Don’t attack Russia in the winter, unless you’re the mongols then you wait until winter so those bogs and marshes that kept them safe became a highway for their horses
It has been a couple of "busy" months so I have not watched an "In Deep Geek" since early November. What a delight to get back into Game of Thrones (apparently a medieval documentary - who woulda thunk?) with my favorite show. Thank you so very much for these nice long immersions in the story--I love the North and the characters it involves. I enjoy reading the comments here and the live-stream comments as well. Always the best.
I just saw the ravens at the Tower of London last year... they're crazy birds. They hop around and interact with tourists/visitors like pigeons in San Francisco. And they're HUGE birds. I mean, not like eagles or something, but I got up close to one sitting on a waste basket/garbage can inside the Tower grounds, and it was easily the size of a cat perched there. Totally fearless around humans, too. There are similar birds all around Stonehenge, though I don't think they're as protected, large, or friendly as the Tower ravens. Just...you go walk around there, and there are these huge blackbirds cawing and hopping around the grass and the huge stones. It's a lot of fun to see.
"Rob had snow melting in his hair" and Jon Snow as his heir. I've been intrigued by GRRM writing this about Rob several times. I'm thinking it predicts Robs death and maybe Jon's accention as Rob's heir...?
2:09:00 How The Others get on the other side of The Wall: Unless the magical barrier is broken, not through the Black Gate at the Nightfort. Cold Hands told Sam he could not come through with them because of the magical barrier. And Cold Hands is some kind of Ice Wight even if he isn't under the control of The Others. And if the magical barrier is broken it doesn't really matter - they can climb over like ants making a bridge or whatever.
I think that if everything worked out for Robb as far as He and Renly coming to an agreement that saw Renly ruling the 6 Kingdoms with the North regaining its Sovereignty and Robb remaining the King in the North, with the obvious exception of freeing Ned, that Robb would have legitimized Jon no matter whether Jon stayed with the Nights Watch after his murder or not.
While I don't think it's a direct correlation, the idea of the merging of the swords to bring Ice back reminds of Sansa a bit. She's the one character, particularly the only Stark, who's getting a real look at all the different methods of playing the game. She's seen her father, Robert, Tywin, Tyrion, Cersei, Joffrey, Baelish, Varys, etc. to varying degrees. She's seeing what works and what doesn't. She's seen where going to far in any direction can lead to suffering. A ruler needs some honor, some charisma, some ruthlessness, some analytical thinking, some sneakiness, some manipulation, etc. When you look at how Vary describes a "good king", he seems to actually leave out some of the duplicity that he's actually been using to get (F)Aegon on the throne.
3:10:35 - The mention of Harrenhal here made me think... Maybe the reason why Harrenhal has been described as so massive by George is in part because in the very final chapters of the story it will be described as basically filled to the brim with all of the lords of the land in the biggest great council the world has ever seen.
Rickon might be a more powerful greenseer than Bran, but because he was allowed to "run wild" as a child he has a hard time governing his emotions / actions. It's possible that Bloodraven did try to communicate with Rickon as he communicated with Bran, but maybe Bloodraven recognized that it would be too difficult to get Rickon "on board" with all the change that would be necessary to become the "new Bloodraven" so he chose Bran instead.
Asa proud Mancunian, I think my biggest disappointment with GoT is that years after initial UK broadcast, there is still no Northern Independence Movement lol.
On the topic of Cat Stark: I think it would actually be quite interesting if, a ways further down the line in the story, we saw Cat try to do something vengeful toward Jon again. By that I mean that she's now this being driven by vengeance for those who've wronged her family, and in her mind Jon was always the symbol of the first wrong against her family. At some point most of the people Cat would want vengeance against are going to be dealt with anyway (many of them at Winterfell) and since the Others are likely to make it past Winterfell, it makes sense that Jon will eventually need to move southward, potentially opening him up to being the target of Lady Stoneheart's anger. If Lady Stoneheart were to make a move against Jon that had some kind of unintended side-effect that turned out out to help Jon, it would put a new light on Ned's decision not to tell her. Bringing this conflict to the forefront of the story one last time would be an interesting way to close down the Lady Stoneheart plotline. In giving Jon a chance to wonder if he should mourn her and to see what happened to her, it'd also give him a very "human heart in conflict with itself" kind of moment where he grapples with deeply mixed feelings of resentment, and pity, and recognition that she was still the mother and protector of the siblings he dearly loves. Perhaps even Jon has to kill her, and so he's left wrestling with really difficult feelings about whether he should be happy that he was able to personally strike down this woman who tormented him or if he's grown to the point where he sees a larger picture and mourns how much she suffered along the way. It would also bring a new level of meaning to the fact that Beric gave his life up for her, because there's certainly a pretty strong implication that something very special was going on with Beric's continued life, and it seems like the best way of making that threat in the plot fully satisfying would be for it to ultimately lead back to something that has an impact on Jon's plot. Done right, bringing that together strikes me as an opportunity for something profoundly bittersweet, so it seems like a place GRRM might be interested in going depending on how his other story threads are laid out.
1:31:55 - If I had to guess it's less well-garrisoned during times of peace because it doesn't have a town or other population hub nearby and as such it would probably be a nightmare, and very expensive, to supply it throughout the year during peace time.
I would disagree with the thought process that Rickon and Osha would not engage with the Skagosi. I would agree that they would TRY to not engage. However, when Bran traveled North through the territories of the clansmen, they literally met a man-at-arms for a Liddle and a point was made that they knew they were being watched going to the Wall. The Skagosi would surely be just as knowledgeable about new visitors, especially one with a giant back dire wolf. How much contact? Osha's interest would be as little as necessary, but that really becomes the Skagosi's prerogative, doesn't it? No idea what that would be, there just isn't any information on Skagos other than in legend. Multiple territories of the north have shown some loyalty, maybe Skagos does too.
What if Mance finds Rhaegers harp? A nice chord echoing from its’ strings and the wall gently rumbles down.....just amusing myself but Mance may realize Jon’s true identity
One thing I haven’t heard someone talk about is the STRONG chance that Tywin Lannister knew who really killed Joffery. We all know Tyrion didn’t do it and we k ow Tywin isn’t a stupid man, I don’t see him being so easily fooled and not crossing all Ts and dotting all i’s and just believing it was Tyrion because his grieving daughter thought so. I think Tywin knew who did it and. Let it happen because Joffery was an issue due to the fact he was INSANE!!! So as he mentioned “the king is tired” lol. Can you or Grey Area explore this a little more
I think Robert said in one of his livestreams that yes, he thinks LS will reunite with at least one of her daughters, because it would make a lot of sense for her revenge-driven plot to end with her realising that not all of her kids are dead like she thought
@@samuelleask1132 I kind of hope she doesn't because it would be heartbreaking for any child to see their mother animated as a rotting, undead zombie. IMO it would be better for them to just remember her as she was when she was alive. But I can totally see GRRM having that happen because he loves the tragic and horrific.
The horrific irony would be if she encounters her child and refuses to believe it's her child and instead insists that it's some kind of trick from a Lannister imposter or such and tries to have them killed. It would definitely be the Stephen King thing to do to have the wraith kill her own child because she can't evolve beyond her hatred.
Tolkiens take on allegory is kind of extreme. It's not just pessimistic its an opinion that actively assumes if you're writing allegory you're manipulating the reader. That's just simply not true. Tolkien can't know the the intent of every individual who used or will use allegory.
Does the Riverland characters move north or does the story head to the gods eye? I assume Sansa will take KOTV to winterfel but the bwob and blackfish seem like they join up at some point too I go back and forth about what would be cooler. Seeing blackfish beside Jon to take back the north would be cool as shot though. .
Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt was in December 1967. Disappeared of Cheviot beach, fairly close to where I live. Lots of silly conspiracy theories but even more surrounding the sacking of PM Whitlam just 8 years later.
I'm not sure if you'd want to be in white harbor a thousand years before the series considering I'm pretty sure the manderlys have only been there for like 900.
Anyone know if House Karstark has any named bannermen houses? House Glover has a number of houses mentioned that are sworn to them as does House Manderly, but I can't seem to recall any mentioned for House Karstark
If Rickon has "greenseer" abilities I would think he would know his own danger from the Bolton's. This is the ONE character I think GRRM is way to dismissive of.
my opinion about things next to hapend in the books....battle of ice will be won by stanis with help of the manderlys and also they will go in winterfel in the same way roose bolton go in harenhal ...stanis wil be false prisoner of the manderlys, once inside the walls of winterfel the slaugther begin and stanis take winterfel butt ramsay will run.the news of rickon return gonna spread, jaimie lanister gonna trade podrik and ser hyle for the northmen prisoners from the red wedding who he ask from the freys and after go with brienne in the north to help jon snow. rickon will die soon by the hand of ramsay butt he also gonna be killed by sansa in her way to winterfel because she will go help her little brother she will rally the vale and riverlands with her uncle blackfish.
One of the problems I have with the "the Starks are all gone" idea is...is that realistic? This house is 10,000+ years old. There are named cadet branches, like the Greystarks and the Karstarks. Seriously, House Stark has come down to Ned's children, and no one else? Ned's great-great-great grandfather didn't have any heirs who had heirs down to the present day? This stuff can get really complicated, and GRRM was obviously well aware of that--the Blackfire stuff is the result of multiple claims of legitimacy in succession rights where the laws are murky... just look at the multiple claims coming down to today of who the current Czar of Russia should be. It just seems to me that it's really weird that after Arya, there are no cousins or nieces or nephews who'd be next in line. And what happens if Sansa actually does marry Tyrion, and produces an heir? Isn't that heir a Lannister? So then the Stark name fades into obscurity with the Lannister line ruling two of the 7 kingdoms? Seems hard to imagine the northern lords standing for that, though maybe they don't have a lot of choices...
Well neds family is all gone? Benjen nightswatch (prob undead), brandon and Lyanna killed. So technically no cousins? Was there no mention of his fathers siblings?
Im only 9 minutes in so far so forgive me if this was asked or addressed. But when Stannis attacks Winterfell, who's POV chapter will this be in? I dont think George would seriously kill off Stannis off page. Could we possibly see a Stannis POV?

I knit as well. Sometimes I listen whilst brewing komucha!
You, sir, have an incredible speaking voice. Thank you for sharing it so often with us, and for creating such consistently excellent content.
Leaving a comment for the algorithm! The more attention this wonderful channel can garner, the better!
I work for parks, so I'm landscaping and picking up trash while I listen. Thanks for the content. I intend to create some of my own soon.
