    That apple one was actually hilarious. The apple obviously wanted nothing to do with this experiment.

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  9 років тому +14

      Sam Heaton all magnetic material is quite brittle, so the larger the magnet, the greater the impact. When two magnets like the ones in the video collide they will inevitably break.

      +Alkosept The reason the magnets didn't damage the apple so much is because the apple's round shape allowed it to slip out the side.

    • @carsonrush3352
      @carsonrush3352 9 років тому +15

      +Nik Yoo The same way you slide smaller magnets apart. You slide them away from each other sideways. If one's on the left and the other's on the right. Push the one up and the other down. They slide easily from what I know of magnets.

    • @Myreply59
      @Myreply59 8 років тому +4

      +Nik Yoo The danger with sliding is that they can flip and take off a finger or
      break a hand, or fly off and hit you in the face. Using a jig where you
      wedge them apart as they went together is the best way to do it.

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  10 років тому +35

      Hi RupluttajaGames . That's a great question. These magnets attract with the equivalent force of 116kg. To separate them, we use a specially designed jig with a wooden lever that is used to slide one magnet from the other.

    • @mattcosgrove72
      @mattcosgrove72 9 років тому +1

      first4magnets® so you slide a wedge in between the two magnets

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  9 років тому +3

      mattcosgrove72
      one magnet is held in place in the jig with the second over-hanging an opening in the jig. Then a large wooden lever is brought down on to the second magnet and slides the two magnets apart.

    I think the reason the apple is not easily crushed is due to it's irregular, rounded shape and smooth-skinned surface. You can sort of see the magnets lifting off the ground a bit, and going _around_ the apple rather than trying to go _through_ it, harmlessly launching it before colliding into each other.

    Why are these Neodymium magnets so powerful compared with a regular magnet?

    • @commentator3513
      @commentator3513 8 років тому

      neodymium aka really powerful magnet stuff

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  8 років тому +21

      +kc5hgv It is because of the magnetic properties of the elements used to make the neodymium alloy, which actually consists of neodymium, iron and boron plus traces of other elements. This allows the magnet to 'store' more of the magnetic energy used to give the material its magnetism when manufactured.

    How do you separate these magnets afterwards? I have a bunch of much smaller neodymian magnets and they are very difficult to take apart, can't imagine how to do it mechanically.

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  8 років тому +16

      +Benny Mirahy good question. The best way to separate small neodymium magnets is to use a hard surface and apply downwards pressure sliding one magnet from another until they are separated then keep the magnets moving apart in an exaggerated fashion until they are far enough apart to not jump back together. When separating magnets as large as these, we must use a jig. The attracting magnets are placed into the jig with one of the magnets overhanging an opening. A large wooden lever is then brought down on to the overhanging magnet that slides it away from the other magnet which is held in place.

    Why do the magnets shatter and spark when they shank off the apple?

    • @first4magnets
      @first4magnets  9 років тому +4

      carmium because the magnets are metallic, they cause a spark when they collide together. It is important to remember that the closer they get, the quicker they accelerate until they collide. Furthermore, neodymium magnets are brittle so when a collision occurs it is likely that bits will break off, plus the dust is flammable. This all adds to the sparks created.

      first4magnets® Thanks for that. I'm thinking that's why the smaller ones you can find have a chrome covering(?).

    • @suicidewafflez
      @suicidewafflez 8 років тому +1

      The larger neodymium magnets will destroy an apple easy. I have three in various shapes around this size and you can control them with your own hands from sticking together (not advisable though). The larger ones need reinforced styrofoam around them to keep them from flying into something and possibly crushing something, like your hand. Also, they must be handled by professional with the right equipment.
