I got me a Speed King from the early 80's that's got plenty of life left in it. VERY tight action with no squeak since I've sprayed problem areas with silicone wd40 but plenty of rattle.
"All new and alien technology of direct drive!" -Ludwig did it when my father was a kid.. "Oh... But look at this! Compression springs! Never has the world EVER seen anything li.." -Ludwig did it before time started..
That’s for sharing. You did everything I would have done when showing/comparing those three pedals! Great!
You’re welcome, thank you!
If you don’t mind could you possibly subscribe?
Thanks
Rubber pieces in the box are there for bass drum hoop protection. They long strip goes on the bass drum hoop. The small square pieces attach to the frame against the hoop. Works well on a ludwig 70's hoop.
Very interesting video!
It's not a toe stop, it's a rivet for the flat spring that keeps the connecting link in place. For some reason Ludwig has eliminated this feature, cutting cost I guess. The Monroe pedals like the one you show that broke were made from very poor quality steel. I hope these new pedals are made from better material. The weight doesn't matter as much as the alloy in the base metal, that"s where the strength comes from. It can be lighter and still be stronger, or not. I am a huge fan of the older Speed Kings from the 60's and before which I still play. Vitalizer Drums does a fantastic job refurbishing these older pedals, highly recommend. Nice video.
Products made in Taiwan are very high quality and much better than anything from China. DW has a factory there that also makes the lower price Gretsch drums to Gretsch's specs which are excellent. I have one.
I had a Speed King pedal in the past which was not satisfactory but I would definitely consider the newest model. Quiet and sealed bearings!
I need a kick so bad. Just got gifted a little ddrum kit. I have been playing guitar a few years to get my fill in music but now i am dying to play. The pedal that came with my kit is not responsive at all. Been looking locally for pedals not many here. Need to sell some gear to make room for kick pedal. Then cymbals. So stoked. Its been years since i played but used a speedking at least 20 years. Awesome video man. Great taste in kicks.
thank you sir just seeing this!
@producemusicathome I see they did update the speedking slightly. I wound up getting a cheap pedal on Amazon. I knew better. Lol. It's OK but I trusted the reviews. It's NOT pro level lol. Griffin pedal.
I mean, made in Taiwan sounds a whole lot better than made in China. Give em credit. 😂
My drum carpet has that speed king grease stain too lol
Mine too. I learned 35 years ago to put a piece of scrap carpet under the pedal
My '69 is golden. Just have to service them once in a long while. The yellow jacket and my early Swivo. are in the rotation too. All great pedals
69’ awesome! Thanks for watching
I have an original that I’ve done similar improvements like the new one comes with. Sugru is marvelous for adding a drum key holder & hoop pads.
I added Velcro to mine as well.
Great video man!
Ross Gillis thanks, yes they have done a great job with this pedal
Just bought one. Thanks!!
Great video! I had a re-issue for a while but wasn’t fond of the action. Has this always been your main pedal?
No, I used DW 5000 for a long while. I can get used to anything really. It depends on the music. I wouldn’t use this for a jazz group. Thanks for watching!
@@rainsong7327 Hi, I have never used those . Sorry. Thanks for reaching out and watching
I have a the new iron cobra 900 double pedal. Love the pedal to death but i really want to try one of these out just cause of Bonham lol
Do it. Will inspire u
So how do you like it after a few days? I am considering buying one soon.
RL E I would say go for it! I am happy. Thanks so much for subscribing!
My 1962 version broke as well after many years of playing and I threw it way..... :0( .....BUT......I still have the toe stop that I took off back in the 60's. I don't really need another drum pedal , BUT,, I may have to buy this new Speed King for the memories. At least it's not made in Commie China!!
Yes, get one !just cause!
@@producemusicathome ... Gosh , I may buy one for old times sake! I already have a early 90's Gibraltar double bass drum pedal on my Ludwig kit, plus an older design Pearl pedal that came with my 1986 Pearl maple kit and a back up Camco pedal from the 60's I used to carry around in case my Speed King broke on a gig. The pedal I have been Jones-sing for lately is the Rogers Dyno-matic, but the high end Tama and Pearl pedals and other brands , ETC., all look great as well.
I just got mine. It came with two rubber tabs. Do you know what those are for?
Hi, yes
One goes on hoop to protect. Other... get back to u
Goes on front bottom of frame where the holes are, see the nubs in the rubber pieces
Ludwig used to make a toe stop.
thank you sir just seeing this!
O.k., so by now you hate it and will sell it on reverb. Links please.
266 € en France , un peu cher pour du made in Taïwan, total foutage de gueule
Lighter weight doesn’t mean it is less strong.
Good point!
Funny guy !!
thank you sir just seeing this!
YOU SHOULD LEARN TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOU DRUM EQUITIMENT , DON'T BE ABUSIVE , PLAY JAZZ OR COUNTRY MUIC STOP HAMMERING HEAD BANGING NOISE !
lol
I’ve tried many, many others but keep going back. It’s home.
Pretty epic bro
Drum pedals on the kitchen table! Wife's not back from her walk yet obviously... 🤣
Hazze lol! She is actually not like that at all. She is awesome
I have a vintage speedking,compared it to a new one,as for the new one,same tension,same beater,same bass drum,no thanks,I'll play the old one,better quality
I watched your whole video in hopes that you would go over adjusting, and I was not let down. Cheers.
I got one today I definitely need to crank those springs some it's not even really wanting to hit hard. I bought it because I played one as a teenager and the Pearl pedal I have is too bouncy and you can hear accidental double strokes on my recordings. I hope hope hope this old reliable design improves that.
Clean off your bass drum hoop and put a small piece of grip tape on it. It helps hold your pedal on and protects your hoop.
I use pressure with a small piece of cardboard cause the tape leaves nasty residue. I toured for years so im up on all the tricks thanks though
I think it's really bad on Ludwig to not include the spider webs from the older ones. Really inconsiderate. ;)
Lol
I have one from 1968 and it’s a different pedal than my ‘83 Tama Camco or Pearl Eliminator. When I first got the pedal, the tension was so loose that I couldn’t do doubles with it. Tightened it up and it became a whole other pedal. You do have to work for it and that’s part of the charm with these Speed Kings! Thanks for the in depth review and comparison between the three models.
Hanging with JT thank u! Yes!
Is it possible to flip the cam upside down on the speed king? I have a kick trigger that need the beater to be mounted from the bottom of the cam.
Hi
No
I started laughing at the ikea part.
Microphones don’t have sound.
I broke mine in the same spot during a gig. I always brought a second speed king just in case. Good thing I did.
thank you sir just seeing this!
Hello from Espana...,great vid Thx...could explain the difference in feel of the SK to other pedals...? Thx
Thank u.
It takes more effort to play a speed king and therefore makes your playing more physical. It doesn’t respond as quickly. Not so speedy actually!
@@producemusicathome Hi..I’ve only played a SK a few times very briefly but I was very intrigued by it...but I seen a utube demo of the Ludwig speed flyer & SK & now I’m more intrigued by the Speed flyer...il send you the vid ..il have to go to a drum store & try both...have you tried the speed flyer ?....here you go...it’s a good demo....ua-cam.com/video/kfYLFOxmPX0/v-deo.html
I bet this guy gets sidetracked a lot.
I actually don’t! Very focused. Focused on making this video at the time. Lol
So the new reissue 2020 iz made in Taiwan?.....yeh you sounded a tad disappointed....lol
bonzoligist yes, i am a bit, thanks
@@producemusicathome yeh that makes two of us then, oh well its still a good pedal, would you say its the same as any other direct drive pedal or a different feel all on its own?
bonzoligist ya, no issues with it so far. I think it is definitely a unique feel
Definitely sounded disappointed.
