When you get a 96 year old ace in a 109, for the love of christ, put a couple cockpit cameras in there and mike him up so we can hear what he has to say. What a lost opportunity.

Nazi's are a members of a political ideology, not a race if you wanna be sooooo correct (Yes i know "so" is spelled with a single O, the extra O's are for comedic effect, just so we're clear ya dorkward)
But dude, okay i forgot an accent when writing a quick YT comment. Was the first sorry not enough? Want a handwritten letter asking forgiveness for the errors of my ways? An apology for not taking second semester German over a useful thing like a trade in college?

Pedro Amézquita I agree, yes it may be a 109 AIRFRAME, but these are Spanish licensed built by Hispano Aviacion meaning it is not a Messerschmitt, powered by a merlin engine, the easiest way to tell is the exhausts from the engines should be on the bottom of the nose as the 109 had an inverted engine, the Daimler Benz DB-605. it’s the same with the CASA built version of the He-111 which also is powered by the Merlin.

He was not 96 years old. As soon as they fired the engine he was 20 again.
I saw a similar event at a airshow where a German vet sat in the cockpit of a Foke-wolfe 190. He instantly remembered all the controls and spent the next half hour back in 1944. He laughed, cried, and talked to his dead friends. Then he was done. When he got out, he was 90 again, but I think he had made peace with some old ghosts.

It's good to see German veterans receive the same amount of respect and recognition as their Allied counterparts. Those who make political statements based on their personal understanding of history are missing the point. There is always a measure of respect for the enemy among soldiers, particularly among airmen, due to the fact that they all shared the same dangers, survived a horrible war, and perfected a set of skills that made them exceptional warriors.

Despite the ugliness of war, there was a certain honor or chivalry between German and Allied pilots, both in the Great War and WWII. RAF ace Douglas Bader - a legend on both sides by the time he was shot down over occupied France in August 1941 - had lost his legs in a pre-war aeroplane crash during training. Consequently, he flew with wooden prosthetic legs. When he bailed out, Bader's wooden legs remained behind in the stricken aircraft. After being taken captive, Bader was received cordially and with respect by his Luftwaffe counterparts. German experten (ace) Adolf Galland, Geschwaderkommodore of JG 26, sent word via the Red Cross to British authorities that Bader needed a replacement set of legs and offered them safe passage to drop off a replacement. Hermann Göring himself gave the green light for the operation. The British responded on 19 August 1941 with the "Leg Operation" - an RAF bomber was allowed to drop a new prosthetic leg by parachute to St Omer, a Luftwaffe base in occupied France - and Bader had his prosthetics back. Galland escorted Bader on a tour of his base, and allowed the British ace to sit in his personal Me-109 fighter. Bader sat out the war as a POW, three years of that time at the infamous Colditz Castle, due to his many escape attempts are previous less-secure facilities. Bader was freed by advancing U.S. Army forces on 15 April 1945.

I can't imagine what it would be like for this veteran Luftwaffe pilot to sit in the seat again of this great machine after 74 years ago. From Australia. 😲🙂🇭🇲🦘✌️👍👋
