    About this video:Beekeeping in 13F weather. Winter beekeeping
    Today we will be checking on the bees in both bee yards to see if they are still alive after temps in the low teens.
    About this Channel:
    I hope you enjoy beekeeping and this video. If you are interested in becoming a beekeeper or experience backyard beekeeping for yourself have a look at some of the videos on this beekeeping channel as well as videos from beekeeping creators I have listed below.
    Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.

    Hey Bug Farmer! Great to see you. I’ve learned that as long as I make sure the hives have honey or honey&fondant, as well as are semi-free of varroa and thus free or semi-free of viruses, the cold is never really something to worry about.
    I also am a fu believer in wrapping the hives for better insulation, and HEAVILY INSULATING THE TOP OF TGE HIVE-this last one is key!
    Glad to see your hives are all doing well. Expanding to a third hive this year. Enough for me. Both hives are thriving!!

      Hey Brad. Great to hear from you. I hope winter is going well in the big city. The girls have been flying here for a couple of weeks now and I think the worst of winter has passed. Maybe a couple more week with cold night but the new season is ramping up. Good luck with your third hive.

    Don't worry or be anxious, the Lord will help you through any circumstances. I sometimes pray for my hives. The good thing about the cold is that the bees won't be out flying and burning resources. Mid 60's here, bees flying, and I'm feeding them. Hope we all have a smooth transition into spring with no surprise cold snaps.

      I fed a couple of gallons here at the house from an open feeder and they took it all. Today it was in the 60's and I put out the pollen sub. Thank you for the reassurance and for stopping in. Take care.

    Im proud to say my 4 hives pulled through the cold snap the temps are back up into the 70's now Im worried they are going to run out of food. I put a 5lb. pack of Hive Alive Fondant on each of the hives they havent even dug into them as of yet. Good to see you still out after them keep that Smoker HOT and the smoke cool, Have a great weekend. Jack

      Our temps turned around too and it has me worried. I don't want to have the same experience as last year where everything blooms and a freeze comes in and wipes out the nectar. My fingers are crossed.

    13° is and even worse with the wind chill. A couple weeks ago we had -16°and 50 mph winds. I lost 6 colonies . They were late splits and the clusters were not big enough. They had plenty of food over the cluster but still froze out. The hives with larger clusters did fine.

      @BugFarmerBees  8 місяців тому

      Yikes. Way too cold. I hope the remainder of your colonies make it and you can get some good splits out of them in a couple of weeks. I should be starting my splits in about three weeks.

    Bug! Sorry it's so cold there. Here in Anchorage we are in our second week of below zero F temps. -20F at my house this morning. The girls in my Bee Sauna (my version of the Bee Barn) have been keeping the temps between +78 and +80F according to the temp sensor I have in there. i have not opened up that hive since the beginning of October!
    Keep your fingers crossed my girls will make it until the temps hit above freezing...usually in March for me. That is when i will feed them again.
    I am sure your girls will make it just fine as long as your weather isn't totally schizophrenic like last year.

      I am glad to hear the saunas are holding up. I just checked all of my bee barns and they are all doing well. In a couple of weeks I will be doing splits for sure. I have been wondering how the saunas were doing because you haven't uploaded in a while. It's really nice to hear from you.

    Hey There. I think you can relax about the cold weather. Bees can survive the cold as long as they have a good population, have food, are dry and the mite load is under control. Their ability to cluster will help them survive.

      I know but I still get nervous. I have a lot riding on this season. Thanks for the reassurance. I really appreciate you. Take care.

    Hello, why did you decide not to run your hive heaters this winter?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  8 місяців тому

      I just wanted to see how the bee barns worked without heaters. No worries though, I have something special planned for next year, :-)

    Can I ask why you aren't using the heaters this year? Love the channel! Your heater boxes were awesome, and I planned on doing the same thing. I'm a first-time bee keeper this year. Either way, I was jw.

      I just wanted to see how well the Bee Barns did on their own. I will likely use them on some hives next winter.
