Worth playing the third game, the original and not the upcoming remake (based on Tokyo Game Show demo, it's a low budget attempt with worse sound, animation, etc. than the PS1 game)

It surprised me how the end of the manga is a bit on the supernatural side of things but even that was done splendidly. Easily among one of my favourite mangas of all time
Yeah, like the dude in glasses seems to be some... avatar of war? He actively tries to corrupt people through the story and even mentions that he gets sick when he does something good. I never really got his purpose other than being a very overt metaphor. It's not bad or anything, just seems a bit out of place.
When the Ukrainian War started at 2022 that ending scene just stuck in my head for a day, very creepy

always reminded me of Gungriffon the Eurasian Conflict on Saturn when i was a kid, my first battles in places like kiev back then.
I need to go to bed because I work 12 hours tomorrow but after I am done I will watch this video. I am a huge Front Mission fan and when I heard about the manga, I checked it out and was shocked out how insanely violent it is. I loved it. I can't believe Square Enix even approved this.
i work 15 hours night shift 6 days a week, and i watch any video that looks intresting so i pass time.

@SnipyShino i never knew that. Front Mission Dogs Life manga reminded me of Moonlight Mile manga and then it turns out it was made by the same guy, Ohtagaki Yasuo, who eventually made Gundam Thunderbolt, sadly, Thunderbolt is not as violent as his previous works.
"Dog Life & Dog Style" has a special place in my heart, unfortunately related to my IRL experience that changed everything for me.
First time reading this manga, I met it as a good written, but a sci-fiction. Because these kinds of conflicts are not possible anymore in our world, we have an “End of History” and all of that. Little did I know, that this manga was a prediction for me.
A year later, my mother proposed me to go hang out with my sister in Prague a bit, as she was going to leave us back for her studies up there. I declined as I only got 2 mouths ago job of my dreams - game designer, and didn't want to take any vacations this early, plus that would be strange a bit. 2 days later after she left I regretted my decision.
Approximately 10 days later, after she left, I was going to buy drinkable water for family not far from our place. Crazy enough to myself, during that walk I find myself very related to Indusuka from manga, because I was hearing the second beautiful thing, that I ever heard in my life. (First one was the singing of an orthodox priest, when my grandmother was dying of Cancer).
It was a symphony of the Russian and Ukrainian artillery and machine gun fire slowly approaching the city where I lived - Kiev, capital city of Ukraine. Their approach was clear - every 2-3 days during mine food/water resupplying routine I clearly was hearing as the front was getting closer and closer, to the city. At some point, I even was able to identify different kinds of artillery systems that worked out there. Hearing this was comparable to a sex, you will never understand all mighty of heavy weaponry till you hear it for yourself, even from a far.
At that moment, enjoying approaching sounds of a death, I said to myself: “Not a sci-fiction anymore, huh?”
Crazy time we're living in.
P.S. Please do not try to discuss politics here, it will not change everything and only make me cringe a lot. Especially if you heard about Ukraine first time in your life after 24.02.2022. I just wanted to share my experience.

Man I've been just thinking about this manga recently, after looking at the various Front Mission remakes we're getting, yet never had a chance to read it. I had no idea the same artist did Thunderbolt!! And I didn't expect such a glowing review, amazing video and I'll try to find some time to read it because morally grey stories like these are amazing. From what I remember playing the original games, they didn't have the same kind of stories unfortunately, still war stories but clearly not the same tone for sure.
You can't hide that Girls' Frontline BGM playing when war is declared from me.

gross oversimplification, but aigh. a dead tank also doesn’t necessarily mean a dead crew, it’s hard to tell from a glance unless there’s an obvious sign like a turret toss.
You can do both.
There is also "Arms Peddler" Manga, which sadly in forever hiatus.
This one depicts Post-Apocalypse Earth with some mystical elements that can quench if your thirsty for Berserk level brutality. Also great art style for those looking for the classic manga of old but not too old.

Gunslinger Girl - Italian Child soldiers
Tetragrammaton Labyrinth - Immortal goth girl set in Europe heavy on Christian religion.

I wish it got the animation treatment like thunderbolt did. I even imported the complete manga set a long time ago. As well as building the square enix kits. Maybe if it gets enough interest it will get adapted
I really like Eden- it's an endless world as a manga that does touch on proxy wars and it's effect on civilians. Its unflinching.
It's also about addiction, politics, exploitation, poverty etc
That manga is absolute garbage.

Thanks for covering this. DL&DS was something I picked up at a Japanese used book store back in the oughts and the macabre approach was appealing to me. Though its the remaster that is exposing people this manga.

While not a mecha story or a manga, I recommend Black Powder Red Earth. It follows a conflict in the middle east where PMCs are the main fight forces in the ground. I haven't personally been able to check it out yet, but its on my list

when i was reading this manga i couldn't shake this feeling that it feels eerely similar to Gundam Thunderbolt, even though the story and setting is completely different.
now it all makes sense once you mentioned the author is the same person
Its criminal how Square Enix just abandoned this series and left it to stagnate under smaller studios just making remakes of the games and model kit lines.

I remember showing this manga to my platoon when in the field, I managed to get most of them into manga by doing so.
reading now with the gundam thunderbolt OST in the background, god i love Yasuo Ootagaki. Great video by the way, i totally dont mind if you branch out from the gundam universe and im sure lots of other people love it as well

This is how Front Mission was meant to be. I remember playing the first game because everyone said it was such a gritty depiction of near future warfare, but when I got into it it was just a bunch of little robots punching each other. I was reminded of the immortal words of Billy Connolly: "But there was nae dead bodies around. And I thought, oh, aye!"
This my first time hearing of the manga version of front mission, the art looks amazing so I'll definitely check it out.
My only experience of the front mission games are front mission 4 and 5, which I enjoyed but it's been along time, I've also heard not many liked the remakes, but I haven't played the remakes yet.

The war ends, Inuzuka gets arrested and interrogated but pulls some dark sorcery to mysteriously vanish into thin air as a nuke explodes over Japan

Thematically, he’s meant to be a spirit of war by the end of the manga. But in all likelihood, he was surrounded by battlefields full of high-tech gear and dead elite soldiers that he probably just looted some military augments/equipment that allowed him to “vanish” from his interrogators.
Ah yes, Dog Life & Dog Style. I stumbled upon it when I was in junior high. It really fccked with me, how unapologetically raw and violent it was.
I remember reading this manga quite a while ago, the first game was peak Mecha for me, I got my brother into it, and he finished the game. Those armor designs, still drive me nuts.

Just from the sense that it also draws from modern warfare dystopia with a spice of future technology. They "fish from the same stream", as Terry Pratchett used to say. If you like this and FW, you might enjoy "Eden: It's an Endless World".

I didn't know FM has a manga. Mech Violence brings back Eden it's an endless world to mind. Games needed this. It's not just fun robots shooting each other and this shows it beautifuly. I started collecting Basilisk books now but this is next on the list
Have you heard of the new upcoming video game The Forever Winter from Fun Dog Studios. The entire game has a concept similar to this where instead of being a soldier or someone popular in a giant mechanized apocalyptic war. You are a nobody, a scavenger trying to survive as the war slowly destroys the world.
The game is a grimdark tactical survival horror shooter (PvEvE) where you play as a lowly scavenger using the choas to his advantage to sneak pass and loot the dead.
You dont shoot to kill. You shoot to live. Try to be the hero, your dead.
Its in early acces right now because the developers are still working on it and they need support and error look outs.
Just like the manga, from what we have seen from the game, its insanely violent, bleak, and disturbing in its depiction of mechanized warfare and lore.
Your video on this manga has the same concepts and tone as the game. This manga may have been one of its inspirations as the game is heavily inspired by famous si-fi titles and manga

I think the Europan mechs were inspired by some of the mechs in Front Mission games.
Honestly, remembered the manga but not the name for long time.
Took years for me to find the name and learn it was a spinoff series (well kind of as you say).
If you like mature manga with some thoughts I will recommend 透明人間の骨, though I don’t know if it is translated or not. Nothing related to mech though.
The end when lady boss’a ticket home was cut short is the saddest part
I just went through the manga and Inuzuka Kenichi reminds me of Judge Holden in Blood Meridian. Both seems to have the ability to show up at battlefields and escape unharmed, able to bring out the worst of people in a battlefield and seems to thrive off war.
(Of course, the main differences are Holden is a large man and is an active participant in the atrocities described in Blood Meridian, while Kenichi is a small man and a noncombatant).
Gotta love the blocky mecha design that is still so anime of front mission.

the look of that manga kind of reminds me of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed that came out way back in the 80's and early 90's
Been playing Front Mission games since I was about 15. Then went to actual war at 18 to 26. I have to say even games like FM1 and FM3 capture much of the essence. The invisible man is certainly the witness to everything, the sum and what remains of what we have to look back on after it's over.
If anything the manga does right. Is how it shows what exactly sets apart high skill wanzer pilots.
Akagi and Sheepherder is defo clear example of 99 short and 99 melee stat in game with bonus of dodge 99.

I was in the navy for a couple years and the experience made me anti-war. Being in a crew 20 hrs a day, doing everything together, every day changed how I view the relationships that I have.
This is probably one of the many pieces of art that the creators of the Forever Winter devs took inspiration from
I always assumed wanzer is just short for "walking panzer". I reckon they didn't use the word tank because it would be shortened as "wank".

Reminds me of watching things in ukraine, seeing soldiers joke about them being next to die, or bombing a trench and seeing some poor dude roll out of a bunker to just get casually tapped by passing soldier as they bleed out.
One of the best manga I have read on warfare. Very realistic and very faithful to human nature. I wish there were far more stories in this.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really enjoyed this manga when I saw it on one of those sites a long time ago. This manga reminds me of the horrors of war and how back in 2006 I wanted to join the Marines but my Marine veteran cousin convinced me otherwise since he went to the Iraq War back in 2003-2005. After hearing that I wanted to join he called me and said "In a way, I hated life." Scared me straight and never joined. But anywho, great manga, would recommended to anyone who likes war/mech theme stories.
Wow this was really really dark depressing sad and there's no good involved in it. Which I think is perfect for front mission because I do believe even the series kind of goes into that front although the only recent thing I've heard about the series now is most people didn't like the first remake, a good amount of people didn't like the second remake and from what I'm hearing about the third remake from what people reacted in the trailer's, it's not looking that good. And we don't talk about that 1 not front mission game that was just a metal gear solid rip-off so at least this manga carries the essence of the series and it is good for what it does.

It goes from happy go lucky to soldiers using portable nuclear missiles and aliens committing xenocide on humanity. And the whole universe is just bonkers
