Audio Book Agatha Christie Short Story: Parker Pyne Investigates 10 / 12 The Pearl of Price: A Parker Pyne Mystery Parker Pyne is part of a group exploring Jordan, traveling from Amman to Petra. His companions include Caleb Blundell, an American millionaire; his daughter Carol; Blundell’s secretary, Jim Hurst; British MP Sir Donald Marvel; archaeologist Doctor Carver; and Frenchman Colonel Dubosc. One evening, Carver shares the history of the Nabataeans, the traders who built Petra and profited from controlling trade routes. This sparks a conversation about honesty, wealth, and the riches of Blundell, highlighted by Carol’s extravagant pearl earrings, which frequently come loose. Pyne senses underlying tension within the group. The following day, the party hikes to a plateau to enjoy the view. Upon arrival, Carol realizes one of her earrings is missing. She is certain it was still in place when they reached the top; Carver had noticed it was loose and had tightened it for her. Despite an extensive search, the earring is nowhere to be found, and suspicion arises that it may have been stolen. Colonel Dubosc insists on a search to clear his name, which the others agree to, especially Blundell, who hints at personal reasons for his insistence. The pearl remains missing. Later, Carol seeks Pyne’s help in locating the pearl, determined to clear Jim Hurst, her father’s secretary and a reformed thief. She explains that Jim had been caught stealing from Blundell’s house, but she saw his desperation and convinced her father to employ him. Now, Jim has proven himself, and she loves him, though her father prefers her to marry Sir Donald. Pyne learns that Blundell wanted to be searched to avoid suspicion falling on him, fearing Carol might believe he stole the pearl to frame Hurst and prevent their relationship. Pyne quickly deduces the truth and confronts Doctor Carver. The archaeologist admits to stealing the pearl, using a piece of plasticine he carries for taking imprints. Inspired by the group's earlier discussion, Carver had deliberately pointed out the loose earring, using the opportunity to steal it. He planned to sell the earring to fund his archaeological expedition. However, Pyne reveals Carver’s plan was doomed-Blundell’s wealth is a facade, and the pearl is worthless, a mere symbol of a fortune lost in an economic downturn. Great story, beautifully narrated. Just spoiled by five advert breaks in a 33 minute audio plus another at the end… I know that UA-cam needs advertising to function, but please - in moderation!
added it in edit from my own collection, in the middle of putting together a video of some of the music I use in the audio books along with a few other tracks. other people have also have ask, thankyou
