I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I heard this back in the day and it still rocks my world 40 years later. Love this track so much and love that YOU love it.
As already mentioned they were all in Frank Zappa's band so are great musicians. I really liked this band and have all their albums. Terry is a world class drummer. He was married to singer Dale during this time.
I know right? We used to hang out in KROQ's parking lot when they were in that building off of Green St in Pasadena. We'd always wait for the least enthralling DJ, "Jed the Fish" and scream his name in false admiration when he got off work and would walk to his car in the parking lot. That was like late 1970's, maybe early 80's. That was before KROQ became a big deal, long before. Back then they were almost like a full-time Dr. Demento show. The 1980's were fun. The music was fun, people were fun, things were fun, almost everybody was just having fun and doing fun things. Kids nowadays mock the 80's and for something to be 80's is an insult in their mind. Not mine. They have no idea. The economy was good, & in the early 80's there was no AIDs. The AIDS PR-machine didn't hit until I think around 1985. "Rare" and "difficult to contract" they lied. Even metal was fun with the big hair, makeup, & ridiculous clothes. Someone once asked if given the choice would I go back to live in that time period without cell phones & widespread computer use. My answer: in a heartbeat.
One of my fave bands from the 80s. Lady Gaga borrows a few ideas from lead singer Dale Bozzio. Destination Unknown is my favorite, along with Words, and Walking in LA.
I love Missing Persons. In the late 1970's there was a singer named Lene Lovich who used this type of New Wave vocals like she does.Songs like "Lucky Number" & "New Toy".
Great call on Lene, more people need to be acquainted with the brilliantly weird and eclectic wonder that is Lene Lovich and her hetero lifemate Nina Haggen.
Takes me back to being a teenager in 1983.Love Missing Persons! Dale Bozzio’s unique voice has always been a favorite of mine amongst female vocalist.Check out their songs Words and Destination Unknown.Great Synth Rock!
Check out "Words" and "Destination Unknown," great pop songs with a less aggressive sound. "Walking in L.A." is a cool song too. The drummer and singer were husband and wife (Terry and Dale Bozzio). Where's the chicken?
First heard on KROQ in Los Angeles (actually Orange County for me) in 1982. Great band. Listening to them so many years later, I can appreciate them musically even more.
Singer, drummer and guitar player all recorded and/or toured with Frank Zappa. That's a testimony to their musicianship. Yes, this is the punk edge of New Wave.
The frenetic energy at the end of the bridge! Wow! It's almost like you're ready to here or expect an explosion! Like someone's mind is about to explode who's sick and tired of playing Mental Hopscotch. Super talented! Super musicianship! Terry Bozzio's drumming! One of my top favorite New Wave bands of the early 80's. They have like a cool heavy metal-techno rock pop sound. So unique.
Thank you for your reaction India loved at as always. I haven’t heard this song in years. I remember the first time I heard it on the radio I thought it was Deborah Harry from Blondie .❤️😃👍🌼✌️ Love and peace
Makes me feel 21 again. Missing Persons, Nina Hagen, Lydia Lunch, Bow Wow Wow, Martha and the Muffins, Romeo Void. Of course the drummer's impressive, you don't work for Zappa without being damn good.
I saw Nina Hagen play at the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC in 1982 or thereabouts. Great show! I'd love to hear a reaction to her version of White Punks On Dope. The Tubes version as well.
@@JamesWilson-vr3ql I will admit that she looked like she was around 20 yrs old. I vaguely recall the scandal that popped up over the photos. Oh I was 12 when "I Want Candy" came out in 82.
Punk in attitude, to a degree, but Missing Persons was part of the New Wave as reflected back towards London from Los Angeles. "Walking in L.A." was another of their hits. I don't remember when I first heard "Mental Hopscotch," but Dale Bozzio definitely caught my attention back then when I was still in my early teens. Yowsa!
Back in the day we used to refer to Dale Bozzio, the lead singer as the “dog toy” of the New Wave movement due to that distinct squeak. And for a more tasty, salacious tale. The lead guitar player, Warren Cuccurullo, was known as an enthusiastic bisexual, as well as having a very large, well, instrument. On the side he did a coupla porn flicks (look ‘em up on Pornhub) of various… genres? But he achieved greatest fame later on when he joined the music group Duran Duran. The 80s… things could get pretty crazy. I miss ‘em.
I remember seeing this video on MTV when I was about 13 or so. I don't think that I really HEARD the song. Since then, I've been compiling a playlist of 80s songs and I included Mental Hopscotch. It's one of those songs that I hit repeat multiple times, especially when I'm in the car. It gets so INTENSE during the solo and 3rd/final verse. I was searching for different versions of this song and found this video. I LOVED seeing your reaction to the song. I feel the same way when the tone gets loud, and I think that you're right. It seems faster. And Terry Bozio's drumming is powerful. Dale Bozzio's voice and lyrics were so underrated. I share this song with anyone who seems like they would be open to it.

I don't know if you're a musician, but if not, VERY astute observation about the drummer. He is very good and has been for a long time.
