. (Someone is friends with a welder!)
10:50 I like the idea of this kitchen more than I like its look. I think it’s very warm and homey having the six lanterns in the kitchen, but I wouldn’t choose those particular ones. They also don’t seem congruous for me with the farmhouse-y tile, but maybe they are and I’m just not educated enough on Portuguese style.
10:55 Yeah, I hate this. The butterscotch colour everywhere makes the wood look like it’s rotting, and I don’t understand the random spindle. The floors are lovely, though!
11:02 This looks like a kitchen that someone would design because they want to capture a look and a feeling. It’s not my style so I don’t like it, but admittedly I’m slowly being sold on the multiple-dominant-pendant-lights-in-a-line trend.
11:20 Again with that butterscotch colour that I really don’t care for. At least this room has a bit of grandeur with the ceiling details and large chandeliers.
11:46 This kitchen gives off a steampunk vibe to me. All the appliances here look like more like valises.
14:46 This kitchen is the stuff of my nightmares. The backsplash looks like mismatched leftover linoleum scraps, the furniture belongs on a patio, the palette screams early 1990s builders-box, the chandeliers look like they’re weeping in grief, and I’m pretty sure I had some paneer the other week that looked like the granite countertops. Throw in the Christmas décor, some mouldy jars, and the precariously balanced plate, and you’ve got a look that couldn’t be farther from my aesthetic. Blech. 🤢 (But I’m glad there is a diversity of opinions out there, backpedal, backpedal.)
15:09 The starburst pattern in the tile is giving me MCM vibes. If you went for that early-60s style you could make it work with that look too.
16:17 I do like a vintage parquet floor.

I’ve got a territorial 1980’s desert open concept home with big beautiful satillo tiles. Come from mid century modern home and live that sensibility.
We’re eclectic and like peaceful but not boring look. Have honey colored shaker cabinets, black handles and a huge black brown ish guartz countertop. We’re torn… do we go with more drama for backsplash and do cement ish black or gray or quieter cream with a few 2 x 2 Mexican tiles scattered randomly ( like 5) it’s only 9 feet but it’s a focal point..indecisive in tucson.
Lisa, I love your sensibilities and style.

Wow there are some truly great (and expensive) kitchens in your picutres. In Germany it´s pretty common to have appliances with cabinet fronts (dishwasher and fridges). When I renovated my house five years ago I couldn´t decide on a backsplash (everything was so permanent and expensive). So I did playwood and painted it with chalkboard paint. I love it and it fit´s my space and me: I´m a teacher. =) My stile is contemporary/scandi/simple/clean. Love from Germany ♥

Transitional/Traditional is my favorite style. I love antiques, especially from the victorian era. I love all the details and millwork and artistry that went into them. I do usually not prefer the enormous patterns though, so I would prefer to update the upholstery and keep the silhouette intact. I also love darker cozy spaces and my neutral of choice is gray, which everyone seems to despise but whatever

Yes, I'm wondering if an outdoor kitchen in a small backyard is worth the outlay. I feel like the fire pit, swing and karaoke stage with boulder waterfalls coming down each side already eat up most of my courtyard space, such that only a BBQ grill will keep the space feeling open. There will be 4 seating vignettes. I could make way for the outdoor kitchen, but that is such a huge outlay that I'm leaning toward skipping it.

  • @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane

This was excellent, Lisa! Now I know why I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted for my kitchen remodel... I love them all!!! But my home is mainly a non-ornate cottage style so I've decided my kitchen style will be transitional. Shaker cabinets, light-medium neutral wood stained maple on the bottom cabs and painted white for the tops. Brushed nickel simple hardware and stellar snow quartz countertops. It's the appliance decisions that are killing me! I'm torn between stainless (I'm worried about fingerprints!) and white, or maybe a combo! I'm leaning white because my kitchen faces north and I think it would help brighten it up, but still not sure. It's so hard to picture it, and even my "inspiration picture" has a combination of appliances... so maybe there's not a right or wrong answer!
It's hard to restrain yourself when you like so many different styles, but it's for the best so it doesn't look confused and chaotic in the end! Thank you (and your team!) SO much for all your hard work... you have been the single most helpful person in my kitchen remodel, no question, and I appreciate it more than you know. 🤗

Lisa about the black stainless, that is actually regular stainless with a thin black coating on it. It does look sleek but the coating is prone to cracking and peeling. Not something i would risk for a 5k refrigerator

This is going to be fun because we'll get to see so many great ideas, gorgeous outcomes, whether they would fit our home or purse or not. Oh, one of each, please! I love so much that you are showing us, but the one that gets me (by surprise, I think) is that I adore the the mosaic emblem with pheasants behind the stove and may have to go look for a home to put that in. LOL. I have to say that in terms of finding the right stuff, it might help with your designer to say that you have pets and want the heat source under the flooring, so now what is available to me? That gives the designer, even if it's just an advisor at the shop, your life requirements and you may hold back that if you found only ugly choices that you may reconsider the heat source placement, but the pets are family and not negotiable. I think sometimes there are problems when you do not even make clear to a salesperson what your life needs are: like, if your husband is quite tall, but also often in a wheelchair. Though I must say that, unless I fall in love with a piece, I often buy jewelry this way. When we got our wedding/engagement rings, I told the jeweler what metals, stones, styles, and price range we were looking in. Then it was more or less "show us what you've got." Then I eliminated what I did not like, my spouse eliminated what he did not like, and then we chose with fairly little time or debate required and none of our parameters were overlooked.

My house has a lot of knotty pine. Walls and floors are pine. But the open kitchen is all white and beadboard, not knotty pine. When we bought the house, it seemed totally disconnected. I began putting in white...white ceilings, white trim, new white trim windows, white beam between the kitchen and living area and a big chunky white electric fireplace on the living room side. Trying to tie in the white cabinets. But it's not enough. It's still disconnected...in style I guess mostly. The knotty pine looks country, log cabin or something. The kitchen is white shaker looking cabinets with beadboard inserts and a big chunky beadboard island. The kitchen seems cottage style. Both are pretty on their own, they don't flow and they're open to one another. I don't know what to do to make them gel.

Lisa!! This video was SO helpful and well done! You could totally make a whole series out of this breaking down the sub-styles within the 3 main styles like mid-century modern, scandinavian, coastal, industrial, etc! We have a 1956 mid-century modern home so there are a lot of contemporary elements but it's also transitional because it has that 1950s family cozy non-pretentious look too.
