William Aramony (July 27, 1927 - November 11, 2011) was CEO of United Way of America for more than twenty years and helped build the organization into the largest charity in the United States.[1] He retired in 1992 amid allegations of fraud and financial mismanagement, for which he was subsequently convicted and sentenced to prison.
@@elizabetholiviaclark at 19 yrs old I felt something was wrong when my employer Nordstrom had a mandated employee meeting where United Way conducted their slick campaign of theft by monthly auto paycheck deductions. Retail Union was involved. I said no and was shortly thereafter written up, demoted, lowered my wages and robbed me of my seniority. I eventually quit. Called the retail workers Union, since I was forced to pay them, and of course they did nothing.
I noticed several lavish lunch and dinner meetings on a local United Way Facebook page. That's not my idea of a good use of donations. Know a person who works their with quite the benefit package. I know most people work harder for less. Charity is for the less fortunate not those living large. I give directly to those who NEED. Many United Way workers are NOT volunteers! Maybe several large charities are more interested in lining their pockets than helping their cause!
Has United Way finally managed to hide it's rather checkered past? In the 1990's national United Way "leaders" were using donations as their private goodie bag to support, among other things, very young mistresses as I seem to remember...But then...It's always easier to get forgiveness that to ask permission to do that sort of thing. Like American Red Cross, no matter how much you donate, the agency itself seems to end up the ultimate winner...
Hi Janet Mackie - we encourage you to take a look at the Charity Navigator site which has a full transparent review of United Way Worldwide. We are listed as a 4-star charity, the highest rating. www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4629#.VDhT49R4oaU
How does United Way work to improve lives in over 1,800 communities across the world? Here's how: Waste a bunch of helium so you can pollute the entire area and waterways with balloons, balloons that you promised were biodegradable? Because, I mean, it worked out so well for you guys back in "86. Fuck You Guys !!!
I would never give to the United Way as only a small portion goes to help people, the Executive officer of the United Way makes $375,000.00 dollars a year plus lavish benefits that include a yacht plus numerious cars. Actually UNICEF and RED CROSS are the worst offenders of using the money we donate towards helping people. It's hard to believe this is even legal......
That's why I don't donate anything to anyone, sure, I feel bad for the children in third world countries,... but unless I hand it over in person, how do I know that's where my money is actually going? Sickening >>>
That might be true for this specific United Way but I know that it’s not true for every United Way so unless you know that for a fact don’t go around assuming, they actually do a lot of great things and help a lot of people.
Thank you for improving so many communites across the world.

Those were the years when they got a good chunk of my money, too.
