very . and we can clearly see the waking up moment with Benton near to Him never leaving Him not for a second remaining all night very close to Him and his face so serene when Carter wakes up
I love their relationship, it was like big brother and little brother relationship, Benton respect Carter and cared for him and same with Carter when he hug him when he left.
With all the hype over the Clooney/Marguilies reunion, this was the best of the episode. The student becomes the master. Compare this to the Pilot when Carter was a nervous intern who couldn't even start an IV line, to a man saving refugees' lives in Africa. Benton made who the man that Carter became.
I remember when Benton came running down the stairs after Carter got stabbed, just the thought I still feel anxious and nervous and so glad he loved Carter so much!
Peter might not have scrubbed in for that surgery, but he watched every move that was made. And he wasn’t leaving until he know John was awake, and doing well. Eriq was the first cast member Noah met when the show’s pilot was being put together. They wound up going to Europe for two weeks before filming. The actors have a strong bond, it helped portray a Benton and Carter’s bond.
Unless I am mistaken, it's the first and last time in the series that Benton has called Carter "John", probably on purpose by scriptwriters. Beautiful evolution of Carter-Benton relationship.
+Xavier DAMOUR I never really watched ER. But, l always had the feeling that Benton hated Carter because of the way he talks to him. It seems like Benton almost dismisses Carter as a person. If l was Carter, l wouldn't want to be friends with someone like Benton. Work together: Yes. Be Friends: No Way.
+Stephen Short as someone who'd watched the series from the beginning, you're completely off base in regards to their relationship. Benton cared about Carter very much and was just very hard on him to toughen him up. Benton was the teacher, Carter the student and he was tough on him to test him and Carter took it. Eventually, Carter understood that and they both grew to have a mutual respect for one another. Benton is a guy with a tough exterior but he legitimately cared for Carter like a big brother would his younger sibling. It's called tough love.
Mistah Jay I agree with what you said about Benton caring about Carter. But, still l wouldn't want to deal with someone who treated me with contempt/hate.
+Stephen Short Benton never 'hated' Carter anymore than an older brother would 'hate' their younger siblings. Granted I understand that you never saw the entire series but there's been more than one occasion where Benton showed how much he cared for the guy. Benton and his personality by definition is pretty rough around the edges but he took Carter under his wing and tested him. Carter took everything he had and in the end, Benton learned to respect the guy and form a legitimate friendship.
Mistah Jay I understand now. But, there are guys and girls like Benton out there. Some don't always apply tough love to people. And, they end up being straight up assholes to people instead.
Dr. Carter did have a drug problem with pills and Fentanyl. Taking it from a recovering nurse. When you have surgery, which I have had 9 in the last 15 years, it would be unethical to withhold pain relief for anyone. Addict or not. Carter probably had his Fentanyl running through an epidural catheter for regional pain relief. You do not want to give too many medications via IV into his bloodstream that will tax that new kidney.
this scene was so important for both of them on all points of view . Benton remained all night near to Carter never leaving him not for a second until He made sure the situation was under control
Tried to watch ER but there’s way too much drama amongst the doctors. Carter had both a drug addiction and kidney issues? It seems like there are far too many medical problems amongst the staff itself. Just doesn’t seem all that realistic.
What always confuses me is the fact that they save his kidney but in Season 15 he said something about how he only had one kidney after the attack or something like that and it was destroyed by an infection, leading to his need for a new kidney at the end of the show.
I know this is just a TV show, but did they forget that Carter went to Atlanta to kick a prescription drug habit (for Fentanyl, I believe) after he recovered from his stabbing. And here they are giving him Fentanyl after surgery. Thanks very much for the post!!
I don't think they forgot, but they didn't explain a thing about it indeed, which shocked me at first, like you! I think now that they specifically used Fentanyl to show that Carter is a fully recovered addict, and he doesn't hesitate to get proper pain medication when it's needed, like here after major surgery. I still wish they had mentioned something explicitly though...
Indeed, it took him a few seconds to explain it to Dr Banfield, and with Benton he could have skipped the stabbing part and made it even shorter... Probably just the writers not wanting to have him say it twice. Or, Carter never told Benton that his left kidney, that Benton had tried really hard to salvage, had stopped functioning afterwards and he didn't feel like telling him his efforts had been useless.
That's true but considering he's not allergic to other opioids such as morphine, dilaudid, etc. you'd think they would try to avoid prescribing the same analgesic that he was once addicted to. Opioids aren't contraindicated even when someone was formerly addicted, however physicians tend to be more cautious when dealing with those patients.
Benton and Carter have a great friendship. Out of any body Benton has been there for Carter the most. I'd say Mark Susan Abby and Luka also have been there for Carter as well but nowhere near as much as Benton.
The non-neurotic part of my brain: "Oh what a nice moment, I love that, really wraps their story up nicely" The neurotic part of my brain: "Why is he walking away? You had to open the phone and dial it for him, he's gonna need you to hang it up again!" 😂😂😂

@bemyguest80 He also has another: "One night when I was fifteen or sixteen, my friend Harry had a party and he was experimenting -- sticking a needle into a cork and dipping it in India ink. I don't remember this, but apparently I said that I wanted that white stick figure with the halo from the TV show The Saint on my arm. Harry started to do it, and either I came to my senses or fell asleep, one of the two, and I ended up with nine dots instead."

It doesn't matter. When you are addicted to an opioid all of them can trigger a relapse. You have to treat recovery very carefully after surgery and the patient may need further addiction recovery counseling.
