- So from my most famous Brown Sound video, a lot of the things have changed over the past year and a half. New gear, new skills and most importantly new ideas - how to make it sound better, closer, etc.
I think this is pretty close, especially considering the fact that Eddie probably didn't use a DiMarzio Super Distortion in his Shark during the recording sessions of the first album, and in this I am using a Super Distortion equipped guitar.
Let me know what you think!
F8cking wicked! Cheers!
Pete Thorn has seen the Explorer in recent years before Ed passed away, and he said it definitely looks like a super distortion is still in it.
I'd definitely reccomend watching Jim Gaustad's videos on his brown sound quest, his tone is super close and his videos are super in-depth. He covers the gear Ed used for early VH records, and has done a ton of research into the pickups he used.
Yeah I've been following Jim pretty much all the way since he posted his VH II quest! I've chatted with him multiple times, the guy's great for sure! Amazing knowledge, guitar collection and effort he puts into these videos. He's got 1984 quest coming up soon which I am really excited for!
Sounds authentic and great and from my experience Eddie very could have used a DSD or Mighty Mite in the Explorer!
using a Fender Mustang?! Sounds sick! I'm trying to get the brown sound with my Wolfgang Special and a Yamaha THR30ii
Geez… awesome
how good is the stock Kramer Baretta Special for this sound? Thinking about getting one for Christmas! Great tone btw
Thank You! It is a great guitar for tinkering around with. However if you leave it stock, I personally think you cannot go wrong with it. It's a great instrument. Holds tuning real well, sounds magnificent.
Good to know! All I'm doing is taking out the middle spring, and lubing the nut/bridge other than that I'm leaving it bone stock.@@mw5150g
That sounds killer! What’s the full signal chain? And what pickup do you think he used if not the Super Distortion? I’ve liked most of the Super Distortion clips I’ve seen folks record for Van Halen tests. I’m thinking it could be a Mighty Mite or a Seymour Duncan Custom.
Thank you!
I’m using a Fender Mustang LT25 Amp -> Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Delay -> Guitar. The Amp is plugged directly into the PC via USB cable. The program I’m using is Reaper.
Keep in mind however, that a lot of the sound, or I should say MOST of the sound is coming from the mix/mastering. EQs, reverb, etc.
You know what, it’s actually pretty tough, I theorize that it was just the Super 70. But to be honest, when it comes to the Ibanez Destroyer songs on the first album, I think Runnin’ With The Devil stands out a little tone wise from the rest of them. I don’t know if only I hear this, but I think the DiMarzio just a little too harsh.
Now, obviously I do not own the same exact setup that Eddie used, but that’s just speculation.
One thing I do have to add is when I did You Really Got Me, Jamie’s Cryin’ and On Fire demos with the exact same setup & guitar, it sounded really, reaaally close.
@@mw5150g it’s amazing that you’re getting those tones out of the fender amp, sounds great. Sounds like I need to work more on my mixing skills. And it totally could be the Super 70 pickup too, if it’s good enough for Dr. Jim Gaustad, it’s good enough for me. For my ears, I do feel there is a bit of harshness on those Destroyer songs, not sure if it’s a Super Distortion or some other ceramic pickup, or something else. We’re all just speculating, but it’s fun 😅
@@mw5150gI have a real plexi setup with variac and I agree that the super distortion is too harsh. I have a 70s vintage one they can still be had cheap and I hate the tone from it
Dude I need all the settings for thie
70% of it is reaper work, on the AMP the settings are not anything too crazy. Just the BURN setting with Treble at 10 mids a bit over 6 and bass at basically 1, and then 5 band EQ with similar situation going on.
@@mw5150g you mention a 5 band equalizer. Which one are you using?
@@chrisclayton584sorry for a late response… it’s the 5 Band EQ in the amp
Bit of a obscure question, but if I had a Boss GE-7, should I still use the 5 band EQ built into the amp, just the GE-7, or both? Love the tone btw!!
Thanks! To be honest, what works best for you! Maybe you can mix both EQ and get an even better tone! There are so many ways to get close to Ed's tone, it's unbelievable.
@@mw5150g Yeah, I'll tweak around and see what works best. Btw, unrelated, but if you haven't already you should upload a full cover of You Really Got Me!
@MaciekW5150, As always that sounds great!
Try a the Seymour Duncan custom (sh-5), you will be pleasantly surprised
Keep in mind, the shark wasn't the shark until VH2, it was still a destroyer in VH1, he didn't put the super distortion in until he turned it into the shark
for the old VH tone i really like the 59/Custom hybrid pickup. this is much closer to a PAF tone than the regular Custom.
How’d you get the sound!???
Fender Mustang LT25 Amp + Electro Harmonix Memory-Toy -> reaper.
Show us the settings!!!
The settings I usually use is keeping the treble at the highest, bass pretty low and mids around middle... the thing is, A LOT of the sound is coming from reaper, which, ya know, EQs, Reverb, etc.
Are you still using the fender mustang
yes!
