@@Serge_Korr_Music Yes Your are almost there:-
Dhol/DoL'L'u :- Is always larger (drumheads are equal/almost equal size) . Tied with rope and wore like a garland. Mostly works as Bass/Base drum for the dance/group song because of loud sound.
Dholak:- Most widely used. It's a handy smaller size for folk & bhajan(devotional) songs, fusion. one drumhead is mostly for bass/base sound and the other (main head/ smaller head) for improvisations. Ref:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dholak
      Ref:-
      Dhol:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhol
Dholki:- some people use Dholak & Dholki terms interchangeably. But there is an elongated version that looks similar to mrudanga (mridang) in shape and even has black paste(karane')but not as matured/advanced as mrudanga because it has a single layer of leather(goat's skin if I am not wrong).

    Wow,
    Sir Prasad ji ,
I have not seen any UA-cam channel answering all the comments, including seeing a reply to "hi". .......Amazing..
I am new to all these musical world.
All I wanted to enjoy the Carnatic music, like when I hear a song I wanted to enjoy the ragas and Thala of the music or at least the "swarathanas" of each word or letter. Failed miserably. I thought since I don't know the basics of Carnatic music and tried to learn the vocal part and failed. Basically any song is heard, I don't know which is the "swaram" of each word of the song is sung.
( probably I may not be fit to enjoy Carnatic music)
Then I started picking particular raga alone and hear those songs in those ragas. I picked Abheri and ahiri as they are easy to recognize. I could relate "Nagumo" and "panimithi mukhi bale" to some songs of these ragas. But my attempt failed as there are so many ragas so even musicians get confused.
Finally and finally I realized that at least I have to learn the Thala part of it. When I do some Thala with the song, if I don't look at the "vidwan", then I could never sync my Thala with him. Which made me reach here. I don't have a career in this as I am over 60 years. But don't mind putting a little effort in enjoying Thala at least.
Will it be foolish to at this age?
Waiting for your valuable comment on this. ( I am doing "Tha, thi, thom num" on table top with respective hands for your lessons 1,2,3,4.)
    Regards
    Vijay(liamgetep@gmail.com)

It is good and will match leather n wood mrudanga in most aspect. Only one thing I noticed is the karane part in traditional mrudanga has more deeper sound because leather is much thicker compared to synthetic membrane.

    • @letslearnmrudanga
      @letslearnmrudanga  4 місяці тому

Not sand. It's clay. You are right in the initial days , hundreds of years ago; mrudanga s body was made of clay( mruth= mitti) I have explained in What is mrudanga ' the first video. please watch

I think s.r.i mridangam is the best one too be used as the expression of Maa saraswati....after all knowledge (maa.. saraswati) it self is against the cruelty ,then why we are practicing it through cruelty

Very well said 🙏 Thanks for the comments . Please share the videos so that others also make there mind to avoid leather & wood.

Dear sir If wood can be used for Housing purposes and animal meat is used for consumption purposes then nothing wrong in using wood for mridangam and animal skin for the sides. More animals are killed for consumption everyday than for using in mridangam. Please talk abt animal cruelty where it is relevant. As such the number of mridangists using animal hides is very very negligible and it could be 1 or 2% only. As a professional over 40 years of experience and having played other types of mridangams (invluding SRI) I can authoritatively say that no mridangam maker has come anywhere near the original tone produced by Wood and animal hides. Hope you understand sir. The weight of the mridangam has a direct influence on its tone and by reducing its weight and using synthetic materials we are compromising somewhere on the tone and tenor.
