LOVED! LOVED! LOVED! This vlog topic! Every time I feel like I mastered something (anything in life), I have to remind myself to bring it back to the basics, tear it apart and rebuild. I ask myself did I learn the skill well? So well, that I can make it into something different, making the skill versiatile? I start analyzing how to remake it, not necessarily into something better, but different. Like getting a new prospective. Like cooking. Now that I made the chicken, how can I take the same chicken and make it into something completely different? It reminds me of the movie, Runaway Bride, where he asks her how she likes her eggs and all she can think about is its "eggs." and he's like there's so much more to eggs! like Dirty said, now that you know the movement to the right, can you do it to the left? Can you generalize that same task? Meaning can you apply that same concept you just used in another setting? That's how you know if you've learnt the new skill well. Now to make it different, add to it or take something away. Modify it so it becomes different. Again, not necessarily better, but different! Yes, definitely loved today's conversation!!!
Skating has been the most amazing hobby for my self confidence, respect, mental health and self worth. Every time I get on my skates there's a new victory. I can see and feel the improvement every time I leave the rink. In a life ruled by uncertainty and the feeling of being behind everyone else, skating is a world in which you're celebrated for every improvement and I cannot express how life changing it is.
The best thing I ever did as a skater was decide to enjoy being hella mediocre. But I'm getting there and having the time of my life. (Deb, you have a huge hand in that.) Thank you for being you always.
It's so true that you can't get worse at skating. I could hardly balance on my skates a few weeks ago. Now I can confidently skate across my dorm room without grabbing a bedpost for dear life.
Exactly my story! First lap around parking spots worrying for my life, and now? there is no car around? lets go few faster ones :-D (Still sometimes fight for life (with myself), but a lot of fun doing that)...
That's awesome! I started a week ago and today I finally felt confident on my skates too. A bit wobbly, but gaining confidence. Keep up the great work you're doing ☺️
Thank you for this video. I left the online skating community two years ago when moxi skates blew up and people with two weeks of skating experience under their belt started posting transition tutorials with locked knees. It was hard to find genuine people skating for the right reasons and not for the insta fame. I started enjoying skating a lot more. I go a few times a month and leave the phone in the car. Doin it for me. ✌️
Spitting facts!! A lot of beginners trick chase like “On to the next!” when they don’t look that great doing something they think is simple. Like giiirrll 😒
Well some of us don’t know where to begin. Some people have training or skating from a young age. We are trying to teach ourself. Now if we knew where to start and where to end that may be better instead there are a million beginner videos and they all teach something different.
Omg, I have so been doing this to myself. Not "I've got this, let's move on", but riding myself for how incredibly slowly I am progressing. My coach and my derby friend are both trying to get me to STOP COMPARING and celebrate my achievements. To stop saying they are so small and pointless. And less than a week after those conversations, you post this. This is definitely something I need to internalize.
Absolutely SPOT-ON!! Like Deborah, I am way more impressed with a skater who, although may be doing simpler moves, does it with 100% sincere passion (versus someone with great tricks, but lack of personality/feeling).
I needed to hear this. I'm constantly comparing myself, a 350lb 30 year old to my 7 year old who's picking up new skills almost everyday. I keep feeling like I'm not getting anywhere slowly skooting along while she's literally skating circles around me. I feel like I'm stuck because I've done all I can in my small apartment, but skating outside I keep getting knocked on my butt by rocks, and I'm too embarrassed to skate at the rink. I feel like im stagnating and find myself wondering if I'll never progress seeing others progress so quickly. I really needed to hear someone give me permission to work slower and accept where I'm at now instead of thinking if I'm not getting better fast I need to quit.
Go to the rink! I started beginner classes a few weeks ago, I'm 35 and by far not the oldest person learning the basics. Everyone is really nice and supportive, I have fallen on my bum so many times and it just doesn't matter. I'm learning and having fun doing it.
I know you posted this 6 months ago but if it doesn't help you, it might help someone else... Maybe you should go to the rink. Heck, even if it's not to skate and just look. You can't compare yourself to little kids. Look at them there. They go on the floor falling everywhere in the first 20 minutes, without caring and crying and by the time they leave they know how to skate already... (I'm 220 lbs and 35 and just started a month ago, i can't even skate outside yet cause it's scary) makes me think that if you don't go to rinks, you must skate outside. You know how scary that it?!? You doing great. I hope you didn't give up. And if so, BUT THOSE SKATES BACK ON RIGHT NOW! 😂 💕
It's so easy to compare yourself to others when you should ONLY be focused on enjoying the sk8 session. I kept trying to transition and go backwards but didn't feel comfortable just going around the rink forward. Once I focused on just feeling the music and shifting my weight my rink teacher started complimenting my skating to a friend. I was shocked like what did he see that was soo different this time. By the end of the session I figured it out.. he finally saw me! I didn't feel like a deer I didn't care who was looking I just had fun. Ever since that day I can spin transition and even almost fall with a 😃Don't ever forget to have fun just because you're nervous!! I usually skate nervous for the 1st hr it used to tick me off but that's just me bc once I get good and stretched and loose I'm sweaty and all smiles. Happy skating everybody 💜
I just turned 47 & purchased a pair of skates for my birthday. It’s been years since I skated so I’m a newbie again. Suits me fine. I just wanna focus on the core basics so I have a strong base to start with. Just being on my skates learning basics over & over gives me so much confidence & joy. Thanks Dirty for the awesome videos. Lots of love from New Zealand 😝👍
Ok you have convinced me. I’m 54 and I haven’t skated in years. I mean since the 80s. I’m going to try again. I was like I’m too old, too fat, can’t learn again, I may fall and break a bone… I’m going to by some skates and start over again.
@@LisaLisaCJ Yayyyyyy! Go for it! Why not! Make sure you get your safety helmet, wrist, elbow, & knee pads for starting out. And watch up on the beginner vids again. It’s sooooo much fun & good exercise. I use to skateboard when I was in my teens-30’s & roller skate as a kid. Learning to roller skate again is so liberating. Enjoy 😻
@@LisaLisaCJ Hahaaaaa that’s cool! You’ll have to let me know how you go. I just got home from a skate. It was awesome & I’ve progressed so much in just one practice session. They’ve got the local roller derby muster tomorrow. I might pop in for a look. Why not right? What have I got to lose 😝👍
Thank you for this!!! I started skating for the very first time three weeks ago and I was so unbalanced, so afraid and my anxiety was through the roof. I had a couple falls that were not serious but still very painful. I was very hard on myself and wondered if I’d ever get it right. Presently I can skate forward and slowly getting comfortable. I’ve wanted to skate my entire life so I’m definitely committed to the process, although I felt a bit discouraged during those first days. The small progress I’ve made has personally been very encouraging. I totally agree with your point. The process and our personal progression needs to be respected. I would prefer to do the same move repeatedly until it becomes natural for my body to move that way. At the very least, it’ll lower the risk of injury.
A lot of people now have an attitude of entitlement, and they want instant total satisfaction. Many people don't want to do the work that is required for mastery. They don't want to practice. People have been conditioned to think everything should be easy. Skating well is different from just forcing out a move like the turd it is. Honestly a skater who is worth their salt will work on basic stroking and crossovers every single time they step on the floor.
And you've never ever acted that way in this lifetime? You're the kind of person who can pick out the flaws in others, simply because these things don't apply to you, am I right? You're the type of person everyone comes to for advice, because you have all the advice in the world of things not to do or things they can do better, because you're above that, you're better than that.
i’ve been losing my motivation and purpose in my life and decided to pick up skating again, i haven’t skated in years since i had a bad fall and injury, my mental health has definitely improved having something enjoyable and fun and constant to relax to. i’m so grateful for skating.
I just bought my first pair of skate they are coming next week. Been watching this channel to prepare myself for learning to skate. I had this small fear of judgment when im learning in public. This video makes me feel really good about trying and learning how to skate. I'm so excited, I remember skating at a rink as a kid, and I'm so ready to do it again as an adult.
I started lessons in August and have been loving the process. I’m all in and have drilled my problem areas so I’m super comfortable doing them. I have hit plateaus; the key is to still get out there and practice, practice, and practice. You will have a success. I promise. Don’t talk yourself out of ANYTHING. I was JUST struggling to get back up from Shoot The Duck. This past Saturday, a new person in the class gave me a tip. AND IT WORKED! I got up from Shoot The Duck!!! So exciting!!!
Skated from age 3 until injury in accident four years ago. Skated mostly outdoors with a brief stop in Artistic skating. After all those years, I still drilled the basics. Anyone who thinks they're an expert after a few classes needs to check themselves. Learning is ongoing in skating...respect the process and you'll reap the rewards over a lifetime.
I love this topic, I'm getting back into skating after not skating since I was a kid. I'm watching so many videos of people learning, and they are focusing on learning all the tricks, I'm focused on the basics and doing it with ease, tricks come much later. I just want it to feel natural like when I was a kid. I lived on skates.
I still watch your basic videos to build on my skills, even the older ones. I hear you saying “don’t try to upgrade” whenever I try to move on without nailing the fundamentals. Thank you for your videos. 🥰
There's no such thing as "that's beginner stuff" when it comes to skating, there's always something to improve. It's the reckless "pros" who're disrespectful. Flying across the rink with no regard for others, totally aggravating.
It's the journey, not the destination. Whenever you learn something new you're gonna look like a fool. You have to be okay with looking like a fool for awhile and get over the pride issue. Our whole job for our own lives is to be a little better than the day before, make improvements. You're a great teacher, thank you for all the videos.
Thank you for this. I was afraid to watch it. You hit on so many deep topics. I’m gonna be returning to this video on a regular basis🙏💙 The skills, wisdom, and mindset you reinforce are so meaningful to me and so foundational! I would not still be skating if it wasn’t for your mentoring🙌🙌🙌
It’s interesting how every time I feel down about my skating abilities you come out with a video to encourage me. I only been skating for about a month and a half and today and I’m still slow and can only go forward and I see how amazing my husband is and I got really disappointed at myself for being scared to try something new. Thanks for the video.
Its the honest and in-your-face approach I love about your "school", Deb. I am not a stylish skater, I'm not experienced, I'm not even good but I'm learning and always will be. Can't get better if I already know it all.
People think it’s weird that I work on my fundamentals more than anything else, but it shows up time and time again in me trying to try more advanced techniques when they seem to come easy. There is no “too beginner for me” when it comes to learning a craft. Those core fundamentals are key to your development. You keep skating and level up over time. If you can’t enjoy the journey, this is the wrong hobby for you.
Thank you so so much for this! I love the "It's not good if it's not better" realization. That is a real pressure. That's why the only one we should be comparing ourselves with is OURSELVES. All of our journeys and experiences will be different.
I just started skating 2 weeks ago(have gone skating twice) and I can honestly say I have gotten more confident as a person. I have also gotten better at skating. First day I was all over the railing and couldn't move two feet without stumbling. Second day (after watching videos) I was able to move and stay off the railing for the most part. Through this whole experience I can totally agree it's one of those things you have to trust the process. Happy skating everyone :)
I loved when skaters encouraged me early on and now I'm doing the same for others. I skate because I love it and I feel myself getting better but I always remember to keep fun at the forefront on my mind and I know that everything will fall into place. Have fun skate fam!!!
Oh, Dirty, you wonderful human being. Thank you for this. Skating has definitely made me a happier and more confident person in all areas of my life. And your lessons helped me to get the courage to try it.
This makes me feel so good because I love practising the stuff I already know. I love going backwards and making it look 💯 I love being able to go forward and transition smoothly but that's not enough for some people.
Deb, not sure how you are able to articulate these topics so well but you do. Don’t understand how you are able to say what you do and come from a place of kindness but you do. Thank you for always being clear, kind, and inspirational with your words and your skating which are both an expression of being connected with your true spirit and it shows!
I can't commend you enough, Dirty! This is exactly the reason why I can't wait to take a class with you because its your growth-oriented mindset is exactly what's needed for people of any age, especially those like myself, where its been decades who are wanting to get back into the skating fun again! You're awesome!
One important thing too is enjoying the now!! When I watch children naturally progress, I’m witnessing them having FUN! And that will let them naturally pick it up at their own pace and run with it.
I have just started skating again after probably 15 years, I wasn’t crazy good or whatever, I’m 28 now. I found these amazing marathon speed skates. I want to be a speed skater, but your videos apply and help so well. You helped me understand and dude the FLOW feeling is the best thing I’ve felt. It feels like flying, I can’t wait to control this fully. Thank you so much for your positivity ❤ this has already started to change my life
I've been rollerblading since I was a kid & stumbled upon some tiktok skaters recently and I was absolutely captivated by the style and art of skating and skate dancing! It was very basic but they made it look SO GOOD! So inspiring I bought my first pair of skates & it feels like I'm starting from square one in these compared to blading. Got my skates Tuesday & found your channel on Wed! I'm only on lesson 2&3 but you are an awesome teacher& I love your energy. My son got skates for Christmas so we are learning & falling together. Skating is our new family hobby!
Thank you SO MUCH for this! I'm a month into learning how to skate in a roller derby training class and I am a person that tends to get frustrated if skills don't come quickly and I don't feel comfortable right away. So thanks for this reminder. I needed it. And thanks for being awesome!
Thank you! I needed this. Not for skating (just yet) but in life. I started getting interested in skating last year and I’ve learned so much about the mechanics, caring for my skates, what kind of skates to get and which to avoid. So much more goes into skating than putting on a pair of rentals. Life is the same way. There are lessons to be learned but if all we do is check off boxes, we’re going to miss the lesson. Thank you Deb! A word!
Dirty! This video inspired me to take myself out for a non-judgmental solo skate today. I just did the basics, I didn’t pressure myself to go crazy or learn new tricks. I just decided to enjoy what I could do, and to really FEEL it. It was amazing! I fell in love with skating all over again. Thank you❤️
I'm crying. This video hit way too close to home I actually felt like you were talking to me. You're encouraging me to go back to skating, haven't done it in 25 years but I'm scared. Hope I overcome that fear because I am struggling with so many things you mentioned and I think skating could actually save me. Thank you Dirty ❤
I needed this. I discovered freestyle slalom some time ago, and in pursuit of learning some moves way beyond my ability, I pushed myself way too hard and way too fast, and I had two really bad falls, the kind of falls I never had when I was skating in my natural range and working on the basics. I fortunately found this channel, and it helped me put my skills in perspective, and it showed me the skills I should be working on: namely learning forward and backward crosspulls on my bad leg, learning to turn to the left as well as the right, and improving various skills in the opposite direction around the rink. It brought me down to Earth, and I believe it will be much safer for me from here on out and allow me to skate for the rest of my life. Fortunately, I did not break anything in my bad falls, but it did keep me off skates for a long time.
Love you DDH, always saying what we need to hear. I started skating again a year ago and wanted to correct my good footing backwards which was humbling as I was extremely comfortable with backwards. I put in the work based on your advice and a year later, I’m no longer good footing and skating backwards properly. Am I as comfortable as I was good footing? Hell no. But each week I get a bit more comfortable in tiny increments and I’m okay with that. I also took jam skating classes that have levelled up my skills and also taught me I have A LOT to learn and practice - which I have but I still have a long way to go and I’m okay with that too because I plan to never stop skating again for the rest of my life which means that my own progressive progress is something to look forward to everyday.
I'm watching your chanel from 1 year. In this week I took my rollerskates and maked first 2 lessons. They look easy but..... I'm steel not feel ready for next lesson! I feel, that I need more practis :) And that is fantastic! :) I love your lessons, and first time I see you so seriously :)
I’m not sure if this comment is off topic or not, but I started practicing Crazy Legs November of 2020 and I JUST nailed it tonight. Persistence pays off.
Dirty, I'm about to be 50 years old and hope to be skating when I'm in my 90's! How amazing this would be! I thank you for ALL your tutorials and skate talk! I'm so motivated by your energy and positivity! Currently at work and can't wait to go home to practice, practice, practice. Thank you for this talk. Every now and then we need to be reminded that to be our best and reach our destination, we need to be in the moment in our journey. Thank you so much!
This is exactly what I needed to hear. You are so dead on with this one. Skating is a journey, I would rather progress slowly and cultivate basics. There will be plenty of time to look good on the rink floor! You are amazing! New subscriber and student here for all of it!
11:23 spoke to me on a spiritual level. Skating came to me at the perfect time. It is the absolute perfect sport for me. I've hated exercise and have had a complex about health and fitness for a lifetime. I also love music and skating and music go together like peanut butter and jelly. You mean a physical activity that lets me be one with my favorite music? Then, pretty much my entire life turned upside down: - I came out of an 8 year relationship - I got a major shift in my job/career - I moved out from living with my partner And skating was all I had left. I am forever humbled by skating. It teaches me everyday that I am going to fall down, stumble or struggle, but its all about trying again and paying attention to WHY I stumbled or fell and adjust accordingly. I am forever grateful and learning to get back up on my feet, find my balance and dance to my rhythm💖
"Work on those essential skills until they feel amazing!" Truth! If you can spin left, work on spinning right! I feel like you know when to level up when you don't have to think about moves and your body just does them on its own from your own natural artistic flow.
THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS APPLYING THIS SPEECH ABOUT SKATING TO EVERY GROWTH AREA OF MY FREAKING LIFE! My Goodness! I imagine this would make me into a great man. encouraging wisdom. magnifique. tres tres tres magnifique.
I love everything you said! I came thinking this video was entirely something else. This is life advice on and off skates, if we can perfect this in all aspects of life we will see amazing things happen for ourselves. Just back to skating, it's been years, so many telling me "you know just because you did it before doesn't mean you can or should do it again, you're in shape but not a kid anymore". I just didn't understand that because I thought why not just wish me luck and say that you hope I have fun, keep those other words to yourself, they're not nice! I am happily going to work hard on the basic fundamentals, I want that smooth look to my skating. People say to me that I look like a model when I walk across the room.....that took years of practice as an insecure, shy kid to get there, I worked on the fundamentals of holding my head up and standing straight and focussing on me and my look, my style. I want that in the fundamentals of beginning my skating journey and sticking with it! Thank you so much!!!!!!
I hope you know what an amazing teacher you are when it comes to skating! I just started like 3 days ago, and I’m already feeling more steady (and I’ve even skated backwards!) thanks to your videos! I don’t think I’m ready for a rink and being around a bunch of people yet.. but I’m going to try and practice for at least 10-20 min a day and keep using your tips to improve my balance. Thank you!
I am so excited for you! Good luck to you at the start of this amazing journey. You will have many ups and downs, literally and figuratively, so lace up and get ready to roll!
Dirty, Dirty, Dirty!!! You are such an amazing Therapist! I absolutely love your videos. They ALWAYS make me want to get out there and work even harder. I am 62 going on 35, LOL, And love roller skating more than ever. Thank you for being you…You’re the best!
Well I was not expecting that!(in a good way!) To be honest, I thought this was going to be about rink etiquette or something. Thank you for the inspirational message!! You are the best🙌🏻
It feels good to hear that being stuck with transitions ! Thank you so much for your amazing work, empathy, teaching skills, humor ans energy. Best wishes from France.
I've gotten worse!!! I've had surgery. And now I'm so afraid to fall!!! Skating in Norway is always a struggle. No indoors arenas just rough asphalt outside. I found a parking house. Skated there a few evenings - really late. (Most parking garages are locked after hours here). There was nobody there. I did not bother anybody. I didn't disturb at all. Suddenly this gurd person stopped me and told me to get the h.... out!!! So at nearly 60 years old I was kicked out. I asked if he wanted to arrest me, but he was just rude... That's how things are here. Back to my small living room floor... No wonder my progress is slow... Love and light form snowy Norway.
as a beginner skater, i don't feel comfortable enough with speed. i wanna focus on my balance and control. felt like i'm getting in the way of people who wants to swoosh through the rink :( i wish i could enjoy it as much as others do
This is pretty shocking for some reason. I spent the first year + skating just practicing foundational basics. There were not really UA-cam videos and I didn’t know this channel existed until I had been learning for over a year. Then I started watching specific videos to improve my basics. Now basics are very firm and natural so I can gradually learn other skills. There are not even skating instructors here, as all rinks had been closed for a long time, so I always practiced outside or sometimes in my kitchen, but it’s a very tiny area. It’s true, the basics are necessary. Omg I so relate to that point about the point you are at too - when I first started, I was so terrified of skating over uneven/cracked/pebbly parking lots from my car to outdoor trails. So then I realized I had to really drill the basics in a place I could be as comfortable as possible, like smooth tennis courts or basketball courts. & then eventually worked on getting over rough terrain and how to make myself as stable as possible when the ground is very uneven. I have actually found that learning to skate, especially the intense balance work it is, has improved my balance everywhere else too. Now because of roller skating, I have taken up ice skating and found I can actually do it when I literally have never ice skated successfully before now at 32. Ice skating feels more difficult in some ways, but mostly the same skills translate really nicely. Even just the knowledge of how to fall properly makes everything else a lot less scary. Anyway, really enjoys your videos and 100% no pressure to always be posting new videos or anything. You have made so many already, I feel like anyone could just go back to an older one and work on a skill they haven’t mastered. Everything else is extra!
Sat in the car for almost 2 hrs with anxiety over skating outside. Everyday it gets better!! Everyday I get more into it! I love this video! It’s okay to be where your at! Enjoy the process!
When I read "Disrespectful" I thought of the squirrels that change direction abruptly without looking and the ones that stay on the floor during the fast skate but can't participate.
I really needed to hear this. Thank you so much for this. I keep getting frustrated with myself for not being better by now after three months of not skating because I had to recover.
"If you're still getting with transitions but there was a point where you couldn't even get out of your car in the parking lot and put your skates on because you had so much anxiety but you did it anyway, this is where you're at!" Made me tear tf up!! I remember going to the rink alone for the first time and hyping myself up to go inside for like 15 minutes and finally doing it. Skating is such a beautiful journey that challenges us, and sometimes the challenge is accepting where you are and ENJOYING it. (^':
In skate when y was a child and right now(41 years old). Take clases of artístic skate for gain more confidence, I practice and y love how im feel when go to skate whit my family. They came whith me and skate too. Love it! Sorry for my english🙈. Kisses from Argentina 🛼🛼🛼🛼
Thank you! I was a disrespectful skater when I started last year, and ended up breaking my ankle. After 12 weeks of healing, I joined a beginner class with a bunch of kids and a few friends, because I didn't want to be afraid of skating and give up. I am so glad I did.
As an old lady who started in a figure and dance club decades ago, then quit had a family etc. but still love to skate...I would suggest figure basics. You know drills of figure 8s... these will improve your balance and edges and I would love to have a place to do this but our rink is toooooo crowded. I'm betting a good chunk of folks never learned basic drills and may find them boring, but like in music you practice scales and other basics so when you put it all together, it's muscle memory! I can't shoot the duck anymore, bad hips and knees. Broke my elbow on a fall with the grandkids. Best time I had since my hubby had passed 4 mos. earlier. It hurt but I held it in position and we kept skating. There were 2 hrs left of our session!!! Good think I told one of them to bring their license in case she had to drive us home. Then I bought some outdoor skates, Moxie Panthers. Skated in the house to get the feel of that extra grip etc. Tried to kick a rug out of the way. Fell and landed on that same elbow. Fast forward. I've had the new skates nearly a year and I'm afraid to use them! I found out that I have osteopenia, the precursor to osteoporosis. I just need to find a nice place I can skate alone and not trip over kids or twigs.
Definitely get protective equipment; elbow, knee, and wrist guards. I’m 42 and I wear them religiously; I don’t need an injury to become a life-long issue. Does your rink offer lessons? Maybe see if they would recommend a certain time & day when the rink is less crowded. I take lessons at a rink before they open to everyone else so it’s much less crowded so I can work on things without those distractions. Kids can kill ya! 🤣 I started my lessons with a figure skating coach and I really appreciate the emphasis on balance and foot placement; it has made a huge impact on my skating.
🌸 Thanku Dirty Debra, I really want to improve, not be scared and be able to skate smooth (especially backwards) not be so robotic or awkward (fear is my worst enemy but am working on it and yesterday watched your video with Kim on how to Fall, this will help big time)... love all your videos ... with practice I will eventually get there 🌸 love and hugs from Newcastle NSW Australia 🇦🇺..Di 57yr 💜💜
Whoooooweeeeee ! Ha i was not going to watch this figuring it didn't apply to me, well now wake-up call. Thank you for laying the smack down of what is important and I be one that is guilty of wanting to just move on to the next dance or trick with perfecting what I "can do" and putting my heart and soul into it with my style. Ita a new day and a new outlook on skating.
This is so true! Nowadays everything seems to get faster and faster. Only with the goal in mind and without enjoying the journey. I guess we all fall into this trap from time to time. I discovered skating in a TV series years ago (I live in a country without any skating rink so I basically didn't know the sport) and this year I finally had the courage to get my first skates. The reason I wanted to do this is just for fun and the feeling. Not for crazy stunts.
LOVED! LOVED! Skating has been the most amazing hobby for my self confidence, respect, mental health and self worth. Every time I get on my skates there's a new victory. I can see and feel the improvement every time I leave the rink. In a life ruled by uncertainty and the feeling of being behind everyone else, skating is a world in which you're celebrated for every improvement and I cannot express how life changing it is.
Amen.

What's this Dirty?
Same for me love! I find myself skating as often as I can!!! Mother of 5 girls, married! I need my skate time
"Nobody starts skating and then just gets WORSE!"
SO true! You can always get better at something!
Truth!!!!!
The best thing I ever did as a skater was decide to enjoy being hella mediocre. But I'm getting there and having the time of my life. (Deb, you have a huge hand in that.) Thank you for being you always.
Put a little feeling into those mediocre moves and you got something there ;)

It's so true that you can't get worse at skating. I could hardly balance on my skates a few weeks ago. Now I can confidently skate across my dorm room without grabbing a bedpost for dear life.
Exactly my story! First lap around parking spots worrying for my life, and now? there is no car around? lets go few faster ones :-D (Still sometimes fight for life (with myself), but a lot of fun doing that)...
That's awesome! I started a week ago and today I finally felt confident on my skates too. A bit wobbly, but gaining confidence. Keep up the great work you're doing ☺️
Pbft. I could skate great as a child. When I laced up last year I fell every single day. Def got worse. 🤣🤣🤣
I think that’s really important. Do it for the way it makes u feel not because of people might think or just to show off.
Spitting facts!! A lot of beginners trick chase like “On to the next!” when they don’t look that great doing something they think is simple. Like giiirrll 😒
Exactly!!
Yes! Thank you!
@@Dirtydeborahharry Thank you.
oh you know it. Watching someone getting totally into their music and into their skate vibe is awesome.
I feel you I’m 326, 5’11 and 32 and just started in December with quad skates but my 11 year old is pro like on rollerblades
❤❤❤ Happy skating to you too!!!
❤❤❤
Enjoy 😻
@@Leo-Nee omg I used to love to skateboard 😂 I’m definitely getting back out there
@@LisaLisaCJ Hahaaaaa that’s cool! You’ll have to let me know how you go.
I just got home from a skate. It was awesome & I’ve progressed so much in just one practice session.
They’ve got the local roller derby muster tomorrow. I might pop in for a look. Why not right? What have I got to lose 😝👍
Preach it Sister! God bless you!
“RESPECT!”
Awwww thank you!
I think a lot of tricks seem to come naturally when the fundamental skills are good enough to just FLOW.
I still watch your basic videos to build on my skills, even the older ones. I hear you saying “don’t try to upgrade” whenever I try to move on without nailing the fundamentals. Thank you for your videos. 🥰
Great to hear!
Folks ! Yall need to sit down be quiet and soak up game that dirty is serving up for free...
And also be thankful 🙏
Thank you so much!!!
Disrespectful, YES...This is what I call the 'arrogant' skater! Right On, thanx for delivering this message ✌💛🛼
I am honored.
❤❤❤
Oh, Dirty, you wonderful human being. Thank you for this. Skating has definitely made me a happier and more confident person in all areas of my life. And your lessons helped me to get the courage to try it.
This makes me feel so good because I love practising the stuff I already know. I love going backwards and making it look 💯
I love being able to go forward and transition smoothly but that's not enough for some people.
Awesome topic Deb!
Thank you for the encouragement and inspiration, Dirty!! ❤❤❤
You are so 😁
Deb, you are such an amazing teacher and motivator. Please never stop making these great videos. I love every single one.
Thank you❤️
That is awesome!
Your the best teacher ever. Don't let the disrespect get to you.
Yessss! 💥 Great reminder!!!!! Dropping that wisdom like BAM!
I appreciate that!
This is exactly what I needed to hear. You are so dead on with this one. Skating is a journey, I would rather progress slowly and cultivate basics. There will be plenty of time to look good on the rink floor! You are amazing! New subscriber and student here for all of it!
I'm here for this Dirty!! 👏👏👏
You would be amazed how many "mature" skaters are still rolling. They are lifelong skaters who never stopped doing the "basics".
Then, pretty much my entire life turned upside down:
- I came out of an 8 year relationship
- I got a major shift in my job/career
- I moved out from living with my partner
And skating was all I had left.
This video is 🔥! Such great advice! Thank you for all you do, Deborah!! I'm enjoying my journey! Hugs!!
Awesome advice and wisdom their Deborah, thank you for that.
You are so welcome!
This was AMAZINGLY right on time, on SO many levels❤️❤️❤️Thank you
"Work on those essential skills until they feel amazing!"
Truth!
If you can spin left, work on spinning right!
I feel like you know when to level up when you don't have to think about moves and your body just does them on its own from your own natural artistic flow.
Thank you vídeo Deborah.
Nicely timed video. this is the real talk I NEEDED TO HEAR! you’re the best.
THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS APPLYING THIS SPEECH ABOUT SKATING TO EVERY GROWTH AREA OF MY FREAKING LIFE!
My Goodness!
I imagine this would make me into a great man.
encouraging wisdom.
magnifique.
tres tres tres

Yes!! I skate for fun, for the feeling. Learning a trick is a bonus, I just put my skates on to feel the wind in my hair!
Wow, thank you!!!!!
Thank you for the reminder!
Awwww damn! Keep shining my skater friend. You will find your place.
Watching you skate backwards is so soothing to me! 😂 just watching those skates move smoothly. So weird but I love it!
This video is all FACTS!! Still practicing the essentials and I always see some progress when I come back to them!
This wonderful advice applies to absolutely every sport. : )
💯💯💯💯💯😩🎉 Say it louder!
People wanna check boxes and take the quickest route.. ppl got the idea that doing the move is the same as doing it GOOD
This is such a great video!! These words have touched my soul so deep, I was crying(good tears).
Thank you for this! I skate to feel better, not feel more frustrated. This was a great reminder.
as a beginner skater, i don't feel comfortable enough with speed. i wanna focus on my balance and control. felt like i'm getting in the way of people who wants to swoosh through the rink :( i wish i could enjoy it as much as others do
This is pretty shocking for some reason.
Awwwww yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Deborah!! You are an inspiration, you are a great person. The one and only, I will always say it.
When I read "Disrespectful" I thought of the squirrels that change direction abruptly without looking and the ones that stay on the floor during the fast skate but can't participate.
Always with the messages I need to hear 😊
Thank you for this priceless advice! This is the root of all of my problems it seems.
This made me shed TEARS AMAZING 👏 THANK YOU WE LOVE YOU
Thank you! I was a disrespectful skater when I started last year, and ended up breaking my ankle. After 12 weeks of healing, I joined a beginner class with a bunch of kids and a few friends, because I didn't want to be afraid of skating and give up. I am so glad I did.
I respect you for coming back!
This is so good...thanks Deb. Get it.
AMAZING lesson and reminder Dirty ❤ sending you love from Wisconsin! Gonna go practice tonight with my skate besties
Well, I am happy for all your teaching. Thanks for always being willing to give us tips. It’s a fun journey to re-learn how to skate.
I'm just still starting out I am a slow learner!! Thank you 😊 💓
🌸 Thanku Dirty Debra, I really want to improve, not be scared and be able to skate smooth (especially backwards) not be so robotic or awkward (fear is my worst enemy but am working on it and yesterday watched your video with Kim on how to Fall, this will help big time)... love all your videos ... with practice I will eventually get there 🌸 love and hugs from Newcastle NSW Australia 🇦🇺..Di 57yr 💜💜
This is gold !
You are so welcome!
I didn’t even realise how disrespectful I have been but you opened my eyes thank you!
