Hey Hollywood, thanks for these guides. I'm just about ready to jump into the deep end of the game with both feet and these guides are very illuminating. Pretty sure I'll be picking up my first starter set soon.

Well, if the model is a paratrooper, hes a veteran. Competitiveness be damned.

I took a Reg medium for my German's simply because everything vehicle wise for them is made of platinum when you look at the points for them. I mean there is usually a 20-35 points addition to almost anything the Soviets or allied forces has that are similar. And example is JSU-152 vs Brummbar 290 for the JSU vs 310 for the Brummbar on regular rating. Then if you take the 25 point for HMG for the JSU you are up to 315 vs 320 for the Brummbar if you add the Schurzen skirts. So 60 points vs 75 for the heavy mortar/spotter and you can see why the medium is just an all around better choice for the Germans. But I do love the double whammy that my mortar and Brummbar/ JSU-152 deals with infantry squads as they have the ability to whittle them down to almost nothing on just a few hits a turn.
The biggest was when I hit with my Soviet heavy mortar and followed by the JSU against a Japanese 13 man vet. squad and he was down to just 5 men after those 2 hits which is almost a game changer in itself.

One of my favorite targets for my mortars are enemy snipers. Even if I don't hit them the first shot, they have to worry about when to move and lose that annpying sniper ability. And if they wait too long...

In scenarios that imply that the mortar comes in with the first wave, how do they deploy with the spotter? Do they deploy together as in they move together in the same direction? Or do they move separately, as in the mortar moves to point A and spotter to point B?

Snipers and observers get to deploy on the board even if the rest of your forces have to come in waves.

First time I took a M10 Wolverine, I had a Falshimjagger (sp) mortar get that 6 on the first hit. Bye bye tank destroyer....

Definite take for me; seems like their real job is driving the enemy out of cover and its killing ability just a bonus.

I've got my first ever game of BA next month and I was planning on taking Reg Medium Mortars, Reg Light Howitzer, Vetran Churcbill AVRE and some Vetran infantry.
Oh and I'm Great Britain so free Artillery Observer

I would suggest to reduce Churchill AVRE to regular (huge discount and very little performance difference). Regular medium mortars are perfectly fine way to go(when i started playing BA i was taking reg medium mortar+spotter), but honestly i think that best med mortar option is inexp, which is almost half the price of regular+spotter option. Moreover if you are unlucky and your spotter would be killed, you will loose at least one shooting turn and you will be forced to start whole shooting procedure again. After several initial games i switched to inexp medium mortars and never lost a single one, simply because 60' range gives it great protection, anything capable of killing it almost always have different more valuable targets to engage, so imho it's the best option, however as I said before reg mortars are perfectly fine too.

Ill be the weirdo with 35p m mortar ig, afaik u can stull buy a spotter for them and put them in a buidling or something.
Edit: looked it up, u can put them in buildings but not take a spotter when inexperienced
Down+hardCover+smallTeam, ez 6es all the way. Buy a sniper (reg/vet) to counter possible enemy snipers targeting him, and enjoy.
If there is no enemy sniper, doesn't matter. It's still a sniper the enemy has to deal with
