*Editor Note:* There have been a few issues raised by this video that we wanted to address. First, it has been noted that some of the facts in this video seem like “generalizations” that do not always pertain to someone with autism. Second, it has been claimed that the video paints autism as “bad” or “Wrong” and could be offensive to someone with autism. Last, there has been a reference to Autism Speaks which is not viewed favorably by many in the community. For any misunderstanding arising from this video we apologize. Our intentions are far from wanting to hurt, offend, damage, or in any way tarnish anyone who has autism. Quite the contrary. Our desire was to raise awareness to people with Autism. Again, if this video has been offensive to you, please accept our apologies. - Juan

DO NOT GIVE TO AUTISM SPEAKS! Autism speaks rarely uses money raised to directly help those with autism and instead funnels its money and time into helping the parents which though is helpful to some extent they make out that autism only exists in children and that the children will always be badly behaved. Autism speaks has little to no actually autistic people working for them and is looking to eliminate autism entirely. Autism isn't a bad thing. Being Autistic isnt something that should be cured because it's not a horrible thing. What is horrible is being marginalised by a charity that's meant to be supporting autistic people. They create advertisement that shows autistic people to be a burden on society, a video that has now been taken down where a member of the board said about how she sometimes comtemplates killing her autistic daughter while the daughter was preasent, made a video called "I am autism" that compares it to AIDS cancer and saying it will ruin the parents marriage. A much better charity is 'The Autistic self advocacy network".
It is so import that big channels like this don't endorse a charity that doesn't speak for the autistic and instead enforces stereotypes around the condition.
Please DO NOT give to Autism Speaks.

Autism Speaks rejects any form of self advocacy among those who are high functioning, and instead seeks things that most of the autistic community, which I'm a part of, flat out doesn't want. While I know the reference is well-meaning, the inclusion of that organization at the end means that I will not share or like this video. There are other organizations which are not only more worthy, but which could use the exposure. Autism Speaks spends more on fundraising and awareness, it's true; but much of that might instead be used to actually help autistics and their families cope. So while this is pretty good information, I can't offer support to this video because of it.

Of all the things you said, by no means should you ask people to go to "Autism Speaks." I'm mildly autistic myself and I know that that organization is the last one you should check out. They shed a bad light on autism. Most of their money lines their own pockets. I'm not going to discredit everything they've done. I have heard some good things about them and their research, but they are not an organization that I would suggest.

  • @sarahjensen2473

I gave you a thumbs-up in spite of you sending people to Autism Speaks. The autistic community does not endorse them for good reasons. Parent groups often promote a false image of autism with dangerous approaches to dealing with it. ABA is similarly questioned by those with first-hand experience of autism.
It's not like there are no people to consult about this, groups that refuse to listen to those on the spectrum who communicate well about their experiences are making a choice to promote themselves over the welfare of their children. It's probably not worse than having your strengths downplayed and being abusively trained to "act normal" but it borders on Munchausen by proxy.

I am 32 and my fiancé is 27. Our son was diagnosed with ASD, language disorder, and global delay at 18 months. Autism isn’t a bad thing but I did get emotional when given the diagnosis. Since then, we have put him into speech therapy and are on the waiting list for OT. Our insurance won’t cover anything “autism-related”.... I think that should be illegal. We are having trouble getting him into ABA therapy, with that being said. Autism or not, my little man is intelligent and handsome and has made some impressive breakthroughs with only 3 sessions of speech therapy. We are so blessed to have been given a diagnosis early and my fiancé is the most amazing woman that I have ever met. If not for her, my naivety would have resulted in a late diagnosis. Lots of love to everyone out there with autism and to all of the amazing parents that stand behind their little angels ❤️

Hey Mike - THANK YOU especially for #1!
Hey parents - if you're here specifically for Autism Spectrum, hang in there. I know it can be frustrating trying to figure out a diagnosis or getting the right help but be vigilant - you are your child's advocate. My son is 8 yrs old & he's been in Early Intervention since birth (Speech, PT, OT, Behavioural Therapy) & just recently a psychologist has started thinking A.S.D.
Luckily we've learned so many strategies along the way that getting an ACTUAL diagnosis doesn't surprise us.
If your pediatrician isn't listening, find another. If another mom is saying "I'm sure that's normal" but you know it's not, start researching yourself.
You know your child & you feel your instincts.
It's better to be wrong than to find out much later....you were right!
    Take care & Good luck!

Applied behavior analysis is abusive. Imagine if someone figured out all of your coping mechanisms everything that makes you happy and said that is not allowed. The way kids are trained is similar to the way they train dogs. And it only teaches how to cover Autistic behavior (which there's no harm in. There's a reason we flap our hands and say the same words and such. It looks weird but it lets me function) many Autistic adults who went through ABA feel like they are living a lie and can't fit in with either group

    • @happygirl1600able

Alexandra Prescott are you Autistic? I'm not trying to say that "I'm Autistic and this is an Autistic thing so you can't say anything" I appreciate your response and the way you said it, however, it can be very difficult for those without Autism to understand the affect of being told stimming and other Autistic behaviors aren't allowed. It is much better to stim and avoid Meltdowns than have the meltdowns. Yes I look weird flapping my hands but I would rather that than have the meltdown

Alexandra Prescott but they take away the ability to self regulate without shame. Which is super important. It's not teaching you to not need these behaviors it's teaching to hide them. Like if someone punished their kids everytime they expressed a certain emotion. It wouldn't be okay. That emotion wasn't their choice. Even if the parent indirectly punished ("boys don't cry!") the kid will learn to bottle up feelings. It's counter productive and very harmful.

    • @happygirl1600able
      @happygirl1600able 7 років тому +4

Alexandra Prescott (BTW the boys can't cry isn't something I agree with either it was just an example) teaching control of emotionals is different in neurodivergent and nuerotypical kids. Yes it's important to have some control over your emotions, but teaching kids that the natural way they express their emotions isn't okay is teaching them to bottle them up.

Autism was actually first described in 1925 by Grunya Sukhareva, a Soviet Jewish woman. Also, you don't have to say "person with autism spectrum disorder" every time. It's okay to say "autistic"...really. and for "person without autism spectrum disorder", one can say "allistic" or "neurotypical". Furthermore, rather than supporting Autism Speaks, you can support an organization that is for autistic people by autistic people: the Autism Self Advocacy Network or the Autistic Women's Network. Nothing about us without us!

I have Autism, but it's a high functioning kind. It's known as "the best and worst kind to have", due to how highly aware of Everything we are. This includes the World and people around us, knowledge about our handicaps and especially *why* they are issues. This can make it feel very stressful for us, because our Brains never "shuts down", and it can be too much for us. Although I am glad that people are so open to accept us, I don't wanna associate with any autistic support Groups or anything like that. It reminds me too much that I have this (even though sometimes it can be a positive thing, due to our mindset) and I don't wanna be reminded that I'm autistic, more than I have to. Many times I can talk about it with no issues, but I don't wanna be constantly reminded of this burden.

I have it, too, the high functioning one, and that's exactly how I feel about having it. I wasn't diagnosed 'till I was 14; my family knew I was different, but didn't know why I behaved the way I did until the diagnosis. Since then, I've made huge strides in social interaction; at first, I was kinda shy and didn't know how to meet new people or how to behave in social situations, but now I can handle most generic scenarios with ease, like ordering food in a restaurant, buying groceries/other things, sharing common interests, and introducing myself, for example. I've still yet to tackle more complex things, though, such as paying bills, driving, getting and keeping a relationship(date-wise), and keeping a job. I'm almost 30 now, and every day is always a challenge to some extent; I tend to, more often than not, act like I'm still a teenager and often get mistaken for an older one, since I look really young for my age. heheh... I will admit; sometimes, I wish I was neurotypical like some of the people I went to school with, but then again, if that happened, I'd probably lose some of my interests, so I'm fine with who I am. ;)

There is no high or low functioning, no mild or severe. It's just autism. Autism is a spectrum, not a grayscale. Spectrums are round. Meaning there is no ends, so when people say "high functioning and" they are just blatantly wrong. It's just autism.

I have ASD. was diagnosed in 1st grade however I didn't hear a word about it until about 3rd grade but wasn't told much detail about it for a while longer even then.
"You are not normal." is a sentence I will never forget, especially not the way it was said with this mild frustration or irritation in the voice. it wasn't how I originally found out but it was an unnecessary reminder.
I've been told I am very intelligent, perhaps even smarter than some of my teachers.

As an Autistic girl, I will say that I feel Autism is more than just a social issue condition; it affects how you think in many ways. It affects how you learn (although it most certainly does not mean you can’t learn, it just means that you might learn in a different way to neurotypicals, or that it may take you longer to learn something, or that it may take more repetition and also for things to be explained in certain ways), it also affects your spatial awareness, your awareness of other people, your motor control and can make you more prone to some other mental health issues, like anxiety, depression, etc.
However, I must reiterate that Autism is not something “wrong with you” or something “the matter with you”; it just makes you different and all the more special!

My stepson Nathan was diagnosed very early at age 1.5 yrs old. He is now 17. All of the facts presented in this video are accurate, however recent studies have produced evidence that Autism has been linked to the RNA strand, in particular the 22nd genome. Also when discussing learning skills or social development you forgot to mention a very important tool used by teachers, speech pathologists and therapists which is RDI or Relationship Development Intervention. This therapy goes hand in hand with ABA (applied behavior analysis) and has helped hundreds of thousands of Autistic persons around the world.
We are very happy to see you advocating for better understanding of autism and autistic persons! Big fans of List 25 here, thank you and keep up the good work!

As someone with Autism, let me critique this video:
-Vaccines can trigger the present genes to make Autism mire noticable
-Early treatment can also come in the form of a supportive, loving family. This was all I needed prior to school
-People call Autistics a liability in the business world
-Girls do show the symptoms differently. I know this because I am a girl who was diagnosed late in fifth grade.
-BONUS: Autism related mutations actually help prevent cancer.
Also, we in the Autistic community LOATHE Autism Speaks. They do not speak for us. They want to kill us.

    • @agerven
      @agerven 6 років тому +2

@princessbinas. I'm on the spectrum too. Good remarks from you.
One from my side though: vaccines can not trigger genes. Actually nothing can except radioactivity or similar radiations. People are born with autism.
What is very likely, and that is somewhat in the direction you suggest, is that some vaccinations given in youth, especially BMR (in Dutch, don't know the international abbreviation) will give rise to different behavior, and thus may also draw attention to someone being on the autistic spectrum.

The 'disorder' part really doesn't sit well with me. It implies that there is inherently something 'wrong' with autism and that those without it are better off when in actual fact it is merely the symptoms of a nervous system which processes information in a way that deviates from the norm. I think you would find that in many cases a lot of the social issues and anxiety an autistic person faces could come from the fact that they believe they are different from so called 'normal people' which leaves them feeling isolated and alienated.

Here's a good help for anyone else suffering with autism. Get a allergy test and avoid foods packed with sugar as candida makes us have blocked processing of brain. Also don't drink fluoride or use fluoride toothpaste it also has in studies of lowering everyone's IQ. Food can be a massive part of autism and will lower symptoms drastically well depending on environmental factors. Exercise is very good for autism too as it can help with coordination and confidence.

Hi all. Like many of you I have autism. I have been vaccinated over the course of my life. I wasn't given my first vaccination until I was 4 years old so I was already capable of speech and interacting with other children when I was given my first vaccine. Before my mother could walk me out of the clinic I slumped over and started to shiver. I was treated for shock. Ever since that day I have had autism. I have friends and interact with people in my life but im still not great at understanding people, when people are joking or aren't being honest with me. So I hope you will understand if I told you being told vaccines don't cause autism it equally as irritating to me as being told they do is for you.

Thank you for this. Many people don't understand that people with Autism Spectrum Disorder have a range of symptoms and ASD is categorized from mild to severe.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for informing people about autism . There are so many myths and misconceptions that it's nice to hear clear and accurate information. Thanks again.

Best list yet... made me finally go from viewer to subscriber. While always entertained I found this the one to make me see also the educational side. Great job.
