    I remember seeing this done on a show when I was a kid. I cant remember what show it was but what I can remember is my Mom Losing her shit after I cut up a bunch of glass underwater in the bathtub. Glass that was needed for something. She was right angry.

    I'm so glad I ran across this video. I have told people for YEARS that this was possible, because I had seen my step-dad do this when I was barely a teenager. He needed an oval piece of glass for a picture frame and this is exactly what he did.

    Yes this is an old trick my grandpa used to do. Best using 3mm float glass and cold water. He said it happened because the water dampened down the vibrations.
    Nice to know the REAL reason is chemical bonds!

      I did really poorly in all of my classes in high school. In college, things changed for the better, and then changed drastically after getting my first job. Turns out, I'm just a lot better with the application aspect than the theory. It has led me to do some pretty incredible stuff and given me a career I never thought would be attainable at one point. Don't give up my dude and focus on your strengths.

    Could you smooth out the edges of the circles with a metal file or rasp underwater too? Interested to know because I thought of some shapes of glass you have cut could be off by a small amount but with a file you could make the alterations needed.

      ​@IntelligentElephant I'm going to consider going and trying this. I'm a visual artist looking for a complimentary skill to not waste broken frame glass that I have, and kind of want to try assemble stained glass pieces with it, but have no glass tools.
      Perhaps later today I will be snipping it up in some water and hopefully able to clean the edges for leading together.

    My first thought was that the water dampened the vibrations of the glass which usually breaks the whole thing in air, similar like the vibrations of uncooked spaghetti causes it to break on several spots.

    For a while I worked in a glass cutting place where we made all sorts of far out glass furniture, tables mostly and aquariums too. We never knew to do this, or even the "spit on the cut line" trick!

    The thickness of the glass and the size of the scissors also could make some difference in cutting. It would worth a test.

    As a professional glazer and stained glass artist it hurts my soul to see him do this. Just use a 2 dollar glass cutter and some grozing pliers to do the same thing out of water with 1000% more accuracy, less mess, and a safer work environment. Besides that cool demo!

    I needed this info for a while now I can cut my truck mirrors with round edges , just by using the glass cutter with 2 millimetre extra depth on-top of the glass when it's submerged in water then go around and score it with rounded corners , that's the aim anyway.

    This is actually quite dangerous to do without gloves. The shards that come off can be extremely tiny and get into your pores the exact same way fiberglass insulation does.

    i needed to know this. something I will be using immediately. I have an old Zenith radio from the 1910's and the glass is missing. I have glass from a porthole style window, right from a hotel door that was made in the 1940's. This is amazing and actually useful for me; not just fun to watch :)

    Can you use the glass typically used in stained glass? It is a little thicker. Curves are very difficult in stained glass.

    I remember years ago seeing a documentary on the amazing things that the Allied prisoners of wars did while imprisoned by the Nazis. One was making compasses to help them find their way after escaping through their tunnels; they used this exact same water method to cut glass circles to make compasses from.

    The bottom line if you wanted to know :
    - It is called chemomechanical effect. The glass will crack if the scissor straight cutting the glass. But in the water, the water molecule enters to the glass molecule. It will make the glass soft so it wouldn't crack underwater.
    Sorry for my bad english, this theory actually from a comic book about science.
