Snowblind was always my favorite by Styx. I can't usually pick a fave from a band but I was still in high school if I'm not mistaken and Styx wasn't my favorite band back then. They do have a huge amount of talent and you can't take that away from them and I don't mean to sound like I'm negative. They can still make me turn it up!
This was the song that got Tommy Shaw his job in Styx. Auditioned for his high pitched voice, needed for the harmonies on "Lady", this song, penned by Tommy himself, was all Dennis and JY and Chuck and John needed to hear. Welcome to the band, Tommy!
When "Crystal Ball" is performed live, Tommy does an extended guitar solo "walkabout" the stage and then they do another Chorus. Some rare times, Tommy will go back to the acoustic 12-string and do another verse originally written before he joined Styx. Styx had 3 lead vocalists and songwriters. Dennis DeYoung did "Come Sail Away" and Tommy Shaw did this one. They have a wide variety of songs in their catalog - something for everyone. James "JY" Young songs to check out are "Snowblind", "Young Man", "Midnight RIde", and "Miss America". Before Tommy Shaw joined the band for the "Equinox" tour and then this album "Crystal Ball", John Curulewski was the third guy with songs like "A Day". He also wrote and performed the intro track "Prelude 12" before "Suite:Madame Blue". Here's some suggestions for more Styx: Dennis: "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "CASTLE WALLS", "Queen Of Spades", "Lady". Tommy: "Fooling Yourself", "Man In The WIlderness"(Expanded version: ua-cam.com/video/biKrDFBp0ns/v-deo.html ), "Blue Collar Man".
I agree. Tommy Shaw was the missing piece of the puzzle for Styx. No coincidence that not long after his recruitment, "The Grand Illusion", one of Styx's most successful albums ever, came to pass and all that followed.
You are correct though they did have some memorable tunes before Tommy joined. Tommy add a pure rock and much more pop feel as well as his vocals which added a balance to Dennis’s style. They were a super star band at that point when they released Grand illusion and then again backing it with Pieces of Eight!
Tommy Shaw screwed over Dennis DeYoung and really Dennis and Tommy were both great song writers and it was there collaboration that made there success. Tommy Shaw didn't do shit when he was with Damn Yankees.
Go to the album Grand Illusion and find one of the great albums of the 70's. Great tunes throughout, Man in the Wilderness and Miss America, my favorites but every song on Grand Illusion are special.
I was at the Crystal Ball tour 45 years ago. It blew my mind! It was also my first date. Then I went back and heard them in October. Such a great band. Tommy Shaw leading the show. Hope you play a lot more!
STYX was considered a s super big popular band from about 1976 through a good part of the 1980’s! The synthesizer is the instrument that has that unique sound!

Biz! It’s me again. This band does not get its due respect they have earned. They are still playing live today and sound exactly like they did in the 70’s. They should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but the morons running that show don’t know jack shit about true rock stars! This is one of those bands you want to follow. They have at least 30 songs that’s are outstanding!
Heya Biz, Have you reviewed any talking heads yet? If not I would first recommend "burnin down the house" and second "take me to the river." Yer gonna be diggin that shit. Promise.

Wow, couldn't believe it when I seen you were reacting to this song. Crystal Ball is one of my 3 "go to" songs by Styx. "That sound" is Dennis Deyoung on keys (synth) - and the incredible Tommy Shaw's lead vocals and guitar solo.

A BUNCH OF THOSE 70'S POWERRRRR VOCALISTS BIZ! 😊

THISSSS IS THE PROGGY STYX BIZ, EARLYYYYY STYX, AWESOME STUFF! 😊
They are great live. I love Styx, and Tommy Shaw. What a talent.
That instrument is synth. Styx has 2 singers. The Grand Illusion is another great one with deep lyrics. You'll love it
THE WALL 👍
Actually 3 singers--James Young does most of the "heavy rock" songs such as Great White Hope, Miss America, Snowblind, and many others.
Yeah, one of my favorite lyrics "I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me. Or am I even in it's mind at all."
One of my favorite Styx songs, love the drop into the plethora of bars.
Such a classic. Such an awesome song
from an Awesome Band!
Great choice, Biz!
Nice one, BizMatik. Get to Suite Madame Blue (long version) when you can...😎😎
One of my favorites of all time. You need it on your playlist!! EnJoy
Nice to see you back. It's a keyboard/synth. Have u done Miss America? It's a harder one for Styx. A true jammer.

Thank you for your reaction. Yeah, that's lines.
Thank you too!
The sound you asked what it was is actually Dennis DeYoung playing a synthesizer, very prevalent for prog rock bands like Styx.
Cue that CSNY sound.
Hey BIZ, it's time to do Foreigner, Feels like the First Time. Studio version. It launched Foreinger into the stratosphere. Thanks, love you! ✌
Listen to Tommy Shaw and the children’s contemporary orchestra or Styx and the Cco.
This is the first song I've ever heard of Styx.

Been enjoying the old Rolling Stones record Biz. Thanks. Styx? Meh....
There's room for Styx and Stones. Even if they may break your bones

Wow, couldn't believe it when I seen you were reacting to this song. Crystal Ball is one of my 3 "go to" songs by Styx. Very talented band with 2 lead singers ( which a lot of people go back and forth who's better, but personally I just enjoy both equally). But today you were listening to Tommy Shaw ( amazingly, he still sounds the same 40 + years later). 1st time I seen him was early 90s with his supergroup "Damn Yankees" ( which also included Jack Blades of Night Ranger and the Motorcity Madman, Mr. Ted Nugent ). Incredible show, with Jackyl as the opener. 2 bands you should check out if you ever have some extra time. Anyway... keep on rocking, Biz !!!
