About this video: What I found in the bee yard.
Over the past week I have been visiting the bee yard at the farm to prep the hives for their upcoming splits. I did not take the cameras but I did take my son. We worked for several hours and I found something I didn't know was missing.
This Channel:
Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.
A little about me:
I am a person who believes you are never to old to learn something. Be it beekeeping, farming, raising chickens, painting, filming and editing video, making wine, beer, bread, cheese, and other fermentation consumables, play guitar etc... If I see something I want to try I start it immediately. If there is one thing I could choose to pass along to my children this would be it. Never be afraid to try. My wife famously told me once that if you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at it. I am bad at quite a few things.
I hope you find my beekeeping videos fun and entertaining as well as get something out of them. I hope I inspire someone to get out and try something new. If you do enjoy my videos, please take a moment to spread the word about this channel and help it, and myself, grow. Have a great day and BEE Happy!

Great video. I usually video "As Is" meaning, if a dog barks, wind blows, I hear it and you do too. Shadows, I see them/you see them. I just concentrate on what I'm doing and hope people see & hear the best way I can show it. For me I guess it's just "Do what I do and share it" to the best of my abilities. Keep them coming.
Awesome. I usually spend about 6-8 hours a week editing. Maybe one day I'll let a full length uncut video fly and see if people watch it. Thanks for stopping in to have a look. I really appreciate you. Take care.
I have told many o people that filming adds another layer to complicate the process. There are times that I do not take the camera for the same reasons, I just want my time with the bees and not have the added stress. The banana smell, oh how lovely it is. LOL.
I've heard it from other UA-camrs as well, not just beekeepers.
@@apveening Yep, whatever the task is. Filming adds a layer that complicates any process. I was going the route of 2 cameras and decided against it. It just complicates a hobby that I want to enjoy.
It does ad a layer of complexity. Sometimes I do a 3 camera shoot. Yikes!
@@BugFarmerBees That'd be to much for me. I have 3 GoPro's and a Nikon, but only use 1. I just can't see adding that level of complexity. I do enjoy the multi camera look though.
It still amazes me that I can stand next to the hives and the ladies genuinely don’t bug me!
Me too. I love to look at the bees in the morning sun just after they start leaving to forage. It is awesome how they fly in and out so fast and just disappear and reappear into the ether.
Sounds like you got your mojo for bees back. Glad to see your happy. I always look forward to your videos on Fridays, keep them coming!
Well.... I never really lost my mojo but it was starting to feel like a job. It was nice to just enjoy the process of working the bees.
Sir, you are an inspiration to us all. It takes courage to present oneself to the world, doubly so when it's sharing something one loves.
Your family is blessed for having you in it.
That may be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you.
@@BugFarmerBees It is heartfelt. I know you're still a young buck but your videos make me think of my grandfather. He hasn't died, just to be clear, but he too loved bees. He got me started on the theory (it's a long story albeit a humorous one). As a man who has bees, I am sure you can sympathize with my grandfather, he discovered he is actually deathly allergic to bee stings.
I have no doubt someone will see your videos and be inspired to become a bee keeper. I know I was when I saw your first video.
Though the Atlantic stands between us, receive my most heartfelt greetings from Spain. May your bees be healthy and may all your flowers bloom!
It's always important to take the time to find the real root of the joy it brings. Don't record if you don't want to. As always thanks for sharing, I know it can cause extra work!
I was nice to not feel the pressure of filming. Just me and the bees. I will try to do that more often.
I don't mind if others video me but I would much rather just enjoy the process of doing the bees often with one or more of the family members and solving whatever those girls throw my way. Thanks for sharing
Next week I have a cameraman for a bit. :-). Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to comment.
*Yes, we all have that "Forget to Enjoy" factor. I've trained myself to enjoy while doing it. I basically don't care too much when i upload and if the video is movie grade. I also don't need to edit much anymore, I get most things done in one shot. It just takes time. I do remind myself often to enjoy this even if i won't be able to make a video. I pretend people are with me and i just talk as i go haha*
I tend to do the same. I talk myself through what I see as part of my decision making process. Thanks for stopping in to have a look. I really appreciate it. Take care.
Great to hear it’s bee-coming a family affair! Thanks for the video
The flow is kicking off here. Trees are in bloom everywhere! Let the flow begin!
00:20:56. You gave me a heart attack... the queen!
Me too! That was a close call. Another thing on the list of "don't do that again" things :-)
Enjoyed the video. Have a great weekend.
Thanks. I appreciate you stopping in to have a look.
Hi Steve! Bob Ross fan here 😊 I am more present for the bees without the camera running. Also, my camera gets stung more than I do! 😂 Happy keeping 🐝
I have bees attack the dead cat on the mic all the time. t makes for great audio :-)
@@BugFarmerBees I don’t have a dead cat on my camera 🤣 but they still don’t like it!
Great video.
Thanks. Do you have any more Crynock bee genetics for the beeyard :-)
It looks like you have a lot of frames in that hive that needs rewaxing so they will stop doing the wonky comb an building off the foundation. I keep a wax stick in my pocket all the time just to do rewaxing if I find it while I am in the hive .
That is a fantastic idea. I will keep one in the go bag and the Black hive from now on. Thank you for the tip.
I'm going to use that style (Bee Barn) of frames in at least one hive. Do you prefer that size frame?
For bee barns I think the deep medium combo works well for me. I have seen folks use double deeps for the bee barn and that works fine as well. I guess what I am saying is that it's really personal preference.
I'm late, I somehow missed this video but ...the production quality of your videos is high, a lot higher than the other beekeepers I follow ( Mr. Ed, Dirt rooster, mike barry, AussieMike ... and other random bee videos) .. and those guys only make 1 or 2 videos a month.
One long video a week, plus your wife's, must be almost like a 2nd job ..
I bet if you also went to 1 or 2 videos a month most people wouldn't mind,.
Thank you for all of the kind words. It is a lot of work to put these together but I have a routine down now so getting a video completed for each Friday is doable. Thank you for stopping in to watch. You are what makes it all worth while.
Do you already have 2 week old drones where you are located? Here in Indiana we are not close to breeding season.....they are just getting into building up numbers.
I am in Metro Atlanta and I have already had swarm cells at my farm yard, I did splits last weekend. Video will be out next week. :-)
A good coat of wax on that plastic foundation will help prevent wonky comb
I will be adding some new frames this year with lots of wax on them.
Why did you paint the crynock (sp?) queen this year's color? This early in the season I would expect her to be last year's queen (or maybe even older).
And I think that nuke should have gotten at least one frame of brood together with the resources and/or the queen caged upon a frame so she could lay.
I didn't mention it but it was a different queen. The old queen had a short triangle body, this queen was unpainted and had a long abdomen. She was either a late fall queen or recently mated and laying. Either way, I believe this was her first season laying so she went green :-)
@@BugFarmerBees Thanks
Do you put extra wax on your BeeCastle frames or do you just go with what they put?
To be honest it really depends if I have any wax available. If I have wax available I will always re-wax my frames regardless of where I get them If I don't....... well, I don't :-)
She's in my box I had to borrow her
That sounds like something hecklefish would say :-). Do you know of hecklefish? ua-cam.com/users/thewhyfiles. :-)
@@BugFarmerBees no I don't know him but everybody needs a friend like that
What type of hive is that?
It's a bee barn: ua-cam.com/video/j3uxw3oT-zc/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
