Wow. This is one of the best, if not the best lesson I have seen or taken (virtually). Instant result. No double faults over a long set and a lot of pop in my serves.. Thank you again Tom.
Thank you, Tom. Your tip on loop toss really helped me with some recent more frequent double faults . . . b/c my toss had gotten a little less predictable esp with little higher toss than I should have. These have returned me to being a good server! Funny how "forgetting" a basic or two makes all the difference. Edw.
Really enlightening. Thanks Tom. I have successfully use your second serve technique. Will try this for my first serve: 1 o'clock; loop low toss; leaning into court; good flowing motion.
I was watching Nadal at the French open and noticed how low his toss was. His serving was unbelievable throughout the tournament and gave him a big advantage on the windy day against Federer. Another thing about the low toss is that I feel it takes time away from the returner. I really liked your tip about starting to swing when the ball leaves your hand.
Thanks for posting much appreciated!!! Start swinging as the ball leaves your hand a la Dustin Brown, Alexander Dolgopolov and Bryan Bros. To your tennis success, Tom

Yes I did enjoy that video, Tom you hit the nail on its head three times, thanks for great instruction reminder. You are a great tennis coach plus a great vegan.
Tom Avery Tennis - CTW Academy, I tried all the tips provided by you in such simple steps in your video. Believe me I am feeling so much more confident in hitting my first serve with consistency and more power than before in just few minutes. It did not took long for the people to get noticed and complemented by people who are seeing me hitting the courts almost every day and try to work on my first serve. All thanks to you Tom and your team to putting up so much hard work and sharing it for free at this platform. I hope you make video on topic mentioned by me in other videos posted by you. That will be of great help in improving my game and taking it to next level. Thanks once again.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tom, as I commented on another of your videos recommending a ball toss just to the height of your hitting reach, this won't work properly if you have a long serve backswing like, e.g. Federer (who has a good 2" ball drop). In the case of a "no drop toss", the timing is such that you will have to speed up a full-style backswing and this will cause unnecessary tension. As many coaches advise about the serve: start slowly and then speed up. I know in my case that if my toss doesn't drop 1"-2" my consistency goes out the window. I'm not advocating some of the sky-high ball tosses some players use, but unless you have an abbreviated serve backswing, a "no drop" toss may create problems.
Hi George, As I mentioned previously if it ain't broke don't fix it!! There are many ways to play and be successful...whether you hit the toss at the peak or your toss drops 1 - 2 inches, it's still considered a LOW TOSS , what I've found through my 40 years of coaching is that most players immediately improve when they lower the toss. To your tennis success, Tom
Tossing the ball to just the height of my reach is different from hitting the ball at that height. There usually is a time lag. I believe there's more than one way to hit an effective serve.
I'm struggling with my serve at the moment, finding I'm overthinking. I'll try these tips and let you know how it improves. Will start with practicing the throwing motion. Tx Tom
I think this video can be very helpful to a lot of recreational players, but in my opinion it's worth noting a few things: 1. a really high toss (ala Sharapova) is indeed a terrible idea for most players, but a really low toss (ala Kyrgios, Ivanisevic etc) can also cause a player to rush the motion TOO MUCH, to the point where they are muscling the ball and actually leading to a loss in power rather than letting the serve mechanics happen smoothly. So this is just to say, "toss higher" is not always a bad suggestion for recreational players. 2. this point applies more to the advanced players, but a toss height shouldn't be adjusted with the purpose of allowing you to better "chase the toss". Good servers will have the height of the toss fit the rhythm of their serve motion, which - along with their toss placement being solid - means they can pretty much hit the serve with their eyes closed. So if you're planning to learn advanced technique, the toss height (as long as it's not extreme) matters less than what is a working serve motion/rhythm for you (and that's determined largely by the individual's own biomechanics). 3. Continuing re: individual's biomechanics, players like Kyrgios, Ivanisevic and Tanner have MASSIVE serves with a very low toss, but it should be noted that they are still very much in the minority. Most pros along with most of the best servers of all time (Sampras, Federer, Roddick, Raonic, etc) let the ball drop a little bit before making contact. I know this video is intended for recreational players but just felt like pointing that out :^) Cheers
Very well said!!! Thanks for posting you make a very good point. I totally agree, 2 of the best server's of all time Sampras and Fed let the ball drop anywhere from 2 - 6 inches, but remember these are 2 of THE MOST talented players to ever play the game. I've found that the less natural talent a player has, the more they benefit from a toss just to the peak. If any player, recreational or professional, let's the ball drop 2 - 6 inches and they have a good solid serve and NO Problems with double faults, I say GREAT stick with what you've got. However, the reason for this video is for the hundreds of players I've personally worked with that have benefited from a lower toss, I've even seen players on the tour (Sharapova for one) that would benefit. To your tennis success, Tom
@@Fundamentalsoftennis thank you. And I see what you mean. I also agree, Sharapova definitely could've benefitted from a low toss :^) Keep up the good work, Cheers

The 2nd time I forgot some steps & was way more inconsistent. So going out again to practice the J/Loop Toss and the serves again tonight aiming to memorize your toss & throwing tips!
Hi Tom, I appreciate that a “rounded bottom j curve” toss would make the toss smoother, I don’t see the professionals doing it. Can you show a pro doing this?
There are some... most notably the Bryan brothers... Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has somewhat of a loop... however, all the top pros Fed, Djokovic, when they toss the toss arm angles out into the court, they may not have the distinct loop at the bottom but their tosses are out into the court. I like the loop because it's smoother. To your tennis success, Tom
