You have to look at it from Fox's point of view not Shannon or Skip's, they were thinking about the long term Shannon and Skip were just not getting along. I Also think they did not like Shannon's constant race baiting, off the air behavior and how he was getting mad at Skip for every little thing he perceived as a slight.
