    Debz you’re one of the most financially successful skaters in the world. You are a professional by the merit that professional means you do it for money. You’re more pro than me I technically skate for free.

    This rings so true to me! I’m a community college teacher and I learned more my first year teaching than I did in 7 years of college preparing to be a teacher! Good teachers are lifelong learners and approach their lives and disciplines like a student…you have shown us over the years just how much of a wonderful teacher you are and it’s your passion for learning at that core! By the way, I took a Zoom class with you through Rolla Skate and you gave me a shout out. I was on cloud 9 for the rest of the week! I drove down to Fountain Valley from Sac just to skate there on my 46th birthday this past year. Thanks for all of your encouragement and passion for learning which is so evident in your teaching.

    I feel the struggle, also as someone with suspected ADHD. People will explain and show things in one way and it can be hard to wrap my head around it. I have to constantly rework things until I have that, "Aha!" moment where I find a way to explain it that makes more sense to me. It can also be hard to translate body movement into things that fit your own body-- what a movement feels and looks like for one person might look and feel completely different for another person and you might have to move more or position yourself differently to get the same results. I struggle with this a lot with dancing. It's all about that adaptability and creativity! I'm greatful for you and so many others who make the effort to find different answers for different learners.

    You have helped me so much these past few months. I've been going through a transitionary period in life and started skating to keep my mental health up. You have helped me get so much better at skating SO FAST, but also your videos like these remind me that skating teaches us so much more than just the moves. It's a lifestyle and a mindset. The main rule at the rink by my house is to have a positive attitude. Thank you for helping me find balance and happiness in the chaos! 🤘

    Your and the rink's investment in the skating community is truly admirable. So many rinks have failed (historically and more recently (covid)) because all they do is open and close, collecting admission & rental money for open skate & parties. It's so clear from seeing FV facility in your videos that a lot of effort goes into maintenance and enhancement of the facility. Your mention of the Monday night session is exciting. You and FV are awesome. I might just need to move closer!! 😊

    I learn the way you do… I never pick up line dances or new moves at the rink quick… A lot of people teach by showing and that doesn’t help me at all… you have to explain in parts which most people can’t. I have to make everything make sense to me then in a few months if I care enough it’ll come…
    For example: when I was learning to slow walk… I couldn’t get it at all until I realized you should think of it as pulling in your leg and not pushing it out…. Lol something so simple that no one explained and definitely made a difference for me

  • @AmandaSkate

    I identify! Everything I can legibly say I’m good at, it’s because I drilled it over and over and over again. I learned early on I can’t be good at everything, but I can be good at one or two things. So, when I find something I like, I focus on it. It’s a numbers game. You put X number of hours into what you want to master, eventually you will get much better at it. I like projects. Right now, skating is my project. 🙂

    • @jetoux4881
      @jetoux4881 2 роки тому

      Exactly! I agree with everything you said!! All of the things I’m good at when I’m roller-skating is because I’ve practiced it, fell many times, got tired, and repeat over, and over, and over again until it just clicks!

  • @dailytacticsnerf
    @dailytacticsnerf 2 роки тому +1

    I feel this, I'm not naturally gifted with anything but I can get good at anything through obsessing over understanding the movement and the technicalities. I dont mind drilling it, falling a bit, and learning new things. I wanna be able to do the moves without thinking. And the only way to do that is to observe, obsess, and repeat. OCD is a hell of a drug, lol!!

  • @michaels5166
    @michaels5166 2 роки тому +2

    First of all, you teach people, and you know the proper basic, so you are a professional..PERIOD..I teach with a well known team, and I am the beginner/safety instructor, and when we started, many students would THINK it was because I did not have advanced skills. Now common sense says, if I am teaching people who are clinging to the wall, shaking, scared, teaching them to fall and stop properly, I know what I am doing. I even told some people, I am NOT teaching you a waltz jump, reverse Tstops/plows, nor a double heel 4 wheel glide, because I do that on MY time.
    It's not the job of your instructor to impress anyone, and admittedly I have always been bored with 'routines'.I ran competitive track and most track coaches do NOT fly down the track doing 23 second 200 meter splits. I do not even do many 'trains' either because frankly ,I shine skating in crowed spaces and love to improvise, not do preprogrammed routines. Can I do them? Yes, If I cared to put my mind to that, if we are doing something together in training , or if it was a showcase. Now if you're skating competitively at a sanctioned event or part of a skating team that focuses on performances, then it matters.
    There's skaters who shine in the middle doing a routine, yet then get on the floor, getting in the way of other skaters because they expect the space for their routines, and that can get hairy. For example, if there's 10 people doing a routine with floor work, how would you pull that off in a crowd of 300 people trying to skate a session? That's exactly why DJs clear the floor first before doing trains and trios, instead of the potential dangers to skaters, especially beginners. So to all especially new to skating or learning something new, you are NORMAL if you need to practice more, because we are not born with skates, skis, nor skateboards. I also used to ride my butt off and cycled for over 30 years, and I am physically built for getting up and riding 50 + miles any day, yet that does not mean I did not have challenges learning to climb hills or ride in a peloton. Your primary focus should always be SAFE, FUN skating and then practice will also be safe and fun.

    Hey Dirty! Thanks for always doing these videos and the tutorials! I purchased my first pair of skates this year after following your channel for a couple of years. So thanks!
    I have been practicing learning crossovers and backwards skating. I was wondering could you provide a few more details on backwards skating. Where I’m struggling is continuing moving backwards. From a standstill in an ‘A’ frame I can move a little on one foot, it struggle to take another stride on the other. Can’t seem to translate it to consistent movement. In following the other videos you have on backwards skating, and I can’t seem to connect it. Any suggestions?
    Also if anyone is a newbie and in the Seattle area, wanna practice together?

    Trying to learn to skate after 40 years was hard even though I was in good shape & very active. After being able to skate around the rink comfortably, I wanted to learn more & wow was it overwhelming! I tried to learn way too many things at once & would get frustrated. I have accepted to slow down & take small bites & learn basics & that it was ok to repeat over & over the same thing. Its ok to take your time to get this stuff.

      I noticed it’s the angle! When you’re going forward your feet are in the V and when it’s backwards it’s the opposite V and the body weight is opposite. I think bubbles will help us with the body weight and muscle

    Hi, I was wondering what your recommendations were for outdoor skates? I’m a newer skater (I use to skate often as a child, but never in my adulthood), so I’m a little out of practice and was looking around. I e noticed some brands like Moonlight, Moxi, Chaya, and others being mentioned.

    I love all the motivation you give us, specially to for us getting back into skating after many years. Do you have a video or can you make a video on stretching or exercises that would help specially for me to get stronger and maybe a little more flexible so if I fall again I would not be out of commission for months. Still have little soreness around my knee and ankle that I sprained a while ago.

    Question for all you pros! lol So when I was a kid I lived on roller skates, outdoors and in the rinks. I haven't been on skates in years! But if someone was to have asked me if I can skate and if I want to go skating I would have said yes, because I assumed its like riding a bike and I still knew how. How ever.....lol I just got some skates and I can barely stand without falling, do I need to learn all over again? Can you forget how to skate?

    For me you are getting one with the floor..which has way more power than someone using the ground to show off what they "can".
    But seeing how you glide backwards while you talk, it is like the floor is your friend. It is very beautiful to watch ♡
