Fun fact: this is the 2nd oldest Cable-Stayed bridge in the country (only the Sunshine Skyway in FL is older). It was built to have the necessary 150 ft clearance over the James River for ocean bound ships to and from the Port Of Richmond.
Good to know.
I have relatives in Hopewell, VA and use this bridge on my way to visit them from Ohio & then back home. Nice bridge indeed.
Neat looking bridge
I just to call this the dinosaur bridge when I was younger. The cables look like spikes of a dinosaurs back to me.
Fun fact if you squint your eyes and look really closely at the 11oclock position at the Pinnacle of the bridge going north you can see the tips of the skyscrapers in Richmond. Even better in the winter
Gotta keep the eyes on the road though!
Sounds like when you crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge in DE
@leonation89 yep!! Although Philly has humongous buildings....Richmond unfortunately can't build tall high rises beyond city hall which isn't that tall, luckily it sits on a hill so buildings that are technically taller then city hall sit below the hill, giving the illusion that many buildings are the same height
Fabulous bridge sir. Thank you for the tour.
Nice.cool bridge.was eyeing the truck traffic too.its the shotgun rider in me.a case of that old white line fever.its in the blood.once its in there.never leaves.i sure got it.
That's a neat lookin bridge
I saw someone jump from this bridge yesterday morning..
Do you know if you could do Midlothian turnpike, Chesterfield county va?
Already left the area. Maybe on the way back.
Can you cover another useless toll, it's the toll road 895 in Richmond it's only like a couple miles long before it's puts you onto 295..
Why do you say it's useless? I'm not familiar with the area, do people not use it?
@@MileageMikeTravels Richmond has an issue with urban sprawl. Basically it tries to stunt the growth of the metro area in the counties. Also Richmond doesn't have a proper Beltway that is completely connected like the capital Beltway in Washington dc. Therefore 895 was built as a connector from 95 as 288 and 295 do not meet to create a proper Richmond Beltway. But the issue is no one really use 895 because urban sprawl and Varina is pretty minimal in addition to the toll is expensive.
True its short and a toll but from where I live South of the James its a lifesaver to reach the airport. Much better than 95 to 64 east or rt 10 to 295. I know that's not the reason it was built but its the reason I use it
This is the one I was thinking of in the 195 comment. Kind of overdone for the area but it is a nice cable stay bridge. I think there was a pile up on it a few years ago where fog rolled in and cut visibility to zero. Edit: I was wrong. It was on I-64.
True. It's probably one of the nicest looking rural bridges I've seen.
