The House at Shiraz: A Mystery Unveiled
Parker Pyne, traveling through the Middle East, makes his way to Shiraz via monoplane, piloted by a young German named Herr Schlagal. During their journey, Schlagal recounts a troubling tale: his first passengers were Lady Esther Carr and her beautiful companion, Muriel King. Tragically, Muriel died shortly after their journey, and Schlagal suspects Lady Esther of murder, noting her unsettling behavior and a family history of insanity.
In Shiraz, Pyne visits the English consul and learns that Lady Esther lives in seclusion. The consul shares Schlagal's perception of her odd demeanor, mentioning her intense "dark, flashing eyes." Intrigued, Pyne writes to Lady Esther, enclosing an advert from The Times, and receives an invitation to visit her. During their meeting, Pyne speaks of England, noting Lady Esther's longing for home yet reluctance to return. He confronts her, revealing he knows she is not who she pretends to be.
Pyne exposes the truth: Lady Esther died during a fit of madness, accidentally falling from a balcony. In a panic, Muriel King assumed Lady Esther’s identity to avoid being accused of murder. As the new consul had never met the real Lady Esther, Muriel’s deception went unnoticed. Pyne’s suspicions were confirmed by her uncharacteristic responses to stories of high society and her yearning for a simpler life. Knowing Lady Esther’s parents both had blue eyes, Pyne realized the woman before him couldn’t be their daughter.
Pyne promises to help Muriel prove her innocence and reunite her with Herr Schlagal, offering a chance at redemption and a fresh start.
