    Jimmy, You must learn to slice these low shots. With slice the racquet face is slightly open at contact. This will give you net clearance and allow you to get under these low balls. With slice you'll have a lot of options as well, such as drop shot, deep, short angle. All the best, Tom

    That was really helpful. Your points about focus on a couple of things and having the ball bounce twice was good. I have not been using the wall as effectively as I can. Thank you.

    Tom, yes, I’ve used the wall with almost all my students for 20 ears and I speak to many coaches about the benefits. I’m former ATP Tour coach and USTA HP trained and I can’t inagine a great tennis program without a warm-up wall. Thanks for the great video.

    Yes I noticed I have an easier time returning low shots with a double hand backhand. I find it easier to bend my knees low for that. for whatever reason, bending low for a forehand shot is very tricky for me. My positioning gets screwed up and my shot looks all weird. Maybe because for the double backhand I have a closed posture that makes it more natural to bend more? I'll do a bit more experiments this weekend. lots to learn.

  • @pereyraeduardo5m
    @pereyraeduardo5m 11 років тому +1

    so, when the ball is low and close to the net you have 2 obstacles: the height of the net and the length of the court. your shot has to be high enough for it to surpass the net and then it has to land inside the court. you should practice getting really low with your lower body, bending the knees a lot and then when making contact use that knee bend to generate a low-to-high movement, so that your shot has height and some topspin so that the ball can land inside. its all about your feet

    Hi Tom,
    I am Ahmed from Egypt , I am 47 years old & I started playing in the veterans tournaments . First of all thank you so much for your precious tennis lessons that I keep on watching every time I have an important match & now I need to ask you for what shall do when facing an opponent who is always one to two steps inside the court with an excellent volley as he jeopardises me running after his balls from the far right to the far left of the court while he remains standing in his place in the centre of the court knowing that my strokes are spins but not as accurate as his . Shall I hit flat strokes to be faster or what shall I do . Thank you in advance .

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  9 років тому +1

      +Ahmed Salah Sounds like you're up against a formidable player. First of all your groundstrokes need to land deep, as close to the baseline as possible to prevent your opponent from stepping inside the court. When he does step inside try sending back a high deep lob or hit your topspin dipping at his feet. If you can hit flat with some accuracy try moving him around. All the best, Tom

    What should be minimum distance between wall and your position

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  5 років тому +2

      Try to get back far enough so the ball can bounce twice before you hit... this gives you time to focus on the stroke... anywhere from 30-40 feet if possible.
      To your tennis success,
      Tom

    Hi Tom,
    My tennis partner hits me these ridiculously low flat balls with no power. The ball is literally less than a foot from the ground. Now I use semi-western grip, and there is no room for me to get under the ball. How do I return these ridiculous shots?

    Hi Tom ... thanks for the video. I have a question regarding wall practice in
    racquetball courts. It's winter and tough to get outdoors to hit but I
    have access to a racquetball court at the gym. What stuff can I do in
    there ? Wondering what your thoughts are. I know its not ideal but anything I can still work on ?

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  8 років тому

      If it's a hardwood floor it will be very fast off the bounce..... you'll REALLY have to be prepared early... good practice!!

    Quality video! Just a question, is it better to hit groundstrokes on the wall on the 1st or 2nd bounce like you showed on the vid? And I cant quite get the volley thus i usually end up doing half volleys.. how do i fix the volleys? Btw 100th comment xD

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  4 роки тому +2

      Two bounces gives you more time to really dial in on your technique if you need to improve that. One bounce you've got to turn the shoulders quickly so it helps you with quick preparation. As far as volleys go you must stand close and take a very short backswing to make it work... think quick.
      To your tennis success,
      Tom

    He has this bad habit of lifting his right foot (4:24) on forehand and his left (5:08) on backhand. Don't copy it, it costs you energy and power in play.

    • @Aaswing
      @Aaswing 6 років тому +1

      Sorry, but I completely disagree with you. Tom is doing it right. In modern tennis, you have to pivot off either foot to generate power or jump to pivot about your body. Go watch videos by David Bailey on footwork. You will see what I'm talking about.

      "Go For The Homerun" means you're not holding back.... many players hold back with their overhead smash they're not certain of the shot and have no confidence in the shot. "Going for the homerun is the opposite of that mentality.... you're swinging away with full confidence!
