- Here's the first Mrudanga lesson. Learn how to play THA DHI THOM NAM on Mrudanga. In this tutorial, we have demonstrated how to play these syllables in a simple way. It is easy to understand and follow. We have explained how to play each of these 4 syllables individually and then how to play all of them together and also how to play different variations of these syllables.
These are the basic exercises recommended for beginners as well as for those who would wish to resume playing Mrudanga after a break.

With God's grace, he was the best and every year, he got 1st place in playing Mridhangam. He is 18 yrs now. He stopped playing and learning. I am very badly hurt. I got him good Mridhangam instrument also which is lying unused. Suddenly i got an idea to learn myself. When , I looked for teacher on line , I came across your channel. I am very greatful to you for teaching Mridhangam. May God bless you for sharing your knowledge for the people who are interested in learning Mridhangam and do not have any guide.

Sir what is the difference between Mrudhanga and Dholak....both are same?????
Namasthe, Dholak/Dhaol/Dholki they look similar to mrudangam.
Those three themselves are different because of the little difference in size & shape.
Mrudangam is much sophisticated(improved) instrument where in for each drum head( left and right) there are multiple layers of leather used.
Dhol/dholki /dholak etc uses Goat's skin drum head there as mrudangam drum heads are made of cattle(cow/bedfellow ) skin and the bars(strips) are made of ox's skin or so. Dhol will not have karana/karane' (black)/shyahi . Few Dolak might have them though.

Sure. You can. Only thing is the chaap & dhind etc will not have the jhEnkara(jhamp jhamp kind of sound).

I would recommend you to buy light weight synthetic mrudangam which will not have any maintenance / other issues.
