      Oh nice to know. I am a newcomer to Canada from India where cricket is followed like crazy mad, and after moving to your great nation and i too have recently started following the National Hockey League :) Ashes is one heckuva tournament if you have the patience to sit through it for 5 days. The rivalry is intense. PS - I love your music mixes in all your videos, is there anyway we can get them from other than youtube. I am going on a road trip to Ottawa from Toronto and i want to experience the drive through the music in your videos.

      Venky Good idea about the music mixes. I don't currently have them posted seperately but I still have them as seperate files. I'll see if I can post them as files this weekend and I'll let you know with a message when they are up.

    Great video, Phil... Speaking of Rugby, The one and only time that I had to act as though I couldn't understand or speak a word of English was during the Hong Kong Sevens in 1999. Some of the European fans got a little too militant over their teams. I saw a few ugly encounters between fans of various teams, and decided that it'd be a great idea to blend into the background!

      Kaydrah Communications Wanderlust good plan! I tend to be pretty passive and relaxed when attending any kind of sport. I try to avoid the hooligans too.

      Highways & Byways i always point out that Shirley joke in real life to this day when someone says something like, "Surely you aren't tired.". I'll always say, "I am tired, and don't call me Shirley".

    the signs at 1:16 min. do you edit or the camera will have it or shows the location? How do you know all the signs and what it says on it?

    • @TransCanadaPhil

      I just draw them as best as I can using "The Gimp". I use a combination of the footage and Google Streetview to figure out all the signs.

      yup, I still have tons of footage I hadn't made videos for. Basically the entire length of from Glasgow all the way to Manchester through Huddersfield, to Leicester, etc. :-). It'll come.

      @@TransCanadaPhil how many roundabouts did you have to drive through on that major long distance trunk highway?

    • @TransCanadaPhil

      @@AsphaltPlanet1 The M series motorways don't have those but many of the A series do, including pretty major dual carriageways like the A6. My other video at around the min minute 32 part of video gives a pretty good example of one: ua-cam.com/video/0iCwAl4NwN0/v-deo.htmlm32s&fbclid=IwAR3v1ik-MZx-WYE99x6Ci7maBua5_a6nH-XicUWLpVtRV-pDKsg4N7R4nzs

      @@AsphaltPlanet1 My assessment is that there's pretty much no highway in western Canada that comes anywhere close to even the lightest traffic M-series highway from the UK (not even the Coquihalla). The TCH is similar to many of the larger/higher capacity dual-carriageway A-series of highways in England like the A-1 or A-6 which have a good number of roundabouts.

      Trans Canada Phil canada doesn’t have A series of M series roads (thankfully in my opinion) and there seems to be lots of A series roads that have interchanges in them.

    Excellent job and if you are a Jeremy Clarkson fan of Grand Tour Amazon prime and 2002-2015 BBC Top Gear he often calls this London-Oxford Chipping Norton-Birmingham motorway which was actually featured in race to Blackpool to which he wants to run out of diesel fuel on his UK & Canadian MPG Jaguar XJ. Not sure to which BBC radio station you listened in your rental car dab

    In regards to these 'Service stops' are they dedicated services stop or they small towns?

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  7 років тому

      J Groenveld They are dedicated service areas for the motorway.

    • @jgroenveld1268
      @jgroenveld1268 7 років тому +1

      Nice - we don't have too many service stops on our (New Zealand) motorway system and many of them happen to be small towns that happens to border the motorway. Often you do find yourself driving a wee ways off the motorway if you need a quite bite or locate a petrol station.
      My assumption is the British built completely new motorway routes hence the need for dedicated service stops vs what we did in New Zealand were most of our motorways were originally normal roads that connected such towns that were later upgraded to motorway standard routes.
      When I drove in the UK I was surprised how far the small towns were from the Motorways but they had good connections from and to the towns often almost Motorway standard connections but with green signage vs the Motorway blue signage.
      I often mistaken a Arterial road (A-Roads) for M Roads because of the green signage which denotes a motorway here in New Zealand the blue signage is for local routes.

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  7 років тому

      Yes that was my observation about the UK motorway system, it does seem to have been intentionally designed to weave between the towns and cities (at quite a distance) rather than running either through them or directly adjacent to them, but with a few km/mile connector road to the motorway. Canada's road system seems more like what you are describing of New Zealand. In Canada for instance the Trans-Canada Highway (especially in the western portion of the country) does not run around cities but basically runs straight to them and often through them. The highway started as an Oxcart trail and has been steadily upgraded over the years. Adding pavement, twinning / dual carriageway upgrades, adding a few grade seperarated interchanges at the busy junctions. So the Trans Canada Highway has kind of "evolved" over time to something that "kind of" resembles a modern motorway, rather than being built all at once as a "motorway" grade road as I get the sense in the UK.

    Speaking of British people tending to be more intellectually curious, my friend and I theorized it may be because BBC is publicly owned so it can present any kind of content to people with no control from the government and no corporate's hidden agenda. So the Brit are fed with genuine intellectual content and encouraged to contemplate on whatever around them.
    It's just our theory, though, at the end of the day.

It can be easily made to work outside the UK (although not officially sanctioned). I never miss, The Graham Norton Show, The Sky at Night, or Panorama. :-D

    You're about to have a bunch of commenters yelling at you for staying in the middle lane lol that lane is supposed to only be used for passing

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  7 років тому

      yeah I admit I tended to "plant" myself in a lane much more in the UK than at home. Left side driving made me a bit nervous about checking behind me and doing lots of lane changes. I wasn't 100% confident about checking my blind spot on what was now the left side of the car from the right side driver's seat. Plus the non-metric speedometer in the car threw me off. I'll get better with experience I'm sure :-D. The fact that I didn't crash or have any mishaps driving in the UK was an accomplishment in itself I felt.
