Because of localization issues and bad marketing a lot of 80s and 90s stuff kinda bombed when it came to sales and public reception, its unfortunate. I am fascinated by a lot of 90s ovas at the tail end of the bubble economy , lots of cancelled projects and mishandled properties that deserve better.

Watched it when it became available state side. It blew my mind how good it was, and I had never even heard of it. Only watched it because a friend recommended it. Extremely original, complicated and nuanced. It makes me happy that the movie lives on and still get appreciated now. The movie is still one of a kind

I had this on VHS in the 90s, but my version had the attempted rape scene removed, so that whole passage made even less sense. I think Shirotsugh is kind of unique as a protagonist in this kind of story, because it's clear from the beginning that he really isn't very bright at all, and even though Riquinni inspires him to apply himself for the first time in his life, he still remains a rather unlikely scientific hero. I think this underdog status also applies to his country, as the Kingdom seems to have some parallels with the USSR in that it's corrupt, poverty-stricken and technologically inferior to its rival, the Republic, but somehow it still manages to be the first to put a man in space.

I saw this in the 90's on a cartoon channel here in Canada. It's a incredible execution in visual world building with a deeply flawed character story. But boy is it inspirational as to what can be achieved when imagination builds a world.

It bothers me when someone says an anime film doesn’t feel like one just because it doesn’t include over-the-top animation or exaggerated action. That’s not what anime is; it’s simply a medium for storytelling

I've said it multiple times and I'll say it again, This might be my favorite film of all time. Absolute Masterpiece (aside from that scene).

This is my single favourite anime film, and one of my favourite films of all time.
The final launch sequence is one of the most incredible action-tension sequences I've ever seen, the transfer from the petty territorial squabbles of two nations to the immensity of space is absolutely astounding.

  • @j.2512

weird, i was just thinking about this anime these last couple days. Highly underated if you ask me, whats weird is that it doesn't deal with the usual themes you'd expect from a sci fi anime, specially from its era but it makes much more sense when you rewatch it as an older person.
I was also thinking a lot about Venus Wars, its another incredible anime from a visual standpoint that bombed in the box office and just about killed its creator's career but it could have easily been one of the all time great anime movies with just a little better script.

Saw it in the 90´s a few times and the first time(s) it did not work for me but i guess i was hoping/suspecting something of "high energy" like Gunbuster or other Gainax titles....later when i was a bit more "mature" it clicked with me and now its a classic for me.

my favorite part is how Gainax stuff only looks so good only because of raw talent, even in Gunbuster who has insanely good action they ran out of money and the ending was in black and white because they could not afford paints. They were always working with shoestring budgets and still somehow made some of the best stuff ever.

I consider this and End of Evangelion to be the greatest anime movies of all time; when Gainax was at their peak (this, Evangelion, Gunbuster/Diebuster, Nadia (sans Higuchi), FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking, etc.), they gave us the best of the best.

7:03 I think you're waaay off. That scene occurs right after Shirotsugh criticizes the power company for bulldozing Riquinni's home, saying they 'can't push her around like that'. The point of it is to emphasize that Shirotsugh isn't a _righteous_ hero and that he isn't really in control of the events he finds himself at the center of. It should have been conveyed in some other way, but the biggest problem with it is Riquinni's response -- she acts like Shirotsugh did nothing wrong and that she is to blame, which reduces her character to a 2-dimensional prop meant to hold Shirotsugh up.

Sorry to get way too personal, but I'm old and grew up in this era. I was SAed....and I hate to say it but the culture in the 90s totally embraced this behavior. I did blame myself, people actively encouraged me to shut my mouth, I was to blame for feeling so emotional about it, and I was told to focus schoolwork. No one ever referred me to psychological counseling.
"She should have stood up for herself" is so easy to say in hindsight. I'm so grateful that our global culture is different now, but I personally wish you would view this scene to understand why it was so hard for victims to come forward. The whole structure of society made us out to be the problem, I received that message again and again growing up.

    • @AbelMcTalisker
      @AbelMcTalisker 3 дні тому +1

There are a couple of points in the story that kind of establish that women in this society don`t have equal rights ( or, for that matter have any rights at all) and are very much seen as subordinate to men.
Taken in that context Riquinni's attitude is understandable as a poor lower class woman without any other relatives to support her, all she really has is the vague support of her religion (or cult) and whatever her relationship with Shirotsugh is.
The Kingdom is portrayed as a society with a lot of serious social problems hinted at but not explained directly though its not hard to make some assumptions based on Earth history. But remember, this is NOT Earth, just a world that resembles it in some ways.
When you say "she acts like Shirotsugh did nothing wrong and that she is to blame", you miss the point that from the point of view of the society portrayed she is to a degree and the religion she follows teaches that everybody is a sinner and damned but the way to act is to forgive anyway, no matter what.
