    This Channel:
    Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.
    A little about me:
    I am a person who believes you are never to old to learn something. Be it beekeeping, farming, raising chickens, painting, filming and editing video, making wine, beer, bread, cheese, and other fermentation consumables, play guitar etc... If I see something I want to try I start it immediately. If there is one thing I could choose to pass along to my children this would be it. Never be afraid to try. My wife famously told me once that if you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at it. I am bad at quite a few things.
    I hope you find my beekeeping videos fun and entertaining as well as get something out of them. I hope I inspire someone to get out and try something new. If you do enjoy my videos, please take a moment to spread the word about this channel and help it, and myself, grow. Have a great day and BEE Happy!

    I run my hive tool down the top of the drone brood enough to damage the cappings and the bees will pull them out so the comb can be reused. I thought I heard a swarm near the beginning of your video. Then you saw them! Thanks for consuming.

    Here's a tip I got last year and it works. You will need a plastic and metal excluder. Put both together on a queen right hive. Place your laying worker hive above the excluders. Within 7 days, the laying workers will be killed or will stop laying. I've mentioned this to other beekeepers here in Michigan. It's always worked.

    I take my hive tool and scrape frames like that. The bees will clean up and use what they can. I have also found that when the hive is that big with the laying worker that only a strong hive with a strong queen can fight that. Maybe next time do a combine with a strong hive. I have also seen people freeze frames like those and put them right back into use.

      All great information. After reading the comments I think it may have been a queen that petered out and started laying only drones. If that is the case the bees should dispatch her once the new queen emerges and gets mated. We will know in a few weeks. Thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it.

    I would shake those frames like u r doing and then freeze the frames with the drone brood which will kill the mites also. Then put those frames right back into the hive and the workers with clean them out and u can retain your comb. Possibly use a scratching for to pull the drones out after freezing. Then put frames back.

    Nice job on the swarm. Quick like bunny. Seems Like I get one laying worker hive every year! I shake them out and freeze them. I read that shaking them out is not effective. Often times there are more than one laying worker and they have the ability to fly unlike a true queen.

      @@BugFarmerBeesin the same box that I put the swarm in I have an inner cover that somebody gave me and it has a big opening on it and I laid the 2 queen cage on top of the frames. My first time banking queens, I figured since they came from that swarm that the odds of them trying to kill them would be less. They were still still alive yesterday, haven't check today yet, I'll go check them in a minute since you said something and let you know.

    About that laying worker, have you considered the possibility of a drone laying queen?
    As for the difference between a hatched and a killed queen cell, a hatched queen cell has a nice, circular opening at the bottom, a killed queen cell usually has a rough opening somewhere at the side. I wish you had shown us that opened queen cell.

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 місяці тому +2

      Thank you for that information. I can say it was a hatched cell from a round opening. I never knew the side chewed ones were killed cells. Now I know. It is entirely possible it was a queen that petered out. The good news is I have a laying queen in the box now and all is well. That is some inside info from an upcoming video so don't spread it around :-). Thanks again for the information, You have made me a better beekeeper.

    The top Queen excluder belongs under the deep. The bottom deep should have only had 1 frame of drawn comb with the Queen and the rest foundation. The bottom queen excluder is above the bottom deep, 2 supers, queen excluder, and deep with all the brood. If you want them to make a queen, put an entrance for the top deep. If you don't, come back a week after doing the Demaree manipulation and remove the emergency cells. If you allow the hive to run with 2 Queens, they will make a lot of honey. After your nectar is done just separate the hive into 2 colonies. ua-cam.com/video/mQ6CE8nCbHQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=NHBKATraining

    Quick question. Got my new package a week and a half ago. Just checked them. Lots of comb, some covered comb - I assume it looks like honey store. Couldnt’ locate eggs, covered brood. Didn’t want to keep the hive open for too long. Should I be looking for the queen since I didn’t see any eggs or larvae Or is it too soon. Thanks, love your site, sorry for all the ????s

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 місяці тому

      It is usually 9 or 10 days before the any brood is capped. If it was my hive and I had drawn comb ready for the queen to begin laying I would wait 9-10 days. If after 10 days I didn't see any capped brood I would introduce a frame of eggs from another hive if I had one.

    You spent too much time, energy and resources on that laying worker Hive. When you first noticed that you should have done a paper combined with one of your stronger colonies, they would have killed the lane workers. Then after a week or 10 days you could have made a split again and taken some fresh brewed and eggs from the strong Queen and move that box back onto its stand and let him raise a real Queen. Now I would shake those bees off and feed that drone comb to your chickens. And still do a paper combined. It's likely there are multiple laying workers in that colony. Every time you add a queen or a cell they think they have a queen because they have brood pheromone even though it's just a bunch of drones. And yes, Lane workers will try and raise a queen through a queen cell but it's really nothing but a drone.
