@@fusion1203 As far as I know, it comes from computer programming. Look up any tutorial on a programming language, and it's probably the first thing you do.
I graduated with an AS degree in 2005 for Computer Animation. I never got into this as my career and now almost 20 years later I'm wanting to get back into 3d modeling and so far this tutorial is just amazing. I spent 10s of thousands of dollars for my education and it is just insane how much information is available online for free. Thank you so much!
Information, and TOOLS. Teenage me constantly fell into the "Open Source" rabbit hole of constantly trying out new tools and software for various things just because they're free and community managed... Blender is a great example for modelling, I use GIMP for photo editing (as probably the best alternative to Photoshop, also free btw)... I've come to the point not only is the learning all free on UA-cam, but the tools you're learning are also free! Look hard enough, and most common tools in the industry have free alternatives
Ha! I did my BA on Visual Communication Design and graduated in 2005. I had a 3D course where we learned basic Maya, but after graduating I focused more on graphic design and never continued with 3D. I was just thinking how amazing this tutorial is going and after seeing your comment, I decided to comment as well. Andrew, thanks for making it look simple and constantly reassuring us along the way. I've been wishing to get back into 3D for some time now, but as each year passed the first step felt even more daunting. Thanks to you, after 19 years, I was able to make that first step. Hopefully I keep going at it :)
I had bought a few online courses and they really show a lot (they explain pretty much every function) but this is the first time I've really enjoyed a tutorial. As mentioned in the previous part, you don't need to know everything. Praxis is almost more important, everything else comes with time. I can use the purchased courses perfectly as a supplement afterwards, but for learning and memorizing the basic functions, this tutorial is unbeatable! Thank you so much for your time and effort, you are just opening up the world of 3D editing to me. 🤗
"Now, some of you might have just discovered that your donut has disappeared." I was, indeed, starting to internally freak out a little. Thanks for the great timing!
@12:30 IMPORTANT TIP about the "Circle of Influence" that I learned the HARD way! If your proportional edit isn't moving JUST a part of the donut but the WHOLE donut, then like me, you've somehow scrolled the SIZE of your circle of influence to be SO big, that now you're moving you whole donut as if in Object mode. As a beginner I tried everything to figure WHY it was doing this. Finally, I decided that my best route to figure out what the problem was, was to begin anew with a new donut. Sure enough, I see the "Proportion Size (Smooth):" on the upper left and notced it was way smaller on this newer file. I was able to go back and fix my old bad donut file. Thank GOD. Hope that helps someone who messes up with the scroll wheel the way that I did.

I opened up blender today to give it a try, and I'm grateful for how precise and broken down these tutorials are. Back to basics is the way to go, and this so far is everything I need. I'm glad to see that intuitively some of the functions are the same across the board.

"Proportional Editing" was hard to find at first, but I easily found it once I realized your menu is all kind of smashed together at the header (at least compared to mine). I found it located more in the upper center of the window rather than the upper right. Just thought I'd say something, in case others struggled to find it like me :) This is excellent content by the way! Thank you Andrew!

I've been dabbling in 3d for too many years to count. I created and animated an Eagle Transporter from Space 1999 in Povray when there was no graphical front end, you had to code the shapes, distortion and movement in a text file. I played with the Blender Game Engine a few years back, throwing balls at a wall and dropping rain into puddles. Now I'm back and starting from square 1. Thanks for starting your series again for v4. I'm really looking forward to getting some great results. And when I make it to Hollywood I promise to put a donut in my first movie! 😁👍
When this dropped yesterday every 3D artist known to man grabbed the popcorn and strapped in for some viewing pleasure! BLENDER GURU 4 LYFFFFFFFFFFFFF! P.S would LOVE more intermediate level tutorials :)
I tried to learn by your tutorials 2 years ago and absolutely hated it. But now after using Fusion 360 and Solidworks for modelling some time it is actually ridiculously easy to understand what you are talking about. The hardest thing is getting familiarized with 3d software
Dear Blender Guru 🙏 I just did the monkey and am now on my way to those faboulous looking donuts - I started my blender journey years ago, but too often got distracted by something and stopped learning. Following your tutorial has made me want to really go all the way with blender this time - and I am happy to have found your great tutorials!! 😍thank you so much for your work!
Good look to everyone who just started! Keep at it! If you manage to reach the end of the donut series, a whole new world awaits you! Pro tip: Don't forget to save often!
first time i made the donut i gave up 80% into the build.. but now after i have done lots of other tutorials - I'M BACK BABY!!!.. challenge accepted!!! :D
Great News! I just made a donut-oid in Blender 4.0 !!! I've just watched previous versions of the donut tutorials but now I did it ... finally. So far so good! Now I'm saving a link to the playlist and wait for more! :D
In case someone runs into the proportional edit moving the whole object instead of deforming it problem, you simple have to scroll up with the scroll wheel, that's because you made the grey ring too big, this way it gets smaller, achieving the desired deforming effect. Great video!!
Learning 3D for fun and WOW these are good tutorials. It's people like you that make so many forms of art easy and accessible to learn. thank you so much for this!

NEVER GIVE UP! I've found many useless tutorials in my time surrounding blender but by far is he the most patient and in-depth teacher. if you make mistakes just rewind and undo to a point where you're on the same page as the vid and go again.
We'll see if I can push through or decide to carry on this possible skill to the future lengths, but it's nice to see someone out there putting decent educational tutorials for beginners without it being sectioned behind a obnoxious paywall. I appreciate the thorough and well thought out nature of these lessons, it's really carrying my motivation for this medium right now lmao
I'm using a macbook pro to do this.. found out that at 16:00 he uses alt click to select the circumfrence. I don't have alt haha turns out double clicking did the trick
I’m working on making my first donut now, but I gotta say, those last 40 seconds or so was the most valuable part thus far. It is a steep learning curve and we are in the middle of it and it does seem very foreign, but it’s been fun. Thank you thus far and thank you for the encouragement too.
I got a problem, that if I want to select the edges (like in the minute 16:08) I can't do it. What the problem was is, that "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" was on. Only if that one is off, you can select that edges by pressing "alt+left_click". I hope I could help those, who also got that problem.
thank you, for taking the time out to do this series, I really appreciate it some tutorials go quick over the hot key but with you its broken down at a beginner level
Thank you man honestly I tried blender a couple times but I gave up and now I'm giving it another try. Honestly your videos are helping me so much and I can't stop watching them it's like learning new things in blender every day.
at 3:15 right click wasn't bring up the specials menu, I don't know why this happened to me but I found the short cut to help. Pressing W will bring the menu up, from there you can click smooth shading or D to shade smooth. if anyone knows why right click doesn't work for me and how to fix it, i would be grateful
This was really helpful! If anyone seeing this comment rendered it and it didn't look great try setting it to shade smooth by angle instead of regular shade smooth
I have to say, even if im chinese, not so good at English and didn't know Blender at all before watching all this, im able to understand Guru's videos for 100% , thank you very much for such a high-level, excellent, professional tutorial!🔥
@@leokarasoviaif you continue watching you’ll see him explain the box. delete your donut then add a new one. immediately use the box afterwards, dont click anything else and it shouldn’t disappear
I would just like to say, this is the most helpful thing ever. I am really into animating, always have been - with simple lego figures and stop motion but ofc I've wanted to move on from that. I have had a go with Blender before but I haven't for the life of me figured it out. Just watching the first video, I've already got the controls and basics. Thank you.
At 16:00 if you’re stuck on edge select you might be struggling with your preference setting from the previous video. What worked for me was disabling the “Emulate the 3 button mouse” in input preferences. Now followed the steps he said and the edge of the donut and all the edges in that row should be selected in that row.
Hey hope you found it. If you haven’t, delete the Torus and add a new one. The ‘Add Torus’ option will be there. (Or press F9) I found the ‘Add Torus’ option disappears once you deselect your Torus after adding it. He explains it in the video too.
Thank you for making this so easy. I avoided blender for years because it looked really complicated. I'm so happy I took the plunge because I'm really enjoying it! 🤩
13:40 : I have a problem. My Propotionnal Editing is on : ON, but when i press "G" i grab my donut and the donut move, and i can't see the circle. Anyone can help me ? :)
In only 30 mins I managed to learn so much that I feel I had some sort of grip into the software and I was totally blank!!! You gained a new subscriber and I will watch more and more of your amazing videos! Thanks again
your video is way better than my 16-day-Blender-course which I totally wasted my money on and I didn't even understand 60% of what I learned from that course. But your video is absolutely easily-understanding!!! Very helpful!! Please keep it up!! Thanks you so so much!!. I should've gone through here earlier.
Sir, you are the Bob Ross of 3d Modeling. One can learn a lot from you but you also have calming voice, on top of the fact you support your watchers. "so what it looks different than mine, we are all on the fly here" its akin to his Happy little accidents.
not sure if someone else commented but a tip too for selecting the middle line! Click one of the verts, hold shift then double click and it will select the whole line! without shift and double click it selects the up and down verts of the line and not left and right. Something I learned when I was in Maya for 2 years
Thanks! Really enjoy these videos and how easy they are to follow. Informative and entertaining. Love that you took the time to do an update from Blender 3 to v4. Truly awesome!
Did these wayyy back (thank you for the excellent tutorials) and then didn't touch Blender for a while. Running through them again. ***If you're looking for Proportional Editing and it's not in the top right. The current version of Blender (fresh install for me today) has it in the top center. Looks exactly the same as on his screen, just slide your eyes left and click the circle-dot-target icon. Let's go!
I got let go from the VFX industry 4 months ago and ,even if 3D was not my departement, im having so much fun learning blender while looking for a job! Tutorial is really nice to follow, the pace is awesome and the explication are so clear!! Keep up the good work :)
I was in college back when Pixar was first touting its 3D stuff with Luxo Jr & Tin Toy. One of my friends was in Computer Science back then & was touting all the "3D artwork" he was able to do by entering what looked like a ton of numbers & code. I knew BASIC and some DOS, but I was also into drawing & painting -- all the work my friend was putting into 3D was really counterintuitive & "left-brain"ish, not the way the artists I knew worked at all. And everything since then just seemed to take 3D & computer art out of everyone's hands and keep it firmly in the hands of only those who could afford the fancy expensive software & machines. Realizing that we finally hit the point where we can put the intuitive hands-on work back into the hands of artists and not just coders is a huge relief. Making it available for EVERYONE to afford, instead of those with the $$$ is a huge high.
I have been using Solidworks, Inventor and other 3D engineering modeling software for years and Blender still has a learning curve for me because it is more art and creative based vs. engineering based. My experience in those software programs still help, but the learning curve, not as bad, is still there.
He has made "Donut" the "Hello World" of 3D ❤️🔥

I opened up blender today to give it a try, and I'm grateful for how precise and broken down these tutorials are. Back to basics is the way to go, and this so far is everything I need. I'm glad to see that intuitively some of the functions are the same across the board.
learned blender on the V2 of this series, forgot it all and now I'm back! It's honestly just as fun as I remember and the instructions are so clear its hasn't left me looking for answers. Thank you so much!
Hot key for proportional editing is “o”, and you can also change different formats of fall off by clicking the dropdown.

Bro do u think 3d world would be robbed by ai?
@@18th_angelo Yup
thank you! I was wondering why it was not working
Hi! I cannot get Smooth/Flat shade property through right click as Blender Guru told us. Whenever I do right_click, the donut gets unselected and no property appears. Would you be able to guide me about it?
I'm working in 3D field for 20 years, but I love following that tutorial like I never used a 3D software before ❤
"Proportional Editing" was hard to find at first, but I easily found it once I realized your menu is all kind of smashed together at the header (at least compared to mine). I found it located more in the upper center of the window rather than the upper right. Just thought I'd say something, in case others struggled to find it like me :) This is excellent content by the way! Thank you Andrew!
You helped me a lot.
Figured out you can also toggle it by pressing O
THANKS!!
thanks, i've wanted to model on blender for a while now but it's been quite difficult. the tutorials i've seen didn't have clear enough instructions. thankfully this was such an easy to follow tutorial and i'm finally starting to understand how blender works. again thank you!

My first time ever using Blender and you're making it so easy. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for updating this tutorial for 4.x Andrew. You’re a star.
He is the whole Moon... 😝
man u made my modeling experience alot more funny and easier, i sat there for 5 minutes making my donut twerk with the proportional editing.
doing the scale trick with the side made me feel like the best blender editer ever
Phenomenal tutorial. I never thought I could see so much progress in something as tricky as 3D modelling in such a short time.
Crazy to think that an individual UA-cam creator made the livelihoods of many people across the world
That's what they all say
I think you'll find that blend is indeed a word. 😉
I did the full series a couple of iterations ago, and I'm doing it again because they're great!
Petition to change the official Blender file extension to ".blende". 🥸
And so it begins
yo dude how is it going, achieved something yet?
Mans out here being genuinely SUPER helpful *and* encouraging dumpster diving. ++Respect.
I just finished part 1 and now part 2 is up didn't have to wait! 🙌
Good luck!!!
Don't give up when you see that the tutorial series is long. You'll the necessary skills you need to make whatever you need. Best of luck to you!

Whoo! Part 2! 👍
just me watching this for my 29th donut attempt
NEVER GIVE UP! I've found many useless tutorials in my time surrounding blender but by far is he the most patient and in-depth teacher. if you make mistakes just rewind and undo to a point where you're on the same page as the vid and go again.
We'll see if I can push through or decide to carry on this possible skill to the future lengths, but it's nice to see someone out there putting decent educational tutorials for beginners without it being sectioned behind a obnoxious paywall. I appreciate the thorough and well thought out nature of these lessons, it's really carrying my motivation for this medium right now lmao
"Things that are too perfect, just look fake" thanks for that guru
Such a great tutor Blender Guru.
A shame he never saw your donation. In place of Blender Guru, I thank you for making such a generous donation.
10:50 bro defeated all the nerds out here... "um actually... it's called vertex if it is singular" 🤓🤓🤓☝☝☝
These tutorials are awesome. Thank you for taking the time to put these together. It has definitely made the process of learning less overwhelming!
Bro this is acually the best blender tutorial i’ve seen. You just go so slow and talk about everything like its so nice W video🔥

Hi if anyone is having issues and can’t select the circumference with ALT use SHIFT key and double click in the middle of the edge at 15:20 portion
I've been re-doing this tutorial so many times to get it down that I can do this by memory. Thanks, Andrew!
Y’all me and my bro be fallowing this cours with the most trash pc and everything we do we’re like "gasp" "IT DIDNT CRASH!!"🤣🤣
Man I feel you. Always the small victories 🤣
the erm acthually meme reference 😭😭😭
I got a problem, that if I want to select the edges (like in the minute 16:08) I can't do it. What the problem was is, that "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" was on. Only if that one is off, you can select that edges by pressing "alt+left_click".
I hope I could help those, who also got that problem.
i got this problem too, is there any way i could do it without turning off emulate 3 button mouse?
It’s not on in mine and I still can’t do it!!
thank you, for taking the time out to do this series, I really appreciate it some tutorials go quick over the hot key but with you its broken down at a beginner level
This comment helped me out, thank you.
Thank you so much! I was already in tears😩

When I press F9 key, that radius and dimension window doesn't appear. I don't know why...😰

Great tutorials, coming back to 3D sculpting after a couple of decades and these vids are just the ticket
Thank you.
15:47, alt+click didnt work. Double click did
At 16:00 if you’re stuck on edge select you might be struggling with your preference setting from the previous video. What worked for me was disabling the “Emulate the 3 button mouse” in input preferences. Now followed the steps he said and the edge of the donut and all the edges in that row should be selected in that row.
@ 0:45 i dont see "Add Torus" at the bottom left can somebody help me?
Hey hope you found it. If you haven’t, delete the Torus and add a new one. The ‘Add Torus’ option will be there. (Or press F9)
I found the ‘Add Torus’ option disappears once you deselect your Torus after adding it. He explains it in the video too.
i dont get the add torus option for some reason
Same, 1 minute in and I’m stumped
Hey go to , Add >Mesh > torus again and you will find that option
@@frameowlstudio2543 thanks! Yeah just found that out later
click f9, it will get it back. also you can only get at first, and if you exit the shape, you lose it, and cant reacess it unless you press f9
Double Click the object and then press f9
Thank you for making this so easy. I avoided blender for years because it looked really complicated. I'm so happy I took the plunge because I'm really enjoying it! 🤩
So far, I've made a donut using your tutorials in versions 2 and 3... and now I'm starting 4. Amazing how a donut can take us all so far.

Absolute CHAD!
CONGRATS!!!
My experience in those software programs still help, but the learning curve, not as bad, is still there.
tip:
when selecting circumference with alt lmb if not working just select two vertices and double click the edge you want to loop
