My first USAF assignment was as a public affairs officer with SAC's 461st Bomb Wing at Amarillo AFB, Texas. My office was near the building entrance and as a result I had a lot of visitors, probably because I always had color photos and other goodies to give away. One of my regular visitors was a CWO4 who had been in the Air Force for 30 years. During my four years at the base he gave me a good education about the Air Force. At one time he had been a B-36 flying crew chief and he had great stories to tell. He said the B-36 wing was so large he could, while in flight, walk and crawl out to all six engines to top off the oil reservoirs. He told me a lot of stories, but the ones about the B-36 were some of the best. I retired after 26 years, all in public affairs.
I guess the idea was...you would get unlimited miles?...no need to refuel?...I don't know...anyway... great presentation!...very informative...like always...thanks...
I remember as a kid among my multiple model aircraft, I had one of the B-36. I thought it was so cool because of it’s unusual engine placements and it’s size. It also went well next to my flying wing model. But until today, I never knew about the experimentation with atomic power. What a crazy idea for a war aircraft that could be shot down anywhere. What were they thinking?
I totally agree. It just does not make sense for a combat aircraft. One area that I was not able to cover due to time was a by-product of this program was the space shuttle Auxiliary Power Untis (APU) technology, but that was the only project that I could find that benefited from the $1B dollars spent from 1946-1961.
👍🏻👍🏻
The atomic age. The wonders they dreamed of.
We are very luck this concept went no further...
