Moniker is very lucky have you to call on taking it to most garages they would of shafted her and probably never find the problem your one of the good guys Alan 👍👌
My wife has got a 2018 ford ka+ 1.2 and the windscreen scuttle leaks water on to the top of the engine really bad and I have been trying to fix it. Your video has really helped thanks
well, never thought we would be complaining about monnica getting too wet at the front... good job it was the front scuttle, might of got a slap mentioning the rear one good work detective howatt, extra sausage for your tea tonight
An easier fix is to make a hole in the plastic where the puddle is that way the water goes straight onto the lower panel and doesn't form the puddle that creates the capillary problem I know it sounds wrong but I did it and it works 👍
Most cars have a engine cover on now so this wouldn't happen, poor design by Ford I guess. The young lady must be very happy it's finally fixed, great video and well explained.
Well done Alan - nice easy fix, but finding it was the problem. I should think that in really heavy rain, the action of the wipers on the fastest speed would push a lot of water onto that trim panel and the leaky joint. Great video again.
Another brilliant fix Alan well done, clearly a great detective as well as a great mechanic. What a stupid idea designing a two-piece panel that will ultimately cause issues. Surely moulding two pieces is more expensive than moulding one. Ahhh, but of course, with engines becoming ever more reliable maybe Ford are 'building in' issues to keep the 'stealerships' in work !.
Hi Alan, great investigative work on your behalf. It’s a shame that the two halves of the drain scuttle panel can’t be “clipped” together to reduce the risk of water causing another problem further down the line - poor design by Ford i guess. Well done & keep up the good work. Kind Regards, Mark. P.s you would have thought that Monica would be a bit more appreciative 😂
Alan, a friend has had his mondao mk4 titanium diesel.. It just stopped dead in the road and the horn stuck on. He showed me the video with the horn stuck on. He disconnected the battery and it was ok again. He said he thought the folding mirrors folded by themselves whether thats related or not. Ever had this fault in all your years on them. I think it's keyless with the blank over the key hole on the column.
My theory is that each spark plug hole is essentially a metal tube ,sealed at the bottom by the spark plug ,and sealed at the top by a rubber " mushroom " seal around the coil. When it rains ,the water pools around the top seal, the heat from the engine heats the air in the sealed tube which then expands out through the rubber coil pack seal, which acts like a one way valve. When the engine cools down , the atmospheric pressure gets sucked back into the tube along with the pooled water. This event is then repeated every time it rains, or the car is washed , thus filling up the tube /s ? Well, that's my theory anyway!
If the engine is similar to the fiesta zetec, then there are core plugs in the space between the cam housing and the head. My 2002 model was always damp around the spark plugs. There was a slight coolant loss, but the engine performed well so I never had to strip it down.
Great Video Alan. Pleased To See That You Found The Actual Problem. It Sounds Like These Engines Have The Same Problems With The Scuttle Panels As The Ford Focus 2004-2008 Had Where Rain Water Would Actually Collect On Top Of The Engines Affecting The HT Leads And Plugs Causing A Bad Misfire. We Came Up With A Fix For That In Cyprus By Trimming A Piece Of Matting To Act As A Raincoat For The Engine And It Worked. Anyway, Fantastic Vid As Always Mate.
Where that small puddle on the scuttle top is drill an extra hole to allow the water into the scuttle.... That will solve the problem even if the sealant gets moved I thought something diffeent when you was on about lifting Monicas bonnet
As I recall it was said the car was washed and the engine jet washed, looking at the scuttle it's filthy someone never did a good job, Renaults are almost the same K4M engines have a cover, but in many cases it's missing, I had a misfire but could not get the coilpack out, turns out it was the same as the KA, the coilpack did come out covered in rust, the tube was all corroded, water leaked from the scuttle and found its way into the coilpack tube. For many cars with steep windscreens you have to remove parts of the scuttle, wipers arms just to get access to the top of the engine. Good fix, that KA is crying out for some sort of engine cover.
Well done, Alan. I suspect as well as heavy rainfall, successive pressure washing over time hasn't helped. I was always of the opinion close aim pressure washing forces excessive water into places where it shouldn't normally go. So, I avoid using them. Cheers. Vivian
Ford had a similar issue with the mk1 Cmax. they issued a rectification notice to all dealerships that actually instructed them to drill holes in certain places so that the water could run out. there's actually a video on UA-cam of this being done.
Intriguing and totally understandable. That said. The spark and coil should hold out water capillary or not. Bet not many a KA has done this. Needed better factory clips skittle join.
I'm very surprised that this engine doesn't have a cover of any kind? That would prevent this problem from occurring in the first place. When I saw the first video my immediate thought was the scuttle drains being blocked allowing water to pool and then overflow the edge and go places that it shouldn't and I wasn't a million miles off with that thought, good to know my diagnostic skills aren't completely broken now I'm working solely on computers! 😉
Silicone grease could be a good idea to prevent corrosion in the coil contacts. I thought these Ka+ used the 1.25 zetec engine. Perhaps that was the older model.
As you can imagine this is a bigger vulnerability on motorbikes especially as most are twin cam. However they have a drain hole on all the ones I've looked at to stop the cavity filling up
Have used brake/engine degreaser for a few years now for spot killing weeds, wait for a sale, and stock up. Cheaper and faster than name brand weed killer, spray onto the center of the flat weed and it soaks down into the root. Turns them black and dead in about an hour.
Another great job by the Designed-To-Fail-Just-Outside-The Warranty engineering team at Ford. Same team who brought you plastic-coated brake pipes that corrode prematurely.
May be worth putting a thick layer of grease around the rubber boot where is meets the rocker cover, that should help repel the water incase the seal on the scuttle goes again
When i bought my renault 17 twenty-four year's ago. I had a similar problem i had a misfire, after washing the engine before I changed the cylinder head gasket. I discovered a spark plug socket had been left in the tube over The spark plug when it got wet it shorted the plug out🤣. It looks like the spark plug tubes are a bad design on the Ford engines , if the tubes were longer and stuck out more, then the water would not get in as easily.
I had a vectra C a few years ago. Siting in the car during a downpour and suddenly water started gushing into the passenger footwell. Turned out scuttle drain was blocked and overflowing into cabin.
Might be worth a email to Ford and share with them your findings, likely will be filed in the B 1 N folder but at least youve done your bit. If they are seeing warranty issues, people in Ford garage arent going to go to the lengths you have and itll never get fixed properly.
Correct product for scuttle panels is butyl tape ...original Ford focus used it in their scuttle panels..and when I was technical support at autoglass..I would tell techs with this type of problem to use butyl tape ...avaliable from ford and amazon..
I think Ford meant Ka to be pronounced 'Kah' - just like 'car', Alan. 😊 Good find btw. - but shouldn't the ignition coil seal be able to stop that trickle? You could think that someone might have the idea to wash the engine at some point. 👍
I was working on my old Fiesta/Fusion today and was thinking what a good scuttle panel it has to getting rid of water. Which makes me think that Ka is rubbish! As we progress things get cheaper made and we end up with stupid problems like you have with this Ka because big companies want to save money, maximize profits and give us rubbish products!
If the plastic tray was not in two halves, Plus a plastic engine cover to cover the top of the engine, it would have prevented the issue. Ford needs to stop cost cutting, poor design
Moniker is very lucky have you to call on taking it to most garages they would of shafted her and probably never find the problem your one of the good guys Alan 👍👌
Shafted her! Steady on, old chap!!
Maybe just a good hard rodding but no shafting involved (of the engine of course!)

Great stuff Alan your perseverance is what makes you a great mechanic , top lad keep the videos coming🚗🚗🔧🔧👍👍
Great job Alan, good catch, fair play👌👌👍🙂
If that fix fails then fit some guttering under the scuttle panel. Lol. Hope Monika likes the fix. Nice one Alan

I wonder if there is a ford recall on this. I remember they did eventually recall the mk2 focus for upgraded washer jets to be fitted.
Well sussed out Alan well done 👍

Reminds me of the mk1 focus pollen filters when the trim along the screen would leak
Good old ford , poor design poor quality parts poor manufacturing . Good to see a honest garage.
The Renault Traffic had the same problem
How about an engine cover?
Is this a fault on the 3 door hatch ka . If so Ford need to do a fix? Also the Fiat 500 uses this engine?
No it doesnt

Anyone that's ever owned a Honda civic at some point knows how good bathroom sealer is. 🤣

I think it's more when it's been jet washed and they doing screen and scuttle panel. next time it's washed with a jet cleaner i'd check again
Neighbour is wondering how I have a garage upstairs all that banging.
I still say that it was the power washer that caused it that little flow of water should not be able to make its way to the spark plug ??.
Rusty sparkplug ?
I think Monika should put in a claim with Ford for mental anguish for them allowing one of their vehicles to develop a misfire.
Fancy not designing a car sold in UK to cope with rain 😄😅😃😄🤸
What a crap attempt to stop water ingress by the manufacturer.
