    At this point, I think it would be best to just leave the whole Q/Guinan rivalry a mystery. It's already really strained by the fact that the Borg destroyed the El-Aurian homeworld, while Q could probably wipe out the whole collective with the snap of his fingers if he wanted. Plus, what we've seen already of other El-Aurians, they're basically just normal (if long-lived) people.
    If I had to write a story that explained it, it would probably be along the lines of Guinan herself being personally given Q powers or something, like Riker was in that one episode. Then plot ensues.

    • @brianbatie6650
      @brianbatie6650 2 роки тому +9

      Paradox time.
      Had Q eliminated the Borg, we likely wouldn't have had Guinan as a character on the ship in the first place, to even wonder about the relationship.
      I admit, the TNG scene where Guinan was apparently prepared to defend herself against Q raised questions for me that should have been answered, and would have made for interesting story arcs.
      If Guinan was powerful enough to defend herself against Q, should she not have been powerful enough to deal with the Borg without Q's help?
      If she was given Q abilities, a-la Riker, why would she not have simply remade her planet?

    • @nagillim7915
      @nagillim7915 2 роки тому +18

      Everyone says the Q can snap the Borg out of existence and yet the only canonical information we have is Q telling Q Jr not to mess with the Borg.
      As for the El Aurians, we have no idea how long they resisted the Borg. Given an armada of cubes swarmed through their home system, though, it would appear their resistance quotient was far higher than humanity's: the Borg have never sent more than 1 cube to assimilate Earth (beta canon aside).

    • @chrisanderson7820
      @chrisanderson7820 2 роки тому +25

      You can just invent a million different explanations. For example: the El-Aurian's have a relationship with time/reality and are shown to be resistant to time rewrites, so they can't be manipulated by the Q and can see through their machinations. This alone would make them adversaries. That, however, doesn't make them gods, they can still be shot or have their planet blown up by non-temporal technologies. It's easy to imagine many lore options where a being is exceedingly strong at 1 thing without it making them a Mary Sue character.

    • @brianbatie6650
      @brianbatie6650 2 роки тому +4

      @@chrisanderson7820 Indeed that is a storyline worth considering, but it still begs the question posed by their first TNG encounter, what was Guinan's pose going to do against a Q? If Guinan knew there would be nothing she could do, then why the "tiger claw" pose? Also, Q usually just snaps a finger, but here he chose, or had to, extend his arm, suggesting it would take more power than is usual for a Q.
      Indeed, since Q is not necessarily one to actually ask Picard's permission to do something, is it possible that Q was actually trying to "disappear" Guinan, who was able to block it?
      Q's line "This creature is not what she seems, she is an Imp." begs the question, "Ok, then what is she?" Define Imp."
      Questions like these would have been better answered in the TNG run, and is a major plot device left unexplored and unexplained, so I do enjoy at least the attempt to fill in the gaps. The earthquake was interesting, suggesting a connection and ability of Guinan's never before even hinted at during TNG.

    • @Funaru
      @Funaru 2 роки тому +8

      There are possible explanations like
      El-Aurians are on a kind of half way evolution to a non-corporeal existence which gives them some defensive powers against non-corporeal beings as well as a special attunement to the flow of time. The El-Aurians might actually have put up quite a fight against the Borg perhaps using some of their powers but the technological advantage of the Borg may have offset that.

    2. Checking Memory Alpha...that's _Guinan?_ That's _ACTUALLY Guinan?_ Not her daughter or her sister or even her mother...she just completely changed her appearance after the 19th century, but went back before the 23rd.
    I can think of three or four different ways they could have done a better de-aging job. A couple of them involve miracles of computer science, one of them involves a gag about a botched facelift, and the cheapest one is just setting the episode during Mardi Gras, and having Whoopi ADR her dialogue over a body double wearing a fancy Carnival mask. And THEN you could license out the mask design, and make some extra money!

    Dont worry folks: Season 3 is going to have the old TNG crew back. It was only filmed on the back of S2 so none of the complaints will change anything. People hoping S3 is going to magically fix everything because the old actors are back. Riker ( Jonathan Frakes ) is literally behind the camera on multiple episodes, Patrick Stewart ( Picard ) has control.
    Result: The "Actors" are literally fucking over their own legacy with the same showrunners / writers - Only thing that will happen in S3 is they will get to completely decimate the entire cast of TNG like they just did for the past two seasons of Picard with everything else they touched.

Guinan being on Earth earlier than this probably points to a longer original journey. She was on Earth and in San Francisco during the events of Time's Arrow and apparently is still in California in the 21st century so the bottle must have also survived over a century in an earthquake prone region including seemingly the 1906 earthquake. @@actouep8643 sure it might be considerably stronger material though generally in good storytelling you avoid the need to specify that i.e. if something is not meant to be fragile it should not look fragile or look to be made of fragile materials. Mysterious black stone objects abound in sci-fi and fantasy because they are a quick shorthand for mysterious and presumably durable, while a glass-like bottle would be presumed fragile unless the scene specifically states otherwise (c.f. the One Ring, specifically stated to be decidedly robust in "The Shadow of the Past").
      All that aside, the real risk from long journey and living in relatively dangerous places for long periods of time is not destruction but loss from disaster, theft, expropriation. What's the oldest object your family had in its possession? Most people don't generally have very old items because of these risks. Not a matter of not taking sufficient care, just a matter of probability: the 19th and 20th centuries were particularly tumultuous and most families lost a lot through war, natural disaster. Even in a normal lifespan a person is likely to suffer a disaster a few times such as fire, robbery. Living in dangerous places, like an earthquake region, increases that risk. Running a dangerous business like a bar also increases that risk. Bars burn down a lot more often than other businesses. Disgruntled patrons, fights, theft by burglary or open robbery.
      If people can lose treasured items on a short train journey between two cities, how much more likely is it too happen on a multi-decade migration across the galaxy? Starfleet ships with much manpower get taken over by hostiles several times in this "franchise" but a small transport ship travelling through a significant fraction of the galaxy doesn't get boarded once? In the real world migrants get robbed of all valuables while journeying from modern day conflict zones to Europe, with much of the robbery sadly occuring even as they reach supposedly safe countries. It's just utterly ridiculous for Guinan to (a) have the treaty bottle in the first place, (b) for it to have realistically been safely brought so far in both time and space. It's another example of the wishy-washy magical thinking that abounds in modern Trek.
      The slightly sad thing is that with a bit of thoughtfulness they might have worked in a message about the real plight of migrants if for instance they had suggested that the bottle was not the only one but one of several such bottles (still of great significance to the El Aurian people) and that it had been stolen by a corrupt cop or liquor licensing agent or something like this, resulting in a mini-quest for Picard to get the bottle back.
      But of course I am drawing on my own experience, and that of my family who were once migrants, and putting it into context of the canon of Star Trek. Personally I find small storytelling moments much more effective and relatable than frenetic action pieces or cheap genre TV tropes like the pseudo-horror style (attempted) conjuring of the Q as shown in this clip.

    So the real question is did she summon a Q to start the TNG series.

      Nah, the TNG writers were less... hokey with their stories. Except The Traveller, that was some hokey hippy nonsense.

    I think Guinan needs to go with her fork to the Star Trek Picard writers studio and test to see if whoever wrote these episodes is a human. I have serious doubts.

    There is another plot hole one might consider. if Guinans species are from the delta quadrant, how did Guinan manage to get to earth by herself andhas lived their for centuries AND....if Guinan has been on Earth since at least the times of the wild west, how was it she was on thetransport ship fleeing the borg from her home planet? How can you have a cold warwith a species that can beat you instantly by clicking their fingers, and why would Guinan of all people have the bottle the peace was signed over?

    I like to think the Listeners have similar powers as the Q, but chose to use their power for good. To watch, learn and guide rather than intimidate.

    Why would there be a cold war between a race of omnipotent beings and a race of listeners? What would this truce even be for? This show can't be serious.

    That never needed to be explained, a little bit of mystery is a good thing, especially when it comes to cosmic entities. I'm glad I stopped watching this shit a couple of years back.

    It's funny how Guinan looks younger & didn't recognize Picard in the Star Trek Picard series when she met him and looked much older in the TNG series in the late 19th century when she was with Mark Twain

    • @warwargr3654
      @warwargr3654 7 місяців тому

      Was thinking the same thing, especially since in the Mark Twain episode she strongly hinted about that being the first time she met Picard, though Picard himself wouldn't meet her for the first time until later.

    What q did prolly destroyed the Continuum, like in the voyager episodes. That's why he doesn't have powers
