The genius of science: GZA & Science Genius at TEDxTeen 2014

  • j.mp/TxT14GZA -- GZA is a founding member of the seminal hip hop group, the Wu-Tang Clan, and co-founder of SCIENCE GENIUS with Christopher Emdin of Teachers College. The program seeks to engage high school students in science using hip hop. The pilot program met with great success in terms of recognition and results: participating schools saw an increase in regents exams scores and 15-25% in attendance. When asked who was his favorite Wu Tang member, Mayor Elect of New York City, Bill DiBlasio, said "GZA. Not only is he a great lyricist, but I also admire his work to engage African American and Latino students in the sciences."
    GZA appeared alongside RZA in Jim Jarmusch's film Coffee & Cigarettes, opposite Bill Murray. The two also appeared on the Chappelle Show's in the now legendary skits "Wu Tang Financial" and "Racial Draft."
    GZA has lectured at Harvard, Oxford, USC, MIT, NYU, Cornell, and JPL/NASA. In his travels, he has met with a myriad scientists to seek inspiration for his forthcoming album entitled DARK MATTER, which will be released Spring 2014. The project is a natural extension of his longtime fascination with the cosmos. "I will take a quantum leap and discuss the universe while taking us on a journey through deep space. Traveling at lightspeed from the galactic center of one galaxy to the farthest corners of another. I hope my listeners will enjoy this cosmic adventure within a world of colossal planets, gas giants, meteorites, comets, and asteroids in the most extreme conditions."

    5:57 I feel him on that. I am a 24 year old with an anxiety disorder. Growing up I had a terrible stutter and my anxiety disorder made me afraid to express myself and put myself out there in the world. When I was 8 years old my parents got cable and I went into the other room where I saw my first rap video. There was a guy on the side of a building saying that he bombed atomically and that Socrates, philosophies, and hypotheses can't define how he be droppin' these and I was hooked. Groups like Wu-Tang Clan provided me a way out of that dark angry place I created myself; I even quoted their songs over and over again to help me overcome my stutter. I received confidence where I felt inadequate, an outlet for all the hostility I had built up from being different, and they peaked my curiosity into things that I had never heard mentioned before. I became the first person in my family to graduate college and I am in law school now preparing for my first big exam. I took a break to watch a GZA video and here I am now.

    The way the GZA analyses and describes hip hop as an artform and platform to educate ourself and our children is something rappers are rarely able to do. This needs an unique form of intelligence. That is why he is The Genius.

    • @mc365mc
      @mc365mc 10 років тому +10

      I think GZA is able to describe the artistry of rap music so well because he is speaking as a hip hop musician who's chosen to be an emcee rather than a rapper.
      It's like the difference between Kenny G. and Wynton Marsalis. The motivation of the emcee is not material, but for the love of the craft and the respect of ones peers. He holds the genre in high regard and challenges himself as well as his audience to evolve with each new release of material. In the last few years he's stopped using curse words in his music, as he's come to the conclusion that for the most part rappers use curse words because they lack sufficient vocabulary to express a thought completely and it no longer has shock value as everyone has become desensitized from the constant profanity. All in all I would say he is the second most under rated rap musician the first being AZ.

    Thats genius linking music to science and education because this will attract kids to science. Just like GZA I was fascinated with science and was amazed in my high school class to see water boil at room temperature which in consequence led me to pursue a Chemistry degree. Science is amazing and mysterious which is why I love it especially during the discovery phase where you learn something new!

    This is the kind of material I grew up listening to back in the day. Emcees had you running to the library to study what they were rapping about.
    Hopefully this will spark the second phase of another golden era of rap. The last 17 years has been the worst years of rap. And no it's not age. it's the complexity of the rhymes have been getting so bad that they are competing with Mother Goose.

    I have read about this project in a Dutch newspaper but quite forgot about it. Cool to see the actual program itself! This is a great way to engage kids into science by having a good and impressive role-model presenting it. When I was in high school I couldnt stay awake in physics class because a) it was always on monday and tuesday morning b) the teacher had a droning voice which soothed me into sleep c) the presentation, not the subject itself, was brought quite boring so it did not stimulate me to actively partake in the class. History class was the other way around. But I digress, I can see great possibilities for this program being applied to other classes like English language and literature, history, art etcetera.

    Using art/music/rhyme to teach concepts about life and academics is an old concept. It is the foundation of Sesame Street, nursery rhyme etc, what I think continues to be great here is that the students obviously enjoy learning; and remember, they had to do the work researching the information for their raps.

    • @daniluchison
      @daniluchison 8 років тому +2

      It is an old concept but using it through hip hip is new but regardless of it being new or old, the most profound idea is that the tool (hip hop) is MOSTLY ONLY accessed by inner city kids. The same kids that will rarely see an opportunity to see and experiments great things in life. That's whats different and more importantly, NOBLE.
