My main question is how reliable is it, as in its longevity? Historically all of my laptops have started experiencing problems around the 2 to 2.5 year mark after heavy daily use. I'm fine so long as it doesn't start breaking down in under two years.
I don't think it will at all, I've had an old dell g5 laptop for 4 years and it still runs good frames and works absolutely great for programming, video editing, and general browsing
tHis is a good general question. just recently a Asus Zephyrus G15 i had for a year crashed and shows no signs of life. most probably due to a power short in the motherboard. It was barely over a year. Would really like to evaluate reliability of these gaming laptops. Apparently the zephyrus line has got reliability issues basedoff repairs on youtube
If they're 14 inches or smaller, it makes sense, as there just wouldn't be enough room. But yeah, at 16 inches or bigger, it does make sense to have one.
Because it's a gaming laptop and you don't use the numpad for gaming that seems pretty obvious to me I'm not saying there wouldn't be nice to have it included but this is marketed as a gaming laptop not a work laptop and it's a budget model so they got to save money in some places and since the numpad is virtually useless for gaming that seems like a obvious cut
I didn't see that specified on the US product page, only for the Alienware stuff, but it wouldn't surprise me, they give random configs in different regions different stuff.
1.6kg for the charger! That is the same weight as a Zephyrus G14 by itself! But there is no need as it doesn’t have a 4080/90 and the i9 HX isn’t as powerful as other i9 HX laptops. Crazy man
Dell g16 or asus rog stix g16 ( i7 versions with rtx 4060 variants) which one is good for gaming and also for vedio editing and for content creation..please reply
I am so old I remember the times when Alienware was a brand on its own and Dell was competing with them with XPS line-up. At that time both companies had outstanding, appealing design. Now everything is so generic and dull...
Finally!!!!! After 3 months from purchase, I finally find a review from a big youtuber! I have the quantum white version. Its a fucking beast! 13650HX and 4060 works beautifully and is enough for my AI workload. Edit: Hold up! Why dont you have an option for 4080 in US? I saw this option in India. Edit 2: with the i7 13650HX and 4060 variant, they (Dell) mentioned element 31 compound is available. I bought it in India. Edit 3: Also thanks for including Ubuntu. I saw that they have G16 certified with Ubuntu and its good to know. I currently use Ubuntu for my work and its buttery smooth.
Was looking at this G16 for AI model too 😂 How about gpu driver on ubuntu ? Had some pains when auto updater broke my 7840Hs gpudriver on ubuntu 20.04 LTS
I got this laptop a month ago because ASUS Rog strix was out of stock in Delhi(India) and online. Though I got it a pretty good deal from Dell store. I hate the jumbo adapter. It's like carrying 2 laptops. The screen size is great and ventilation is quite good. It's my first gaming laptop. No numpad though:/. Would love to know some Alienware optimisation videos or tutorials. There's no SD card slot. Also looking for what additional SSDs and RAM brands should I prefer with this?
it looks like Dell really lowered the quality from the G7 15 7500 series. I have an OLED 4k screen and the build quality is superb. Very solid with no keyboard flex. Sad to see Dell lower the quality and remove cool features like multizone RGB lightning, OLED screen, Killer wifi, etc.
For those still looking at the G16. The $1949 version is currently in the states $1299. That's a very good price. No touch screen, but 240Hz, 13900HX (32 thread 5.4Ghz), 4070 (8GB), 32GB DDR5 (4800Mt), backlit keyboard. For the features, $1300 (~33% off) is a very good price, though still check their deal page at their link. There could another one also on a similar sale.
It was on sale for $1299 so I bought it. I also have XPS 17 with i9 9730. This G16 is WAY WAY faster than XPS!!!!! XPS was refurbished at $2700. So for half the price I got much better computer.
I had a g15 two-three years ago that did everything I needed for a decent price , 3 laptops later I should've just kept it. Now I'm looking at a G16 because my $1900 Alienware m16 ryzen has been so overrated, clunky and loud that I'm returning it
It is such a pain setting this up for peak performance. You have to really work it but this can put out some serious performance for a laptop of this type
Luckily I got the 4070 version of this laptop from work. It’s been really great and incredibly quiet when performing typical office work. Ramps up quick though when gaming! Still an awesome laptop.
@@rockybacigalupi444 It can get quite warm when gaming. With the fans on high, I would say it is on average around 80-90 but I can look at it tomorrow and get better numbers
Got mine delivered yesterday with the 4070, done all updates and there's massive stuttering in certain games, overwatch doesn't get above 110fps on low settings, no idea on the cause
I purchased G16 7630, it is worth for $1500 dollars, but I faced the following issues and I suggest all to go through it before purchasing this laptop. 1. Keyboard backlight issue- It stopped working after updating all drivers. It took me days to fix it. 2. Poor Dell Technical Support- they failed to resolve the above issue. They told that the keyboard and palmrest has to be replaced. 3. Poor thermal design 4. Bulky Charger 5. Loaded with Bloatware 6. No number keys in keyboard 7. Low quality/ performance SSD and RAM 8. Smaller touchpad compared to competitors. 9. Camera quality could be improved. 10. Dell could have improved it to a power efficient device to consume at least 100W less.
Tbh, most people that buy Dell laptops are more of a casual user and most likely they'll just go to the repair center to clean the fans and repaste thermal.
Why did they give it such a weird power budget? Like only 55ish watts to the CPU while both are being used? Come on, you are literally advertising a liquid metal + vapor chamber combo and you are still limiting power?
Hi, I just discovered your channel. 🙌🏻 Which one of these 4 options would you choose if you were me? Dec. Asus Rog G16 Rtx4060 FHD 512 GB for $1400, Asus Rog G16 Rtx4060 2K QHD 1 TB for $1650, Alienware M16 Rtx4070 2K QHD for $ 1900, Dell G16 Rtx4060 2K QHD 512 GB.
2.7kg for a 16 inch laptops. I wonder what kind of materials does Dell use for it to be so heavy. It's better to get a 17 inch laptops with good spec and just as similar performance. I would get this but that weight is throwing me off.
I was so happy to buy this computer because I thought, being a loyal Dell purchaser, this laptop was going to be the top of the line purchase. I AM severely dissatisfied and disappointed. Couldn't do a simple task without it overheating. Not even playing a game yet. Fan was replaced now making my $2000+ computer into a refurbished laptop. Now Dell offering to replace the motherboard. It may or may not resolve the issue. I'm making payments now on a refurbished machine. DELL was the brand I bought from for over 20 years. Very disillusioned. Most likely my last Dell machine.
Hey Jarrod thanks for the review! Do new laptops normally come with a back up USB boot/windows disk? As I have just ordered one and would like to put a larger SSD in it. Thanks!
Dell always offers discounts, friends and family, student, or you can just call in and they will take 5-20 percent off. Plus if you had a dell card already approved you would get 6-12 months interest free payments. Could be this, more than the actual product.
Hey Jarrod I got this laptop a couple months ago for 1350 with 4070, i9 13900hx, 16 gb ddr5, and qhd 165hz screen. Do you think this laptop is a good buy at 1350?
They send 195w to the 4070 Laptop GPU! Even though its rated 35w-115w they seriously over power it. (along with the integrated GPU) They can only do it because of improved cooling (using the Alien ware tech they acquired). You can use a more powerful power adapter than needed by 50% with no problems. in fact its better for the PSU will create less heat overall. Its only draws whats needed from it at any given moment. And dont forget it has USB Thunderbolt 4, PD3.1, 140w power delivery! You can charge something at 140 watts from the USB port so that power has to come from somewhere.
The day after I got this, the keyboard configuration disappeared from AWCC, and shortly after the keyboard backlight stopped turning on. I contacted dell but they basically said I’d have to send it in to be repaired… is there any other solution? It persisted even after reinstalling windows.
I think at that price (1949) for 4070 Asus m16 is a WAY better option. Btw when you mentioned that deal price for m16 its actually reminded me how BestBuy screwed me badly with that deal. I tried to buy that exact m16 at 1499 and I've ordered and paid it with my card, then 2 days later they just cancelled my order without explanation. At that point laptop has been sold out and I had 15 hours left before the end of the deal. I've spent HOURS with their support trying to get my order back and they offered to place a new order and when I said there is no laptop in stock they basically said well, suck to be you, wait until it will be in stock I even tried to go to the store and buy a unit on display but they REFUSED to sell it to me. And surprise-surprise as soon as the deal ended laptop appeared in stock again... I've never expected such scummy behaviour from such a big company, but oh well, live and learn.
Something also happened to me when buying the m16, I bought mine around mid august and felt a little dumb when 2 weeks after I saw it was on a lower price, it didn't make sense as the price was pretty low enough, so maybe they just got it wrong and tried correcting it later by doing what they did to you
@@trademarktmel thing is, I was in a hurry, since I had only a month window to buy a laptop in the US and they managed to screw me over for a second time with another laptop! I've spent an entire month trying to buy any laptop I liked and withing my budget and got absolutely nothing. And the whole time I've been dealing with their support team which was really expirienced in one thing - WASTING MY GODDAMN TIME that was infuriating to say the least
I have the G16 with an i9 13900hx and the temperatures will range from 90-100 degrees Celsius when gaming... is this something I should get fixed right away or is this okay to leave alone?
Would love to have a best Linux gaming laptop video. Pop OS should be the best candidate since it installs Nvidia drivers by default. Installing Linux as dual boot Running steam games to see performance difference with Windows Battery test Which features don't work on vanilla Linux Ofc there are other softwares to optimize like Gwen for Nvidia settings but that's up to the user to use it or not
I can give a brief rundown on what the best gaming laptop is for Linux: For 2022, that was hands down the Legion 7 2022 (the AMD Advantage model) with an Intel Wi-Fi card (the one I got in my unit was REALLY bad on Windows and didn't work in Arch). The battery life is quite good with the screen at 60 hz (the Fn + R shortcut for setting the screen resolution doesn't work in Linux because it's using a Windows API) and performance mode on Quiet (Fn + Q to change between the 3 main performance modes still works). For this year, you're kind of out of luck, as I couldn't find a brand with AMD Advantage and more than 8 GB of vRAM. And the options with Nvidia GPUs and 16 : 10 screens seem to be M.I.A., at least for laptops with Linux out of the box. Personally, if you can deal with no DLSS and CUDA, and you're fine with no more than 8 GB of vRAM for now, the Framework Laptop 16 is probably your best option at the moment, even if you'll have to be put on a queue to get it. It has no Nvidia GPU nonsense, it officially supports Ubuntu (23.10 and later, but not 22.04) and Fedora (39 and later), but it should work with almost any Linux distro if you know what you're doing, and it fully supports right to repair, even allowing for an unreal amount of upgradability. Literally the only complaint I think I'll have with it (apart from no Nvidia option), is the lack of storage expansion, as if you want dual-sided SSD support, you're limited to just one internal SSD, or two (one M.2 2280 and one 2230) with single sided SSDs. If you want to dual boot on a laptop that came with Windows out of the box, try to get one with two SSD slots. Otherwise, partitioning one drive for users newer to Linux can be dangerous for your data already on the drive. *TL;DR: Get the Framework Laptop 16 if you can wait for Q1 2024. If you can't or need Nvidia support (for CUDA or DLSS), then IDK.* (The Razer Blade 14 and Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 this year didn't have working speakers and I couldn't get them to work no matter what I did, so they went back.)
Picked up a 4060 & i7 combination for casual use for $850 due to Labor Day sale… crazy how quickly price decreased. Very reasonable now in any case and am looking forward to getting hands on with it for Diablo 4 and Call of Duty when traveling… should be more than capable.

to be fair, they ARE durable, even if they have their problems. I got a g7 in 2018, and this beast is what I'm typing this comment on with 13 A/V loaded tabs up, discord, and BOTW running in the background. This is 4 falls, two major skateboard accidents (pc in bag, i Landed on my bag), and one Really Bad Software Year (I got really good at doing my own IT work, though) later. She has both given me many a problem (always software), and let me run NOAA's outdated and non-optimized graphing and the absolutely MASSIVE CSV files I had to analyze in college (As in, my professor told us "your laptops are not going to be able to do this kind of work so you NEED to come into lab", and me and my MSI using roomate would pull up to lab with our PCs and have the work half completed) while having nearly a hundred tabs open for a research project. this PC has gotten me through a LOT and she's still going strong. sure, some of the software issues (wifi connection and broken audio drivers) were nightmarish to fix, but ultimately didn't affect the function of the pc much when I could use a bluetooth wifi connection or ethernet hookup. Five years old almost to the day and I love this little beast.
I recently just bought one and did a cinebench run and got 25500ish points in Performance mode so guess they fixed the power issues, and with custom mode with the tiny undervolt they allow I got 26628

Just got G16 12th Gen i7/1TB/16GB/RTX3060/Thunderbolt for $799 at Microcenter.
Why do some gaming laptops do not have a numpad? I feel dumb
Why would you need a number pad on a gaming laptop? To do some accounting work?
If they're 14 inches or smaller, it makes sense, as there just wouldn't be enough room. But yeah, at 16 inches or bigger, it does make sense to have one.
@MnemonicCarrier some people work remote lol
Because it's a gaming laptop and you don't use the numpad for gaming that seems pretty obvious to me I'm not saying there wouldn't be nice to have it included but this is marketed as a gaming laptop not a work laptop and it's a budget model so they got to save money in some places and since the numpad is virtually useless for gaming that seems like a obvious cut
You got used to productivity /cheap laptops
Vapor Chamber and Element 41 are included on the RTX 4070 models
I didn't see that specified on the US product page, only for the Alienware stuff, but it wouldn't surprise me, they give random configs in different regions different stuff.
1.6kg for the charger! That is the same weight as a Zephyrus G14 by itself! But there is no need as it doesn’t have a 4080/90 and the i9 HX isn’t as powerful as other i9 HX laptops. Crazy man

Yup. Though, after the update, it was improved this year.
it looks like Dell really lowered the quality from the G7 15 7500 series.

2.7kg for a 16 inch laptops. I wonder what kind of materials does Dell use for it to be so heavy. It's better to get a 17 inch laptops with good spec and just as similar performance. I would get this but that weight is throwing me off.

That is not correct, 195w is for the CPU, it’s shown on the website.

I've spent HOURS with their support trying to get my order back and they offered to place a new order and when I said there is no laptop in stock they basically said well, suck to be you, wait until it will be in stock
I even tried to go to the store and buy a unit on display but they REFUSED to sell it to me.
And surprise-surprise as soon as the deal ended laptop appeared in stock again...
I've never expected such scummy behaviour from such a big company, but oh well, live and learn.
Something also happened to me when buying the m16, I bought mine around mid august and felt a little dumb when 2 weeks after I saw it was on a lower price, it didn't make sense as the price was pretty low enough, so maybe they just got it wrong and tried correcting it later by doing what they did to you
If you aren't in a hurry, you're welcome to wait for it to go back on sale, it tends to happen every two weeks or so

Would love to have a best Linux gaming laptop video. Pop OS should be the best candidate since it installs Nvidia drivers by default.
Installing Linux as dual boot
Running steam games to see performance difference with Windows
Battery test
Which features don't work on vanilla Linux
Ofc there are other softwares to optimize like Gwen for Nvidia settings but that's up to the user to use it or not
I can give a brief rundown on what the best gaming laptop is for Linux:
For 2022, that was hands down the Legion 7 2022 (the AMD Advantage model) with an Intel Wi-Fi card (the one I got in my unit was REALLY bad on Windows and didn't work in Arch).
If you can't or need Nvidia support (for CUDA or DLSS), then IDK.*
(The Razer Blade 14 and Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 this year didn't have working speakers and I couldn't get them to work no matter what I did, so they went back.)

to be fair, they ARE durable, even if they have their problems.
