Thank you for being so honest, I have never seen a brand technician speak so transparently about the reality of their own products and those of the competition, congratulations.
This is one of THE most helpful computer discussion I've ever watched. A professional who actually knows the tools of the industry and understands that the use cases actually turn the whole build-decision process around; starting with storage for example. I have some questions about motherboard decisions -- audio choices, I/O requirements, etc., but I'm much more confident now making some decisions about my next rig. Thank you for this.
Casey, I believe I speak for all of us when I say you are now our Ambassador. It was extremely thoughtful of you to arrange this interview with Puget Systems of which I had never heard of. Thank you very much.
A DDR5 heads up I don't see people talking about. I went all in (for my budget) on my build. ASUS ROG Z790 motherboard, i7 14700k, RTX 4080 OC, 128 GB 6,400mhz DDR5 etc etc. I JUST found out that the DDR5 (4x32GB) will not run at 6400mhz. I can only get it to run at 4200mhz. If you want your RAM to run close to the advertised speed, your system can only have 2 sticks (slots used)!? Why bother putting 4 RAM slots on the motherboard and advertising RAM speeds when RAM won't actually go that fast?! (XMP in BIOS won't work with 4 RAM slots used). I wish I'd got 2 sticks of 48GB DDR5 now. So there's a little heads up for anyone who reads this.
@15:45 - I disagree. What about rendering the final edit? You most definitely could use a high-end GPU as DR will give you the choice between software or hardware-accelerated exporting. I always do hardware, i.e., GPU does all the final exporting. In any case, great video! You're the only one who did a video like this. Everyone else talks about the best PC for gaming.
This landed at exactly the moment I am considering upgrading my graphics PC as I have recently moved from stills photography to video. Two vids in and I am starting to feel where the h/w limitations are! Fantastic information targeted exactly where it's needed for video creation, and some of it has gone straight to my hardware builder :) Thanks Casey and Puget-man
If this video did anything for me, it proved that I did my research well before purchasing my desktop. I watched EVERYTHING I could, talked to EVERYONE I could…it comes down to doing your research. Thank you for this wonderful conversation with Puget
as of Davinci Resolve 19 Beta, hardware decoding is available on the free version of the software! If you've tried Resolve before and felt it was slow, try it again in the 19 beta, or whenever 19 becomes the stable release!
I'm running an 8700k with 1080ti and I was having slow down on my footage from the new Osmo Pocket 3, which was capturing 4k60 10bit. I thought about splurging on a new system for fun since mine is somewhat old. But a friend advised that I consider paying for the Blackmagic license to help boost. I thought about it, and since Blackmagic has been allowing free software in Resolve, I figure it's nice to pay them back for all the time I've used it. In any case, long story short, all my footage magically worked better in the Studio version. The monitoring playback is smooth, the rendering went up by like 125% speed. I was doing 40-45fps rendering in Resolve free, and it went to 90-110fps in the Studio version. Probably is the cheapest upgrade if you want to do this. But I'm still eyeing an upgrade of the pc hardware just for the hell of it.
Depending on your workload and what type of files you edit, I highly recommend even a cheaper Intel ARC card because it's a hardware encoder/codec beast regardless of which of the ARC cards. Even the cheaper A380 will help along with your 1080Ti. Your iGPU and 1080Ti have hardware acceleration too but I believe the ARCs are generations ahead. My opinion of course. I'm using an Intel ARC A770 and Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB together.
So glad I "cheaped out" on my new PC. Got pretty much everything you said to get for me as a general creator. Thank you for letting me know I made a good decision by not trying to throw more money at it and not getting much of a performance boost out of it.

This configuration will struggle with OFX and specially NR and super scale if you so choose to use them in Studio. If you’re not needing these features, I suggest staying with the free version of Resolve. Also the dual cards in studio won’t help much if you are not using NR and since the VRAM is just 8gb, two cards of 8gbs doesn’t add up to equivalent of a 16gb card and still will limit you to 4K UHD or less; which you can do in the free version. Studio lets you do larger resolutions but with your current configuration, it will struggle and stutter. Good luck!

Super helpful! I unfortunately one of those people that just bought a laptop the new framework 16 and this video makes me cry a little bit. Also, you’re missing the card at the very end about your free resolve introduction. Absolutely love this video though. Thank you!
Right video at the right time for me. Just the suggestion of workflow needs (proxies, etc) vs throwing money at your problem in the form of a new system gives them so much cred. All so helpful as I’m feeling on the brink of an upgrade and considering returning to Mac from PC and considering laptop vs a box.
Will make a note here. When I upgraded my system, my budget did not allow me to get the video card I wanted, which was an Nvdia 4080. I had a 3060. So I kept it and bought a 4070. Running tests after the build was complete, I did tests in DaVinci with the both cards activated and only the 4070 selected. Compared to online tests of Resolve features on different channels and sites, I found my test results were within 10% of a 4080 at (during that time) about 40% of the price. Since both cards have the same amount of memory, it works great with Blender too. So this is an option if you can't afford the card you want.
@@niksalakic5406 What does that have to do with anything? The point was the 3060 and 4070 have the same amount of memory. Read what I wrote again. Never said they had the same amount as a 4080.

Oh man! Thanks a ton for making this video, it's really going to help millions of people around the world in deciding their hardware for content creation. Also thanks to Matt, a pure soul!❤❤ I love and appreciate the videos you put out here!❤❤ I have also started learning Resolve from your introductory courses! Always the best!👌👌
This video was super helpful, I've always brushed-off the idea of integrated graphics in the CPU thinking it made no difference if you had an nvidia Graphics card. Also, Puget Systems is about 6 minutes away from my house!! Do let me know next time you're in the area, you have been (and continue to be) my go-to for Resolve/Fusion training.
One of the best video I have seen for a long time. Answered all the questions about Davinci Resolve hardware I had and those I did not know I had. Pity that living in Sweden I can not buy from Puget but the wisdom I learned I can use when selecting my next system. Great video and thanks Casey to make it happen. :-)
As a DaVinci user this is very good Intel (no pun intended) from you two guys. I'm waiting on the 15th gen to come out as I'm going to build a new system to replace my 7 YO PC and I'm on AMD and want to switch to Intel (iGPU) for the new build. I'm not editing 8k raw or anything like that but I do color grading from time to time and I/we are starting to getting ready to start dabbling in 3D to expand our range. Thanks guys.
this was the video that I needed to look into. My last video is 1080p 24min video with 100s of clips and some fusion Effects. And I can say 8GB VRam and 32GB ram is not enough! Also I did cheap out on igpu with my intel CPU. Not because it is expensive. But because I was thinking why bothering with that if I have a beefy GPU.
What an incredibly informative video. I think about 70% of it was above my paygrade. I had a system built for me in 2019 by CPU Solutions plus a few upgrades I installed since then. I'm still learning / deciding how deep to go into DR. But still, wow!
I started editing with a 2023 mac mini M2 with 8g ram. It did a decent job. I recently upgraded to a mac studio M2 with 32g ram and it runs amazingly on resolve studio.
What i learned with video editing is always buy the fastest and the strongest parts you can afford. No matter what you get you will always want more. Video editing is crazy power hungry.
Great video!!! Matt probably curbed the sales of their top tier machines a little, but those are not likely to be the normal everyday sales. But I think he probably boosted overall sales, because I fell I can trust them the next time I need a system and don’t want to build it myself. The system I built in 2022 cost me around $800.00 less than the closest comparable system I customized on their site. However, I currently make around $40.00 per hour, and I calculated up the time I spent researching the parts I bought, Puget would have actually saved me money in time.
Lots to THINK about guys. Thanks 4 ALL this GREAT information. I use the non-Studio version which works for the videos that I create. Cheers !!!!! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
From my side i can confirm that never cheap out on PSU, i go with SeaSonic Titanium. Every build before that usually died after 3 years using gold ones. Current SeaSOnic titanium after 5 still stands.
If you are a creator or an editor and regularly get large files and need storage, make sure you get a NAS for storage you can get like 96TB of storage for cheap and with redundancy enabled you will be grateful for it
Loved this video and the indepth look at building systems for Davinci Resolve. I was a little worried watch regarding the laptop I bought 3 and a half years ago when I started using Davinci Resolve. However my system still meets the requirements. I will be using these recommendations when I replace or upgrade this laptop in the future.
Maybe already mentioned but with the Resolve license you can buy the Speed Editor bundle and it comes with a Resolve license so essentially you are getting the Speed Editor for free, could even sell it if you have no interest in it.
I use integrated graphics UHD 770. For 4K Content I use 1/4 Proxy. Cutting and scrubbing through timeline is smooth. One-Two layers of text, still works absolutely fine. Now as soon as I start adding fusion compositions, effects scrubbing still works. But the Playback becomes impossible. By the way I use Free version of Da Vinci and not Studio. Currently I have no money for Studio or Graphics Card. I keep learning more and more, from the system Currently I have.
This video should be online for two years ago! 😂 I started filming and editing two years ago and didn’t know much about computers. So I went to a computer shop that sold 4K/8K editing computers (that was where they advertised with) and told them what I wanted. (I wanted it to be a little bit future proof so I didn’t had to buy a new computer after one or two years.. At first the computer was ok because I didn’t do that much with it.. Six months later the future came. I really liked filming and editing and bought another camera (10 bit footage), the one crash after another.. I did have a lot of contact with them via phone and email and in total I sent back my computer for 8 or 9 times. I really have the idea that they didn’t know anything about computers.. after 15 months I finally have a computer that works fine with 4K The company now advertises with Davinci Resolve editing computers.. 🤦🏼♀️ Think I’m going to share this video a lot!
Such a great video! So informative. I wish that laptop part was closer to the start though lol! I ALMOST bought a laptop using the info from the creator specs. Thank God I watched the whole video. If you’re considering a laptop, please jump to 31:15! I did not know you could get a PC with the same specs cheaper, and get better performance.
Thanks for this very interesting interview .And thank you for all your amazing ( and funny) tutorials. Just saw you with Alex in his latest vid , you guys are my favorite teachers. I do a lot of wildlife vids (mainly birds) , spent some time comparing the RTX 4080 with the AMD rx 7900XTX and can confirm what Matt said about the speed in Magic Mask thanks to the AI . But, there is something else nobody seems to speak about , it's the quality .The RTX 4080 is now so fast that it can barely keep track of the mask . The AMD on the other hand is much much slower but needs less correction because the tracking is more accurate ...This being said, I personally recommend at least one of those 2 cards if you work in UHD 10 bit high bit-rate . The 4090 is probably a little bit better but too expensive in my opinion and anything lower than the RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX will cause drag and demand a lot of optimized media.
Truly an excellent reality mirroring insightful video! Thank you so very very much Casey Faris! By far the most useful and helpful videos I have watched!
Thanks for this! I am currently doing a rebuild changing platforms form am4 to am5 and DDR5 ram has been a rabbit hole for me since it seems they don’t recommend taking up 4 slots for memory and only running 2 sticks to maintain stability but that makes it challenging to go beyond 64gb with memory that’s definitely supported by motherboard brands Just because it’s not listed doesn’t mean it won’t work but when you hit 128gb memory kits the price is a significant jump to roll dice on trial and error.. so I’m currently faced with the dilemma of going either 2x32gb gskill trident z Neo made for AMD Or my boards supported list of 4x32gb Kingston BUT they are slower and xmp enabled for Intel not amd I’m building. Sooo not sure which way to go and if I even really need 128gb seems he was very adamant about more ram size for pc tho
BTW, a decent add on to a laptop is a 13-16 inch artist tablet, because it can function as either a tablet or an extra monitor and is easy to travel with. I have a laptop with a 3070Ti in it and use an XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro for traveling.
Probably the most useful video for me by far. I was right for the most of the stuff but unfortunately what he said about Fusion makes a big change. I mean, the single core power becomes a priority there and now the i5 13500 I was thinking about it's no more a sweet spot....
You guys didn't touch on external nvme drives. Some users are recommending building your own with the diy cases. Will they improve performance also, or is it just because they potentially house the os? Is it a better option to build an external nvme drive compared to SSD? Thanks for sharing content with the answers to questions we need to know with a constantly evolving industry.
I'm actually interested with what Intel is doing with the Arc discrete gpus. Not only that I know Intel for having the best Decoding and encoding hardware, but their 1st gen Alchemist has shown a promising raw compute performance & still has tensor cores possible for use on the AI tools. I'm excitedly waiting for what the 2nd gen Battlemage can do, but they can take their time.
Excellent video. I was disappointed, however, to see no reference to the motherboard. What is it? Maybe I missed that? That's my biggest decision at this point.
My pc is a ryzen 5 5600g, 32gb ddr5 and no gpu. The application still runs pretty good, every couple hours of editing I'll get a bit of stuttering. But I do only edit in 1080p so that probably helps alot any way.
This is a really great interview. I'm a casual Studio user and I have spent days discovering what you cover in minutes. How do you check if an Intel IGPU is on and working? Where in BIOS and in Davinci Studio do you turn on/ confirm it is working properly?
With the new BIOS update for all Intel i7 13th and 14th generation, I wonder whether there will be a meaningful speed difference with this "standard setting" vs. a non affected Intel i5 14600 (without k) for DVR with the normal, first use case in this video.
BTW, memory upgrades are NOT simple if you are adding Sims to empty slots. Even if you find matching specs, it's a crap shoot and you often have to move the sims around to get a clean boot before resetting your memory profile in BIOS. 😢
Man! the insights on this video are priceless 🔥

Oh man! Thanks a ton for making this video, it's really going to help millions of people around the world in deciding their hardware for content creation. Also thanks to Matt, a pure soul!❤❤
I love and appreciate the videos you put out here!❤❤ I have also started learning Resolve from your introductory courses!
Thanks for this! Such a great, NO BS breakdown of how to make sure you're putting your money in the right place for the best performance.
9:29 i am switching to 14900k then. thanks for clarifying...and i also have to check bios 14:11
A wealth of knowledge and no attempt to upsell to a teir not needed. Honest advice. Well done.
this was the video that I needed to look into.
Matt is not just a Resolve Guy, He is the GUY!
What i learned with video editing is always buy the fastest and the strongest parts you can afford. No matter what you get you will always want more. Video editing is crazy power hungry.
It depends on what you do, I managed to use an fx 6300 and GTX 950 for a couple years before hitting a hard ceiling.
Very Cool video Casey! I'm one of the many nerds and UA-cam introverts loving this content.
This has been amazing for me, opened my eyes to what I need to look for as doing an upgrade shortly.
However, I currently make around $40.00 per hour, and I calculated up the time I spent researching the parts I bought, Puget would have actually saved me money in time.
man this video just comes in the right time.
First class interview. I wish I had this info when I had my system built
One word - brilliant! Thank you so much Casey and Matt. Awesome stuff guys. Great content. Very practical and honest advice.
If you are a creator or an editor and regularly get large files and need storage, make sure you get a NAS for storage you can get like 96TB of storage for cheap and with redundancy enabled you will be grateful for it
Any brand you can recommend?
@@stephencurah1059 Qnap or Synology
@@stephencurah1059 Ugreen just made a new kickstarter campaign, and its still going on if im not mistaken. Take a look at them, it's a good brand.
You didn't lie when you said: this is the best video in the world!
thanks to both of you guys.
Glad you came out with this video. There are things I didn't know. Thank You Casey.
Quality info, Casey. Puget will be top of mind for a future build.
Thank you, Casey! Another awesome super helpful video. Upgrading tech this week. Now I know better what to buy.
Thank you Casey,
there was so much I had no idea about. Made my day!
Casey Faris is the KING of Resolve.
I've Dell XPS 15 9520 - 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H 2.70 GHz, and still watching this video. :)
Wow. Thank you. This was a great interview. Well done.
totally hooked, since my new build cant start davinci with Intel's activated uhd 770🙄😭
This video should be online for two years ago! 😂
I started filming and editing two years ago and didn’t know much about computers.
I really have the idea that they didn’t know anything about computers.. after 15 months I finally have a computer that works fine with 4K
The company now advertises with Davinci Resolve editing computers.. 🤦🏼♀️
Think I’m going to share this video a lot!
your PC specs?
I was looking for a video like this for long time. Now i got it thk u😃
Thank you Casey.
The Best Video On Internet For PC Info!!
Truly an excellent reality mirroring insightful video! Thank you so very very much Casey Faris! By far the most useful and helpful videos I have watched!
Thats a great interview! But what is the best option for color grading?)
Thanks for this! I am currently doing a rebuild changing platforms form am4 to am5 and DDR5 ram has been a rabbit hole for me since it seems they don’t recommend taking up 4 slots for memory and only running 2 sticks to maintain stability but that makes it challenging to go beyond 64gb with memory that’s definitely supported by motherboard brands Just because it’s not listed doesn’t mean it won’t work but when you hit 128gb memory kits the price is a significant jump to roll dice on trial and error.. so I’m currently faced with the dilemma of going either
2x32gb gskill trident z Neo made for AMD
Or my boards supported list of
4x32gb Kingston BUT they are slower and xmp enabled for Intel not amd I’m building.
Sooo not sure which way to go and if I even really need 128gb seems he was very adamant about more ram size for pc tho
Great timing (for me) with this video! Thanks for making it 🙏
BTW, a decent add on to a laptop is a 13-16 inch artist tablet, because it can function as either a tablet or an extra monitor and is easy to travel with. I have a laptop with a 3070Ti in it and use an XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro for traveling.
12:41 He answered my question. Thank God, I can sleep in peace now.
Awesome video. Please repeat every year or two.
Probably the most useful video for me by far.
I was right for the most of the stuff but unfortunately what he said about Fusion makes a big change. I mean, the single core power becomes a priority there and now the i5 13500 I was thinking about it's no more a sweet spot....
Very enlightening, definately helped me decide what hardware to get next.
Wow..this is exactly what i need. Thanks people.
As you said, this is one extremely enlightening video!
Valuable Video! Do they, Puget, have a UA-cam or any other social media page?
Great, great info. So editing phone footage, and Go Pro footage, Intel's quick Sink won't help?
My pc is a ryzen 5 5600g, 32gb ddr5 and no gpu. The application still runs pretty good, every couple hours of editing I'll get a bit of stuttering. But I do only edit in 1080p so that probably helps alot any way.
What do you mean no gpu? How can that be possible?
@@TimetoTalkwithYevgen integrated graphics with the ryzen 5 5600g
@@TimetoTalkwithYevgen you can can just use the integrated gpu which is built in the cpu if you are not gaming or doing anything graphics intensive.
Great discussion, thanks for sharing!
