    I love that people are still putting time and effort into vintage systems. If only the big three (Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft) put as much effort into their own histories 🤷‍♂️

    • @TigerChainsawVideoGames
      @TigerChainsawVideoGames  Рік тому +6

      I've always believed that if Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft did a "Legacy Release" each year for their old consoles they would be mega hits. How cool would it be if Nintendo put out one game a year (physically) for the NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64 etc.... and Sony and Microsoft did the same for their systems. Building a game in today's age is much easier than it was back then so it would be quicker. I think the payoff would be worth it for those companies to recognize and appreciate their history.

    Nice list! What's even better is that I've never heard about any of them! If I had to pick one immediately, it would be Blazing Rangers! Looks like a fun challenge! The homebrew scene is full of games that it's hard to follow all of them! I also like the "demake" versions of games like Final Fantasy 7 and the newly released Resident Evil 1 on NES! Hope to see a part 2 of this! Great video and keep up the good work!

    716 licensed game?!? I knew it was a lot, but that's amazing!!!
    I love a good homebrew! I played Micro Mages recently, and it was excellent! 4-player splitscreen with wall grappling, is awesome! So glad you featured this one 😀
    I'd heard of a few of the others, but I haven't played them. Project Blue looks like one I should pick up for sure!
    It was probably wise to limit it to physical homebrews, since there's about 6 gajillion digital only homebrews of heavily varied quality XD

    • @TigerChainsawVideoGames
      @TigerChainsawVideoGames  Рік тому +3

      Sure is a ton of games! I actually don't have a ton of knowledge on the NES as I grew up with the Sega Master System which only had 117 licensed games in North America! Micro Mages is so dope, I got to see it at Midwest Gaming Classic, and wow it was so cool. Project Blue is my under-the-radar game. I love the aesthetics of it and the gameplay looks incredible. I know there's a million roms and digital games, but as a physical collector I couldn't help but want these NES physical homebrews! They come with some nifty stuff too. Super cool that you have played micro mages. Thanks for watching buddy!

    It's curious... when you look at homebrew NES games these days, they seem to feature better color palette usage and animation than the original games. I don't think it's necessarily "using the hardware better" in a programmatic sense... it's just having the hindsight to see what was done with games, and then trying to use some of those techniques on an older platform. They make certain choices with modern gaming in mind, whereas the original NES devs... well, they were flying blind. Their models were simpler, so they were limited by what they thought was cutting edge, as they created it. Developers now can take a bit here, give some there... to coincide more with what modern audiences would expect.
    (I see this with Sega Genesis homebrew as well... the Genesis color palette was much more limited compared with the SNES, which made Genesis games look bad by comparison. I don't think people understood that... nowadays people make Genesis games that look so much better, using the palette in smarter ways. If you choose a palette that's too limited, it looks "muddy". You have to make the colors starker in contrast and hue. Ahh well, I'm rambling. But again, that's something that wouldn't necessarily have been on the minds of developers at the time, working with what they had.)

    • @mercster
      @mercster Рік тому +4

      Another thing that may be at play is, homebrew these days can include much more ROM space on the cartridge. Back then there were budgetary constraints ("Look, we can only afford to put 200k worth of chip space on this cart, do your best.")

    • @mercster
      @mercster Рік тому +3

      Heh, like even with the stylized lava in one of these games. A developer in the 80s/early 90s may have tried to make the lava look really cool with 7 different shades of red, limiting the rest of the palette for the screen. Nah, just make it stylized, and you can use colors elsewhere. Noone cares what the lava looks like, really. Hindsight is 20/20 :)

      @mercster Рік тому +3

      Another good example of this is the last Mario game released on NES/Famicom, "Mario's Time Machine". It was an edutainment title with not a whole lot of "arcade action", but the sprites, color usage, and animation was so much better than Super Mario Bros 3. It even had Yoshi, which SMB3 had to omit because of "hardware limitations." Same hardware... they just used it in ways that were more appropriate to newer graphical trends. What a difference 6 years makes!

    • @mercster
      @mercster Рік тому +4

      I don't mean to say NOTHING was learned about the base hardware since then, maximizing the hardware etc, just that I don't think that was the major factor in why these games look so amazing. I think it's perspective and hindsight that makes the biggest difference.

    These all look pretty great. And I love that they're real physical boxed games and all. Great stuff.
    I'm really hoping that with the recent announcement of "SNESmaker" and a bunch of other interesting things that have happened in the SNES scene lately, like the announcement of SNES Doom Definitive Edition that uses the "FX3" and a new SNES controller with rumble support as one example, that the SNES will start to get a lot of cool new physical games like this in the near future too. Xeno Crisis is a great start, but it came out 5 years after the Genesis version and does feel like a port rather than something truly made for SNES, so hopefully we get even more and better doing forward.

    Hi i have a question, are nes games like lizard, dataman and other homebrew games perfectly compatible with the Italian PAL A system? I ask because I recently bought the homebrew game sams' journey and after changing the region system by pressing reset 4 times the game started but it doesn't work well, there are glitches on the screen and after a while it freezes, I haven't found any explanations about it online and nobody knows if these homebrew games are actually compatible with all region formats or only with NTSC and PAL B.

    • @TigerChainsawVideoGames
      @TigerChainsawVideoGames  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching! That is an excellent question. I would reach out to the developers of the games you are interested in and ask them. They might have information on the game page where you order the games with compatibility.
