    I got me a Speed King from the early 80's that's got plenty of life left in it. VERY tight action with no squeak since I've sprayed problem areas with silicone wd40 but plenty of rattle.

    "All new and alien technology of direct drive!" -Ludwig did it when my father was a kid.. "Oh... But look at this! Compression springs! Never has the world EVER seen anything li.." -Ludwig did it before time started..

    Rubber pieces in the box are there for bass drum hoop protection. They long strip goes on the bass drum hoop. The small square pieces attach to the frame against the hoop. Works well on a ludwig 70's hoop.

    It's not a toe stop, it's a rivet for the flat spring that keeps the connecting link in place. For some reason Ludwig has eliminated this feature, cutting cost I guess. The Monroe pedals like the one you show that broke were made from very poor quality steel. I hope these new pedals are made from better material. The weight doesn't matter as much as the alloy in the base metal, that"s where the strength comes from. It can be lighter and still be stronger, or not. I am a huge fan of the older Speed Kings from the 60's and before which I still play. Vitalizer Drums does a fantastic job refurbishing these older pedals, highly recommend. Nice video.

      Products made in Taiwan are very high quality and much better than anything from China. DW has a factory there that also makes the lower price Gretsch drums to Gretsch's specs which are excellent. I have one.
      I had a Speed King pedal in the past which was not satisfactory but I would definitely consider the newest model. Quiet and sealed bearings!

    I need a kick so bad. Just got gifted a little ddrum kit. I have been playing guitar a few years to get my fill in music but now i am dying to play. The pedal that came with my kit is not responsive at all. Been looking locally for pedals not many here. Need to sell some gear to make room for kick pedal. Then cymbals. So stoked. Its been years since i played but used a speedking at least 20 years. Awesome video man. Great taste in kicks.

      @producemusicathome I see they did update the speedking slightly. I wound up getting a cheap pedal on Amazon. I knew better. Lol. It's OK but I trusted the reviews. It's NOT pro level lol. Griffin pedal.

    I have an original that I’ve done similar improvements like the new one comes with. Sugru is marvelous for adding a drum key holder & hoop pads.
    I added Velcro to mine as well.

    My 1962 version broke as well after many years of playing and I threw it way..... :0( .....BUT......I still have the toe stop that I took off back in the 60's. I don't really need another drum pedal , BUT,, I may have to buy this new Speed King for the memories. At least it's not made in Commie China!!

      @@producemusicathome ... Gosh , I may buy one for old times sake! I already have a early 90's Gibraltar double bass drum pedal on my Ludwig kit, plus an older design Pearl pedal that came with my 1986 Pearl maple kit and a back up Camco pedal from the 60's I used to carry around in case my Speed King broke on a gig. The pedal I have been Jones-sing for lately is the Rogers Dyno-matic, but the high end Tama and Pearl pedals and other brands , ETC., all look great as well.

    I watched your whole video in hopes that you would go over adjusting, and I was not let down. Cheers.
    I got one today I definitely need to crank those springs some it's not even really wanting to hit hard. I bought it because I played one as a teenager and the Pearl pedal I have is too bouncy and you can hear accidental double strokes on my recordings. I hope hope hope this old reliable design improves that.

    Clean off your bass drum hoop and put a small piece of grip tape on it. It helps hold your pedal on and protects your hoop.

    • @producemusicathome
      @producemusicathome  2 роки тому

      I use pressure with a small piece of cardboard cause the tape leaves nasty residue. I toured for years so im up on all the tricks thanks though

    I have one from 1968 and it’s a different pedal than my ‘83 Tama Camco or Pearl Eliminator. When I first got the pedal, the tension was so loose that I couldn’t do doubles with it. Tightened it up and it became a whole other pedal. You do have to work for it and that’s part of the charm with these Speed Kings! Thanks for the in depth review and comparison between the three models.

      It takes more effort to play a speed king and therefore makes your playing more physical. It doesn’t respond as quickly. Not so speedy actually!
